LIGHTSEY, Jacob
1810-1892
CLINCH
JACOB LIGHTSEY was born in Colleton District, South Carolina, June 17, 1810, and came to Wiregrass Georgia with his brother, Samuel, in 1836. After living in Lowndes County a short while, Jacob Lightsey decided to move over into the adjoining county of Ware. Here he granted lands from the State, Lots 509 and 581, 12th district, and made his home on these lands. He was married in Barnwell District, South Carolina, January 7, 1830, to Miss Christina Rice, born October 25, 1807, died September 24, 1890, daughter of John and Ann (Guest) Rice. To them were born:
1. Cornelius B.b. December 30, 1831, m. Sarah Carter, daughter of John.
2. Rebeccab. February, 1833, never married; died young girlhood.
3. Susannah (Ann)b. January 14, 1834, m. (1) William J. Knight. son of William C., killed in C.S.A. (2) David S. Copland.
4. Mary E.b. February 7, 1836, m. Mitchell S. Griffin of Cat Creek.
5. John J.b. April 1837, m. in Florida. Moved there.
6. Stephen J.b. June 13, 1838, m. Elizabeth Lott, daughter of Dr. Daniel.
7. Rachelb. October 24, 1840, m. (1) Lewis Sirmans, son of David J. (2) John A. Whittington, no issue.
8. Jacob S.b. September 26, 1842, m. Henrietta E. Nugent April 4, 1884.
9. George W.b. 1844 never m., died in Federal prison at Camp Chase, Ohio.
Jacob Lightsey was in the Indian War and served in Capt. David R. Bryan's company of Lowndes County militia in 1838, prior to his removal to Ware County. In 1850, in the creation of Clinch out of Ware County he was cut off into Clinch. He served as a Justice of the Inferior Court of Clinch County 1855-1857 and again 1861-1862. When the railroad was built through from Savannah to Thomasville, his plantation was not far from the new station, No. 12, or "Suwannoochee" as it was first called (since 1872, named DuPont). Judge Lightsey bought some lands in the new town north of the railroad and built the town's first hotel which he and his wife operated for many years. Judge Lightsey died there April 27, 1892. He and his wife were buried at the North Cemetery two miles north of DuPont.
Judge Lightsey and wife were charter members of Prospect Primitive Baptist Church January 22, 1859. He was ordained a deacon of the church June 4, 1859, and served as church clerk 1859-1865. Mrs. Lightsey died a member and later Judge Lightsey was dismissed by letter September 21, 1891, to become a member of Olive Leaf Church.
Of the children, Stephen J. and Cornelius B. Lightsey and John J. Lightsey moved to South Florida where they reared their families and lived until their deaths.
