Roger Crews, Sr.

1789 – 1835

Roger CREWS was born about 1789 in St. Bartholomews Parrish, Colleton County, South Carolina.  Current research indicates he could be a son of Samuel (RS) and Sarah Crews, however recent DNA testing indicates he is still a brother to at least Alexander and Isham.

Roger married Elizabeth Mitchell born about 1794 in Colleton Co., SC (2). They were married by Rev. Bryan in Colleton County, on 27 Sep 1808 (1).

They had the following children (Roger and Lucinda were born in St. Bartholomews Parrish, Colleton County, South Carolina.  All remaining children were born in Camden County, Georgia):

Note1:  The children’s birth dates vary from census to census and were difficult to “pin down” as was the birth dates of Roger and Elizabeth.   The 1850 Census for Camden County, Georgia and Nassau County, Florida were utilized in determining birth dates as the majority of the children can be found during this Population Schedule.  The exceptions  are Keziah 1840 Camden as she passed away during 1844, Lucinda. Found in the 1860 census for Alachua County, FL, and James who cannot be located at all.   In fact, information on this entire family was hard to come by. The author took the information available and attempted to “fit the pieces together” to create this sketch.

"Mack," he died about 1907. Most members of this family are buried in

# Note2:  James name appears on the list of children, though his relationship to Roger and dates originate from unconfirmed source(s). The only record to date is a muster sheet from the Indian War that has William C. or James Crews.  William is too young for service in the Indian Wars

The earliest record located for Roger is the 1810 census for St. Bartholomews Parrish, Colleton County, South Carolina (below).

Detailed examination of this Population Schedule indicates Roger and his family live on,  or next to, property owned by Samuel Crews (RS).  His closest neighbors are Edward and Joseph Crews; Alexander is located 3 dwellings away from these four Crews families.

Edward, Roger, Joseph, and Alexander are close to one another ages with Samuel being at least a generation older. An attempt to establish these men’s relationships will be presented in a future sketch.

The Roger Crews family is next found in Camden County, Georgia.  Based on movements of other family members, this would have occurred during 1816 (reference profile of Stephen Crews).  The family is enumerated there during the 1820 Census for that locale.

There is one male, born 1805-1809, and there are three females within Roger and Elizabeth’s home that cannot be identified during the above census.  During the same census year Roger’s brother Alexander had three unidentified females, the same ages, enumerated in his household.  This may be coincidence, however, it may not.  Either way, we may never know the identities of these girls.

Roger’s dwelling in 1820 is between those of Alexander and Steven (Stephen) Crews.  Rodger (as his given name is sometimes spelled) is a resident of Capt. Bates District in Camden County and was a participant in the 1821 Georgia Land Lottery.  He drew land in Henry County.

He is listed on the 1830 Nassau County, Florida, census, and as a resident of East Florida on January 3, 1832, Rodger Crews endorsed a memorial for the reappointment of Judge Smith

Roger met his demise during the 2nd Florida War, in 1835.  A story told by one of his descendant’s state, “…he was shot off his horse and his dog would not allow anyone to approach the body for a while”.  The same descendant states Roger is buried in Pigeon Creek Cemetery, Hilliard, Nassau County, Florida.  Elizabeth filed for Widow’s Pension; the file is #2500.

His widow, moved back into Camden County, Georgia soon after Roger’s untimely death.

On January 5, 1836 the Court of Inferior, Camden County, GA ordered the County Treasurer pay Mrs. Elizabeth Crews fifteen dollars for support of Roger’s orphans.  The same judgment was so ordered again Jan. 8, 1939 (18)

Elizabeth is enumerated within the 1840 in Camden as a widow (19) ( 21).

Note3:  The age ranges of the children in the 1830 and 1840 census do not exactly match the birth dates found in the summary of children starting with paragraph four however, the quantity of children and approximate ages

appear to be close.

Elizabeth appears once more in Camden County, Georgia (20).  She was enumerated in the 1850 Population Schedule in 1850 Camden County with children Sarah and Cornelius.   She resides in the same general area as her other children and their families:  Archie and Honor, Elbert and Courtney, Jesse and Sophia, William and Rachel, Joseph, Calvin, and Albert.

Elizabeth likely passed away during the 1850s as no additional information can be found.
