Notes
General:
CRUMMEY, STEPHEN
1760-1820
BARNWELL CO., South Carolina
Stephen Crummey, a Revolutionary soldier of South Carolina, lived and died in Barnwell District(?), South Carolina. He was born in 1760 and died about 1820. He married Rebecca Carter, an aunt of Capt. Jesse Carter (see Vol. 1) and a sister of his father, George Carter and others of that large family. To Stephen and Rebecca Crummey were born five sons and five daughters but the names of only four are known so far to the Compiler:
1. Nancyb. 1789, m. Silas O'Quinn.
2. Jesseb. 1802, m. Rachel Branch
3. Dicyb. 1804, never married.
4. Rebeccab. 1809, m. John B. Carter.
Stephen was enumerated in the 1790 census in the Charleston District, St Bartholomews Parrish. The census indicates he was the only male in the home with 3 daughters and his wife. The family is living amongst several Carter families including Elijah, father George, and John
These four children all moved to Appling County, Georgia, and their widowed mother also moved there but whether at the same time or later cannot now be defintely said. She drew land as the widow of a Revolutionary soldier in the 1838 Cherokee Land Lottery, being at the time a resident of Appling County. She died about 1840.
Stephen Crummey served in the South Carolina militia in the Revolutionary War (see Book L-N, page 271, South Carolina Stub Entries to Indents, by Salley) and was at thr fall of Charleston. He was still in the militia during 1782 (Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby Gilmer Moss pg 222)
