AVERA, STEPHEN WILLISStephen Willis Avera, a son of Daniel and Tobitha Avera (see Vol. 1), was born in Wilkinson County, January 5, 1836, and moved with his parents to present Berrien County in 1845. He was married in Clinch county in 1854 to Miss Martha Elizabeth Akins, born 1837, daughter of William G. Akins (see Vol. 1). To them were born:

Following his marriage Mr. Avera lived in the northwest part of Clinch County in the portion that was in 1920 cut into Lanier County. He lived there two years following his marriage, then moved back to Berrien County which had just been made out of Lowndes County. He farmed there until 1887 when he sold out and moved to Colquitt County and bought a farm near Pleasant Grove Church, and lived there until his death in 1912. He was buried at Pleasant Grove Church.
Mr. Avera served three years in Company "E", 54th Georgia Regiment, C. S. A., having enlisted May 6, 1862. He was 5th Sargent in his company.

AVERA, WILLIAM M.William M. Avera, a son of Daniel Avera (Vol. 1), was born in Wilkinson County, July 3, 1834, and came with his parents in his childhood to Irwin, now Berrien, County, where he grew up and married. His wife was Harriet Jones, born 1830, daughter of Clayton and Malissie Jones. To them were born seven children, viz:

Mr. Avera was a private in Company "E", 54th Georgia Infantry Regiment in the Confederate Army. His home was on 10-mile Creek in Berrien County, where he had a fine plantation.
Mr. Avera and his wife, Harriet, were originally members of Flat Creek Primitive Baptist Church. The church record does not show when he was received, but she was received and baptized Aug. 10, 1850, before her marriage. She was a member there until her death July 24, 1882. Mr. Avera transferred his membership to Empire Church, and subsequently became an organizing member of New Hope Church nearer his home. He died March 2, 1896, and was buried by his first wife in the 10-mile Creek Cemetery.
The second wife of Mr. Avera was Mrs. Martha Dearing, but there was no further issue. She was the widow of George C. Dearing and daughter of Nathan W. Byrd (Vol. I).
