Notes
General:
. John Carter (Thos. 3 , Edward 2 , Thos. 1 ) owned a good
plantation of about four hundred acres near Corotoman River,
in Christ Church parish. In my incomplete genealogy of the
Carters, published in the William and Mary Quarterly, I
gave this John Carter as the son of Daniel (died 1759) and
grandson of Captain Thomas, Jr., but the Carter Mss., 1858,
shows that I was mistaken and he was a son of Edward Carter.
The Carter Mss. says of him: "John was married twice. First
to a Miss Spencer, daughter of Edward Spencer, of Richmond
county, and lastly to a widow Pollard, who bore him no children.
By the first wife he had Spencer, Thomas and Lucy, who married
Tapscott Oliver, of Northumberland county, and has grand-
children living there now. Tom went to Culpeper and married
a Miss Gaines and had a big family. Spencer I remember very
well. He married a Miss Hayney and had sons, Spencer, John,
Rawley and Hayney, about my age, and daughters, Lucy and
Winny. I was at the infair at his second wedding when he mar-
ried the widow of George Conway."

Notes
General:
John Carter who usually signed his name John Carter, Sr., to distinguish himself from his first cousin John Carter, was born in Colleton District, S. C., in 1794, a son of Elijah Carter. He was married there about 1825 and his wife was named Lavina, sometimes called "Vincy", born 1799 in South Carolina, but her maiden name is unknown. John and Lavinia had 8 children.

Mr. Carter removed from his old home in South Carolina, near Little Salkehatchie River to Lowndes County, Georgia about 1830. His home was cut out of Lowndes into Echols County in 1858, and, he died there about 1880. His wife died soon after. They were buried in the Sardis Baptist Church (Carter) Cemetery not far from their home; graves unmarked.

Mr. Carter was a First Lieutenant in the militia in the 661st district of Lowndes County, 1832-33 and served as an ensign in the same company, 1835-39. He served an enlistment as a private under Capt. Samuel E. Swilley in the 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, June 16th to Dec. 16th, 1837, in the Indian War.

John Carter, Sr., was baptized into the membership of Union Primitive Baptist Church; August 9, 1840; and the next year, on June 9, 1841, was dismissed by letter with others, to join in the constituting of Antioch Church which was nearer his home. He became a charter member of Antioch and continued a member there for some years, as did his wife.

1850 Census Lowndes County, GA has John Sr. as 56 occupation farmer, wife Lavina age 51 both born in SC.
Mary 22, George 20 both born in SC, Martin 18, Sarah 16, Barney 14, Eliza 10, John 8, and Allen 3 all born in Ga.

Notes
General:
CARTER, JOHN
1809-1864

John Carter, a son of Capt. Jesse Carter (see Vol. 1), was born in South Carolina in 1809, and grew up in Tattnall and Appling Counties in Georgia. There being a cousin of the same name in Lowndes County fifteen years older, the subject usually signed his name "John Carter, Jr." and by many of his day and since, he has been referred to as "Bay John Carter" inasmuch as he lived near Grand Bay in Lowndes County.
Mr. Carter married Elizabeth Knight, born September 23, 1811, in Wayne County, daughter of Rev. William A. Knight and his wife, Keziah (Vol. 1). To them were born fourteen children:

1. Keziahb. 1831, m. John D. Zeigler.
2. Jesseb. 1834, m. Susan Lightsey, daughter of Samuel (see Vol 1).
3. Sarahb. 1835, m. Cornelius B. Lighisey, son of Jacob (see Vol. 1).
4. John C.b. 1837, m. Nancy Robinson, daughter of William (son of Frederick (see Vol. 1).
5. Matthew M.b. 1839, m. Elizabeth Wheatley, September 14, 1871.
6. Aaronb. 1840, m. Polly Ann Carter, daughter of George (1st cousin).
7. Mosesb. 1842, m. Marintha Carter, daughter of John L. (cousin).
8. Elizabethb. 1844, m. Newton Blanton.
9. Rachelb. 1846, m. John A. Copeland.
10. Amandab. 1848, died young.
11. Mary Annb. 1849, m. J. B. Simmons.
12. Sylvanus J.b. 1852, m. (l) Mary Elizabeth Howell, February 18, 1875 (2) Ellen Seckinger (3) Leanna Stevens.
13. Marthab. 1851, m. Richard Touchton, moved to Florida.
14. Clarab. 1856, m. John George.

