Notes
General:
John the elder, a musician, was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, where he was a chorister and there embraced Protestantism to the annoyance of his father, who promptly disinherited him. John Milton, on leaving Oxford, went to London "to seek a manner of his fortune." After trying various means of gaining a livlihood, he adopted, in 1595, the profession of scrivener and on the 27th day of February, 1599-1600, was admitted to the company of scriveners. About 1600, he started business for himself in Broadstreet, Cheapside, at the sign of the spread eagle and at about the same time married Sarah, daughter of Paul Jeffrey, merchant taylor of St. Swithens, London. John died in March of 1647, wife Sarah died earlier on April 1637. John was buried March 15, 1647 in St Giles Cripelgate.

Note John Milton is the father of the John (the Poet) Milton, author of "Paradise Lost" and many other works.

Captain John Milton

Captain John Milton was born 1740 in Halifax County NC to John Milton and Mary Farr. The "famous" Captain was an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, Planter, first Secretary of State of Georgia, and charter member of the Society of the Cincinnati. He married Hannah Elizabeth Spencer (1761-1836) daughter of Thomas Spencer and Mary E. Butler.

His biography can be found in any American Encyclopedia of Biography. He was a planter and took an active part in the affairs of his day. Sometime before the outbreak of the American Revolution he moved to Burke County, Georgia Colony. When the colonies declared their independence, he was chosen as the first secretary of the state of Georgia, to which he was elected twice again after the revolution was over. He saved the Georgia State Papers from the hands of the British by slipping through the lines to New Berne, NC (his old home) and thence to Baltimore, where the papers remained until the end of the war. He fought with distinction through the Revolution, was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel and the Georgia records refer to him by that title although he was always known as Captain John Milton in family records. He served with the "Swamp Fox" General Marion. He was once the British and spent nine months in the Castillo De San Marcos in Saint Augustine, Florida, as a prisoner of war. One of the important engagements in which he took part was the Battle of Kings Mountain.
It is a matter of record in Georgia History that Capt. John Milton received the two Georgia electoral votes against General George Washington for President. John actually wanted to be Vice -President. One of Georgia's counties, Milton, was named for him but the merging of counties from time to time, it became a part of Fulton County, (Atlanta).

John Milton married Hannah Elizabeth Spencer, whose grandmother was a princess of the French House of DeLoche. Her sister, Deborah, married two distinguished Georgians, Governor John Martin and Horatio Marbury.

Captain John Milton's home was known as Padanarum, on Butler Creek in Richmond County, a plantation in Georgia where he died. He served as Mayor of Augusta and there are many records of deeds, land grants, gifts of slaves and his cattle brand (Jm) in the court house there. He received Revolutionary War Bounty Grant in 1784 of 920 acres in Washington County on Rea's Creek, near Augusta. Captain Milton was wealthy, wise, and well educated. He frequently quoted the classics and gave his children classical names. John and Hannah had eight known children.

Hannah passed away in 1836 with no will.

Notes
General:
John Milton (April 20, 1807 \endash April 1, 1865) was an American politician who was the fifth Governor of Florida. Milton was the son of Homer Virgil Milton (1781\endash 1822) and the grandson of Revolutionary War hero and former Georgia Secretary of State, John Milton (1756\endash 1804).

John was born near Louisville, Georgia. He married Susan Cobb in Georgia about 1830, and they had 4 children. John and Susan lived in Georgia and later in Alabama. Susan Cobb Milton died in 1842; John later got re-married to a Caroline Howze from Alabama in 1844, and they had 10 children. John and Caroline lived in Alabama, in New Orleans, and eventually settled in northern Florida, in Marianna. One of his sons was Old West lawman Jeff Milton. One of John's grandsons, William Hall Milton (1864\endash 1942), served as a United States Senator from Florida (1908\endash 1909).

During his career, John became a lawyer, practicing in a number of communities in Georgia and Alabama, before settling in New Orleans. He came to Florida in 1846, and quickly entered the Florida political scene. In 1848, he served as a presidential elector for the state, then in 1850 was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. As a strong supporter of states' rights, he was an early advocate for secession of Florida from the Union. He was a delegate to the 1860 Democratic National Convention from Florida and in the same year ran for the office of governor. A convention was called for to take up the issue of secession and on January 10, 1861, the measure passed. He took the oath of office on October 7, 1861. During the Civil War, Milton stressed the importance of Florida as a supplier of goods, rather than men, with Florida being a large provider of food and salt for the Confederate Army. As the war drew to a close and the Confederacy was close to defeat, he became worn down by the stress of his office. Governor Milton left Tallahassee for his plantation, "Sylvania," in Marianna, Florida. In his final message to the state legislature, he said that Yankees "have developed a character so odious that death would be preferable to reunion with them." Stating "death would be preferable to reunion," on April 1, 1865, he committed suicide, in his home, by a gunshot to the head.[1] The president of the Florida Senate, Abraham K. Allison, was sworn in as governor of Florida later that day.

He is buried at Saint Luke's Episcopal Cemetery in Marianna.
