BURNETT, JAMES
1850-1935
ECHOLS

James Burnett, youngest child of John and Sophia Burnett (see Vol. 1), was born in the 719th district of Ware County, February 4, 1849. A year later, on February 14, 1850, Clinch County was formed mostly out of Ware and included the Burnett home. Eight years after, in 1858, the family again changed the county of their residence without having to move, when Echols County was made mostly out of Clinch county.

Mr. Burnett grew up in Echols County in the 719th district, and was married there in December 1870, to Mrs. Martha Tumblin, widow of Samuel Tumblin and daughter of James and Nancy Daugharty (see Vol. 1). She was born in Ware, now Clinch County, May 19, 1842, and died at her home at Howell in Echols County, December 12, 1920. To Mr. and Mrs. Burnett were born the following children:

1. John Jacksonb. January 4, 1872, m. Minnie K. Dukes June 3, ^190&^
2. Francis (Frank)b. April 26, 1873, m. Nancy M. Sistrunk February 7, 1907.
3. Elizabethb. March 23, 1875, m. Dr. J. Frank Hall October 15,1904.
4. Sallieb. June 11, 1877, m. H. J. (Mann) Carter 1896.
5. Isabelleb. October 2, 1878, m. Benjamin Leviton 1898.
6. Oliveb. December 31, 1879, m. John Ivy Carter April 4, 1904.
7. Jamesb. June 8, 1884, m. Mabel Cunningham March 2, 1912.
8. Bryantb. May 26, 1886, m. Lona B. Lewis, October 14, 1914.
9. Olab. May 11, 1888, m. LeRoy Pennington May 1910.

In 1921, Mr. Burnett married for his second wife, Miss Emily Zeigler, born December 18, 1859; she died October 22, 1931. There was no issue of this marriage. She was a daughter of John D. Zeigler of Lowndes County.

Soon after marriage, Mr. Burnett acquired land in Echols County, and began farming and stock raising. For many years, he drove his beef cattle annually to Jacksonville, Florida, where he always found a ready sale. In 1915 Mr. Burnett sold his farm and timber land to his son-in-law and daughter, Dr. J. F. Hall and wife, and bought a home in the village of Howell. They lived there the remainder of their lives.

Mrs. Martha Burnett united with Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Echols County, and was baptized July 14, 1883. Her husband was received in like manner about 1908. After moving to Howell, Mr. and Mrs. Burnett united with Wayfare Church, which was much nearer to them, and they were members there at their respective deaths.

Mr. Burnett died November 5, 1935, at the age of 86 years. He and both of his wives are buried at Wayfare Church. He lived a very exemplary life as a church member and a citizen.

JOHN BURNETT was an early settler of present Echols County and was born in South Carolina near Walterboro in 1796, son of Richard Burnett and grandson of Richard Burnett, R. The Burnett home was on Saltketcher Creek.

John Burnett married Sophia Harvey, born 1806 in Colleton District, South Carolina She and her sister, Nancy, were orphan girls reared by their uncle "Moll" Harvey in Colleton District; Nancy married Thomas Bivins there. To John and Sophia were born:

This territory was cut into Clinch County in 1850 and into Echols in 1858. Mr. Burnett died in 1867 of heart disease; his wife died in 1871. They were buried at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in eastern Echols; graves are unmarked.
