DARSEY, JOHN.John Darsey, one of the first settlers of Decatur County, was born 1786 in Burke County, a son of Joel Darsey, R.S., and his wife, Elizabeth, and grandson of Joseph Darsey (Darcy). The latter settled in St. George Parish (later made into Burke County) in 1766, moving from North Carolina; and in the Revolutionary war he and all his sons were Whigs as they were called, espousing the cause of liberty, and he was captured and imprisoned in a British prison ship stationed at Charleston, S.C., and died in prison, Joel Darsey, father of the subject, became a Revolutionary soldier while only fourteen years old, and served about three years in Georgia and South Carolina, all as detailed in his Revolutionary War pension application on file in Washington.
1786-1864
DECATUR
In 1824, Joel Darsey, R.S., and John Darsey, his son, and his family, moved to Decatur County and settled in the 22nd land district near or on the Florida line. Joel moved from Jefferson county and John, the subject, moved from Burke.
John Darsey was married in Tattnall county, Oct, 2, 1816, to Jane English, daughter of Joseph and Amy English of that county but formerly of Burke County. She was born Sept. 17, 1797 in Burke County. Born to them were three children:
1. James Andersb. 1820, m. Nancy Carter, dau of Jesse (Vol. l)
2. Janeb. 1830, m. Dr. John Hendley of Gadsden Co., Fla.
3. Joseph Huttob. 1837, m. Julia F. Shelfer, July 25, 1865.
Though married in Tattnall, it does not appear John Darsey ever lived there. The 1824 tax-digest of Decatur, shows him owning lot of land 42, 22nd district Decatur County (home-place), and 498 acres in Burke County. The last years of Mr. and Mrs. Darsey were spent across the line in Gadsden County, Fla., near or with their daughter, Mrs. Hendley. Mr. Darsey died in 1864 and was buried in the Darsey Cemetery in southwest Decatur county.
Mrs. Bess Darsey Stanley of Savannah, a grand-daughter of Joseph H. Darsey named above, was the first descendant of Joel Darsey, R.S., to become a member of the D.A.R. on the record of his- service in the Revolution. Her D.A.R. National Number is 390110. Mrs. Ruby Darsey (W.H.) Howell of Lakeland, Ga., a granddaughter of James A. Darsey, is a member of the John Floyd Chapter, D.A.R., through descent from Joel Darsey, R.S. Her supplemental application on this line was approved May 8, 1959. Her national number is 395210.

DAUGHARTY, DEMPSEYDempsey Daugharty, an early settler of Wiregrass Georgia, was born in South Carolina in 1777, a son of John Daugharty, R.S. The latter served as a private in the Cherokee War in South Carolina in 1759-1760 under Col. Richard Richardson from old Camden District of Craven County, and afterwards was a private in the South Carolina militia in 1781 in the Revolutionary War. John Daugharty, R.S., moved with his family to Bulloch County, Georgia, 1800 or before. Dempsey Daugharty's wife was Mary (called "Pollie") Pearce. Nothing is now known of her parents, place of birth, etc. They had two known sons:
1777-1850
CLINCH
1. Jamesb. 1795, m. Nancy Bassett. (See Vol. 1).
2. Williamb. 1814, m. Alief Roberts in Florida
The Census both of 1820 and 1830 indicates Dempsey and Pollie Daugharty had one more son but his name has not been learned.
Dempsey Daugharty was commissioned Captain of the militia in the 58th district, Bulloch County, June 27, 1804, and again December 13th, 1809. This district was in 1812 cut into Emanuel County. In 1810 he moved to Pulaski County and lived there a short while; he was commissioned Justice of Peace in that county, January 11, 1811. By 1814 he was in Tattnall County whither his parents, John and Nancy, had moved. In 1819 he moved across the Altamaha River and settled in the new County of Appling, and in 1825 was cut out of Appling into Ware County. He served as Justice of Peace in the 719th district, Ware (now Clinch and Echols Counties), 1828-1830. The Daugharty home place was on Suwannoochee Creek in present Clinch county.
Dempsey Daugharty and wife moved to Florida about 1840 and their last years were spent in Hamilton and Columbia Counties.

DAUGHARTY, JamesJAMES DAUGHARTY was born in this state, in Effingham or Screven county, in 1795, son of Dempsey Daugharty. It appears that he grew to manhood in Bulloch county and the family was cut into Emanuel County in 1812. He was married twice. The first wife was Nancy Bassett, born 1803 in Effingham or Bulloch county, Georgia. She had a brother, William Bassett, who moved to Jasper, Florida, and died there. The following children were born by the first wife:
1795-1878
CLINCH
1. Johnb. 1827, Georgia, m. Margaret Elvington.
2. Elizabethb. 1828, Georgia, m. Gideon Burnsed. Died 1902.
3. Francisb. 1830, Florida, m. Emily Roberts, daughter of George
4. Jamesb. 1833, Florida, never married; died in C. S. Army,
5. Williamb. 1836, Georgia, m. Charlotte Driggers, daughter of Jonas
6. Nancyb. 1837, Georgia, m. Ichabod Foreacres.
7. Penelopeb. 1838, Georgia, m. Levin Tomlinson.
8. Marthab. 1843, Georgia, m. (l) Samuel Tumblin (2) James Burnett, son of John.
The second marriage was to Miss Sarah J. Pease, born 1818, in Georgia. It is likely this marriage took place in Florida. There was a daughter, Sarah Jane, born 1848 in Georgia, born by this marriage; she apparently died young.
James Daugharty took his bride soon after his first marriage, in Emanuel County, and emigrated to the new county of Appling about 1825; four years later they moved to Hamilton County, Florida. Within a few years they had moved back to Georgia and located in Ware (now Clinch) County. There he bought Lot of Land No. 438, 12th district, on Suwannoochee Creek, and cleared up a farm and lived there until his first wife died, sometime about 1845; she was buried there. He then sold out and moved to Columbia County, Florida, where he married the second wife and lived for some years. His last years were spent in Baker County, Florida, near Sanderson.
