Civil War Pvt. Co. E 26 GA Regt. CSA 4/18/61.

WALDRON, Elias D., Jr. - Private April 18, 1861. Killed at Monocacy, Md. July 9, 1864.

This regiment was formed in March, 1862, in Savannah, Georgia. It served with the Army of Northern Virginia for July, 1862 until it's surrender at Appomattox Court House, except during Longstreet's 1863 expedition to Georgia and Tennessee. Upon reaching Virginia, it was assigned to Drayton's Brigade. During the Battle of Antietam, the regiment was assigned to Toomb's Brigade. After the battle, the 50th Regiment was permanently assigned to Paul Jones Semmes's Brigade.

The 26th Georgia Regiment was under the command of General Robert E. Lee during the War of Southern Independence. South Georgia boys were fighting the battles of Northern Virginia while Sherman was marching through Georgia.

Researchers are reminded that the 26th Georgia Regiment was heavily involved in battle skirmishes throughout their 3 ½ year campaign in Northern Virginia. No other Civil War campaign lasted as long. Surviving the natural elements of Virginia, as well as fierce battles against federal troops was their number one priority. Pen and paper maintenance of Company records took a distant, less priority to loading-ramming and shooting of weapons. Numerous records and accounts were destroyed through the natural evolution of events. Information assembled by Thomas Earl Cleland for the edification of Brantley County descendants and genealogists

Thomas DE VANE Sr. Born in France. Died Before 1774. The old De Vane plantation was originally a land grant from the King of England in 1735 [so say the family stories, anyway] and is located between Kerr and Tomahawk, NC, in present-day Sampson County. [NOTE: Some of this land is still in the De Vane family; in 1997, some 1000 acres are owned by Graham, Bobby, and James De Vane and the widow of their brother, Loftin De Vane] In petitions for patents of land, Thomas De Vane is mentioned as having petitions for: 400 acres in New Hanover County, 20 Feb 1735/36, plus the following: 300 acres in NH Co., 1736, NC Colonial Records, Vol 4, pp 217-18. 320 acres in NH Co., 18 Nov 1743, NC Colonial Records, Vol 4, p. 650. 200 acres in NH Co., 17 Nov 1743, NC Colonial Records, Vol 4, p. 649. 300 acres in NH Co., 28 Sep 1751, NC Colonial Records, Vol 4, p. 1248. 320 acres in NH Co., 14 Mar 1745/46, NC Colonial Records, Vol 4, p. 801. There is a plaque at the Black River Presbyterian Church in Ivanhoe, NC, showing Thomas De Vane to have been one of the elected elders in 1788 [NOTE: must be Thomas II]. Also on a marker in the graveyard is a stone to commemorate that Thomas De New Hanover Co., NC Deeds C, 83 will of James Pollard, mariner wife Ann (extx) 18 Nov 1740 codicil of Long Creek, 21 Nov 1740 At death of wife all property of which she may be possessed to Thomas Devaun and Margaret his wife. In my research I found a letter written in 1915, by a Thomas Wyatt DeVane of Bladen Co., NC, written to an uncle of mine, who in 1915, was seeking DeVane history, 'This is his story. The first Thomas DeVane and his wife, the Princess Margaret Conde along with his brother James, landed in NC....' Was a French Huguenot who came to this country in 1721, having fled France to England, Scotland, and Barbados before landing in Wilmington (now). Was probably related to Martha DiVigean, b. 1621, the great love of the then Prince de Conde. (Note: name would be pronounced 'duh vawn', and the name first seen in America was spelled 'DeVaun'.) General Notes: Wife - Margaret

Birth: unknown
Death: 1786
New Hanover County
North Carolina, USA

This is a photograph of a painting that has been in the Devane family for many years. It is, supposedly, of Margaret, wife of the first Thomas Devane( -1773) of New Hanover Co., NC. Her hair in the original portrait is reddish blonde. In 1967, this portrait was in Fayetteville, NC in a private home of a Devane descendant.
Margaret's maiden name has not been verified by any legal documents. The family tradition is that she was Conti, Conte or de Conde.
Thomas and Margaret Devane's history is on file at the Charleston, SC and the NC Huguenot Society. Several members of the Devane family have been accepted into both the Charleston, SC and NC Huguenot Societies based by right of descent from Thomas DeVane, a Huguenot. The Registrar's records of these societies should have the proof of Thomas being a Huguenot.

Margaret died after 1786. We know from Thomas Devane's Will that was written on May 20, 1765 (New Hanover Court Rec. Will Bk. C pg. 67 - 68 and on file at NC Archives) and probated in July Court 1774 that she and Thomas had 4 children:

Thomas Devane, Jr. (1725-1816) married Mary Larkins. He was in the Revolutionary War.
John Devane, Sr.(1730-1805) married Ann Larkins. He was in the Revolutionary War.
Mary Devane( - )married Thomas Corbett who was in Revolutionary War.
Margaret Devane( - ) married James Portivent and William Jones.
Note: Thomas Devane, Jr.(1725-1816) had a daughter named Margaret Devane(1758-1826). She married William King. They had 8 children, one of which was William Rufus Devane King(1786-1853) who was elected Vice-President of the United States under Franklin Pierce in 1852. He died shortly after being sworned into office. He had been Minister to France and member of the Senate. He moved from Sampson Co., NC to Alabama. In the State Museum is a large collection of Devane artifacts. This portrait came through Margaret's (1758-1826) family. His FAG# 2788.

If the Bath Co., NC deed abstract shown on this page is the Thomas & Margaret Devane posted here, then Margaret's maiden name was not Conti, but Sullivan. She was a daughter of Darby Sullivan.