Mr. Carter and wife united with Union Primitive Baptist Church in 1840 and were baptized. Upon the organization of Unity Church nearer their home, they transferred their membership there and were members there until their deaths.
Mr. Carter was a Justice of Lowndes Inferior Court 1853-1857. He also fought in the Indian War of 1836-1838. He died in 1864, and his sons, M. M. Carter and Aaron Carter administered his estate. He owned lots 335, 336 and 356 in the 11th district of Lowndes County, and lived on one of these lots. 406 acres of this land was set apart as a dowry to the widow and the administrators were given leave September 1874, to sell the remainder of the property, which was done. The widow died about 1890.

Notes
General:
John Carter, third son of Captain Thomas and Katharine
Dale Carter, "was born*^ ye 8'^ May 1674 and bap'^ Sunday ye
14th and had for God parents Coll. John Carter, ^1' Jno : Stretch-
ley and :M" Ball."\emdash Prayer Book.

The Colonel John Carter mentioned as a godfather must have
been Col. John Carter, Jr., of "Corotoman," as Col. John Carter,
Sr., died in 1669.

June 24, 1703, John Carter and his brothers, Thomas and
Henry, gave bond of five hundred pounds sterling to their brother.
Edward, guaranteeing his possession of a hundred acres of land
left by their father, "Thomas Carter late of this county Gent
dec'd." This is the last appearance of John Carter in the records
of Lancaster, and until I had access to the Carter MSS. of 185S
I was at a loss as to where he settled after leaving Lancaster.
This speaks of him and his descendants as follows :

'T have never known but one member of this branch of the
Carter family and that was a Mr. Norborn Sutton, a lawyer
living in Caroline. A few years ago he spent several days in
Lancaster, taking depositions in a suit I saw him at the court-
house, and on hearing my name he said his grandfather was
a Carter. He spent Sunday with me and I found him a pleasant.
well informed man. He knew a lot about his people and told
me that his grandfather's father was a John Carter, who settled
in Caroline from Lancaster before the county was formed. He
did not know the name of John's father, but I believe it must
have been our old ancestor. Tom, who had a son, John. He
said that this John was married three times ; first to a ^liss Ball.
who was a sister or cousin of General Washington's mother. She
died without leaving any children. He then married a ^liss
Pavne and had several daughter^ none of which m.arried, and

after she died he married a ]\\Iis3 Todd of King- and Queen
county and settled in that county. She was an heiress and brought
him a nice dot in land and slaves. They had sons, Thomas. John,
Mr. Sutton's grandfather, WilHam, who has descendants now in
Carohne, Robert, of King and Queen, and James, v.-ho left no cliil-
dren ; and a daughter, ^Margaret, who never married. John, the
oldest son, was married twice, first to a IMiss Betsy Armstead, of
Richmond county, and last to a Miss tiannah Chew, of Spottsyl-
vania. The first wife had sons, William, married Curtis; John,
married Sinjon, and daughters, Fanny, married Curtis ; Martha,
married Goodlo ; xA.nn. married Heslop : Peggy, married Mar-
shall ; Betsy, married Thomas, and Sally, married Sutton, and was
the mother of Mr. N. S. The last wife had son, Robert, never
married, and daughters, Mary, married Stevens ; ^^largaret Chew.
married Taliaferro ; Judy, married Sutton. Lucy, married Talia-
fero, and Tilly, never married. He was a captain in tb.e War
of Independence and was a man of great means and fine style
of living. His children all had big families, who are scattered
everywhere. John Carter, first of Caroline, lived to be very
old."

The old Prayer Book has the record of John Carter's first and
last marriage, but gives nothing of the second.

"John Carter & Frances Ball was Mar'd on Tuesday the 21st
Day Xov^'r 1698." She was a daughter of Joseph Ball, of 'Epping
Forest,' and his first wife. Elizabeth Romney, as shown by the
notice of her death in the Carter records. She was born in 1681
and was, therefore, Jos. Ball's eldest daughter. As her only
child died in 1700 it is easily seen why she does not appear in
the partition deed made in 1707 by Colonel Ball to his daugh-
ters, and likewise in his will in 171 1.

"Frances the loving & dear wife of John Carter and Dau.
of M^ Joseph Ball and Elizabeth his Wife Departed this life at
5 min*^ to 8 a clock in the ]Morning of y^ 3'^ day of Sep"" 1699
three hours after she was Deliv** of a Son in the i8th Year of
her life. And was buried on the 5^ day at S' Marys White
Chappell attended by an Aftectionate and Sorrowing Husband
and a large Concorde of Relatives and friends."

