Matthew Sweat was born June 24, 1821, in Bulloch county, son of William Sweat. He married Jan. 17, 1845, to his 1st cousin, Sarah Sweat, daughter of Nathan Sweat (Vol.III). She was born Dec. 10, 1828, in Emanuel county. To this marriage were born nine children:

Matthew Sweat served in the Indian War in Capt. James A. Sweat's company of Ware county militia, serving four different terms of enlistment, viz: Private, Aug. 31st to Dec. 31, 1838; Aug. 19th to Nov. 18, 1840; Corporal, Nov. 19, 1840 to June 1st, 1841, and Oct. 6, 1841 to Dec. 3, 1841.
Mr. Sweat was brought by his parents to Ware county when he was eight years old, and after marriage he settled on a tract of land in the forks of Big Hurricane and Little Hurricane Creeks, where he built his home, cleared up a farm and lived until his death. His residence was cut into Pierce County in its creation out of Ware in 1858.
Matthew Sweat held public office in both Ware and Pierce county as follows: Justice of Peace, 1030th district, 1849-51; Receiver of Tax Returns and Tax Collector (offices combined) 1851-53; Representative from Ware county, 1853-54. In Pierce county he was Receiver of Tax Returns, 1866-68 and again 1885-87; Coroner, 1895-97; and Justice of Peace, Jan. 1897, until his death June 11, 1899.
Mr. Sweat and most of his family were members of the Methodist Church. He was a local preacher in his church for many years and often led in prayer-meetings, class-meetings, praise-services, and conducted preaching services in revivals. He was regarded as a truly pious and exemplary Christian by all who knew him.
Mrs. Sweat died Jan. 20, 1893. She and her husband were buried in old Bethel Church Cemetery near their old homeplace in present Bacon county.
