O'BERRY, JOHN JORDAN1809-1888 PIERCE
John Jordan O'Berry was born in McIntosh County, April 17, 1809, a son of Solomon and Mary O'Berry, natives of South Carolina. His wife was Sarah Bassett, born June 6, 1815, in McIntosh County. She was likely a daughter of
Elias (or Eli) Bassett, and sister to William Bassett (Vol.VII). To them were born the following children:
1. Henry Bassettb. 1836, m. Rebecca Dowling, dau. of James.
2. James R.b. 1839, m. Mrs. Albritton Winn, widow of Moses.
3. Reubin B.b. 1841, died single, December 1859.
4. John Marionb. 1843, m. Mary Frances Jones in Florida.
5. Maryb. 1846, m. Isham Crews.
6. Joseph W.b. 1848, m. Artie Frances Durrance, in Florida, dau. of F.M.
7. Sarahb. 1851, m. George W. Batten.
8. Absalomb. 1852, dead in 1870.
9. Thomasb. 1854, m. unknown.
10. Solomonb. 1857, m. Sarah Jane Howard, dau. of Henry N., 1/31/1878.
NOTE: John J. O'Berry's mother, Mrs. Mary O'Berry, was born in 1792 in South Carolina and was living in Ware (now Pierce) County in the 1850 census, with Louisa O'Berry, born in 1837, and Daniel J. O'Berry, born 1839. The said Louisa and Daniel J. are believed to be the children of John J. O'Berry also, but at this time, there seems to be no way of verifying this assumption. About 1864, Daniel married Mrs. Elizabeth Dykes, widow of George Dykes, and daughter of William G. Riggins of Pierce County. Daniel J. O'Berry and wife are buried in Shiloh Church cemetery, Pierce County.
Mr. O'Berry moved to Ware County from McIntosh County about 1842-4, and lived in the 9th land district. His wife died there September 24, 1867, and was buried in Shiloh Church Cemetery. He married again about 1868, but her maiden name is unknown, her name, in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, is shown as Ann. She died December 15, 1899, and is also buried in Shiloh Church Cemetery. Mr. O'Berry died March 4, 1888. His marked grave is between his two wives.
Four of the O'Berry sons, soon after the Civil War, moved to Hillsborough County, Florida area. These sons were Henry B., James R., John M., and Joseph W. O'Berry. Their sister, Mrs. Batten, and family also moved there. James R. was the first of the four brothers to moved to Florida, and was followed long afterwards by the others. Their descendants form a very large family connection in that area, much larger than the others who remained in Pierce County.