272 GENEALOGY OF THE CARTER FAMILY

"Joseph Ball Carter followed his mother to the Grave on the
1st day of July 1700 of a Flux and was buried at S' Marys on
ye 2"^.'"

Colonel Joseph Ball, as is well known, was the father of ^lary
Ball Washington, the mother of General George Washington.
As his daughter Frances Carter left no surviving issue no notes
of the Ball family will be given here; but will appear at other
places in this book, as there were five intermarriages between the
descendants of the emigrant?, Captain William Ball. Sr., and
Captain Thomas Carter, Sr.

Nothing is known of the second wife and children of John
Carter more than is given above. The date of the third mar-
riage is as follows :

"John Carter was married to Margaret, the Dau*" of ^1" W""
todd dec'd on the 4th day of June 17 14 by R' M' J. Shafe at
10 o'clock in the morn^."

Notes
General:
John 4 Carter (Joseph, 3 Thomas, 2 Thomas 1 ), born June 8, 1725, died after 1793 in Orange county. January 4,
1771, John Carter had a deed from his mother, Catharine Carter, for her dower in 215 acres of land where his father,
Joseph Carter, dec'd, had lived. April 24, 1780, Joseph Rogers, of Culpeper, sold to John Carter, Gent., of Spotsylvania, 188 acres and improvements in Orange county, to which he removed his family, as in the census of 1782, John Carter, of Orange, was the head of a family of sixteen whites and thirty servants. February 25, 1785, Robert Thomas sold to John Carter, of Orange, 455 acres, buildings and other improvements for £230. March 25, 1785, John Carter and wife Susannah, of Orange, sold to William Coats, of Spotsylvania, 165 acres in Spotsylvania, a part of a tract purchased by the said John Carter's father, Joseph Carter, from Robert Goodloe and April
1st they sold an adjoining 60 acres to Meredith Anderson. Both these deeds are witnessed by Beverly and William Winslow, who are said to have been cousins of the Carters. April 3, 1787, John Carter, of Orange, released to his son-in-law, David Lively, of Spotsylvania, his title to a negro servant. June 20, same year, John and Susannah sold 13 acres of their plantation to Joseph Bell. This is the last appearance of Susannah Carter's signature to her husband's deeds. February 21, 1791, he purchased 41 acres adjoining his land from Richard Moore Thomas, of Woodford county, Ky., but then in Orange county, witnessed by Joseph and Priscilla Carter and January 28, 1793, he sold the place where he then lived \emdash 276 acres at a pound per acre to Roger and Henry Bell. Also on same date 104 acres to Adam Quisenberry; and April 22, 1793, appears for the last time in the records when he purchased a 200 acre plantation from Joseph May and wife Jane. John and Susannah Carter evidently had a large family as shown by the census, unless they had grandchildren living with them, but I have the names of but three of their children :

216. John, Jr., born September 21, 1757, died in Spotsylvania, June 20, 1808.

217. Joseph, living in Orange in 1815, and 1817, when he and wife, Polly, made deeds for land had from his father,
John Carter.

218. Priscilla, unmarried in 1791.

219. , a daughter who married David Lively, of Spotsylvania.

John Carter, Sr., and John Carter, Jr., both served as privates in the Virginia troops in the Revolution.

Smith, in Waycross. He was married Nov. 7, 1855, to Mehala, daughter of James and Mary R. Walker (Vol. I). She was born In Lowndes County, Nov. 30, 1837, and died Jan. 13, 1913, at her home near Statenville. Four children were born to this marriage:

1. Columbus J.b. Nov.14, 1856, m. Martha Elizabeth Watson, 1885.
2. Lafayette A.b. Nov.28, 1858, m. Mary J. Smith, dau. of John F., of Hamilton Co.
3. Elizabeth b. Nov.30, 1860, m. Job E.W. Smith, Mar. 13, 1883. Lived at Lake Park.

Note: The said Mary J. Smith, wife of Dr. L.A. Carter, and the first-named J.E.W. Smith were brother and sister, and were 1st cousins to said Dr. J.E.W. Smith, all being grandchildren of Elder Job E. W. Smith (q.v.).

John A. Carter enlisted in the Confederate Army in November, 1861, as a private in Co. "11", 26th Volunteer Georgia Regiment. He was wounded in the knee July 1, 1863, in the battle of Gettysburg, and was captured and spent eight months in Federal prison on Devils Island, N. Y.
