CARTER, Samuel
1796-1894

SAMUEL CARTER, a son of Elijah Carter and first cousin to Capt. Jesse Carter (q. v.), was born January 13, 1796, in Colleton district, South Carolina, near the Barnwell district line. Elijah Carter lived to be 107 years old and died about 1875-1880 in Barnwell district, South Carolina, where he lived. Samuel's sister, Rebecca, married Levi Drawdy, of Barnwell district, and moved to Lowndes county, also his brothers, Isaac, John and Elijah. All removed to Lowndes county at the same time (about 1829) that Samuel Carter came. They settled near the Alapaha River on the west side, and Samuel later bought land on the south side of Banks Pond where he had a large plantation and lived until his death January 11, 1894, age 97 years, 11 months and 28 days. Samuel married Mary Lee, born 1796, in Barnwell district, South Carolina She was a sister of Joshua and Jesse Lee, who also came to Georgia from Barnwell District, South Carolina and lived in old Lowndes County. She died about 1865, and Samuel Carter later married a widow, Mrs. Nelson of Berrien County, but there was no issue. Children of Samuel and Mary Carter were:

1. David b. 1820, South Carolina m. Annie Shearhouse.
2. Isabelleb. 1823, South Carolina, m. Isham. H. Peters. No Issue.

Mr. and Mrs. Carter were both baptized into membership of Union Primitive Baptist Church, February 11, 1832. She died a member but he appears to have been excluded (date not shown). Both were buried at Union Church.
Mr. Carter served in the War of 1812, also in the Indian War in 1838 as a private in Capt. Jesse Carter's company of Lowndes County militia.
Descendants of Samuel and Pollie today form a very large family connection of Lanier and Berrien Counties.

CARTER, SAMUEL (p. 43). He served as a private under Capt. Samuel E. Swilley in the 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, Indian War, June 16 to Dec. 16, 1837. (2) News item in The Valdosta Times of Jan. 13, 1894:

"Uncle Sammy Carter', aged and honored citizen of Lowndes County, died at his residence in the northeastern portion of the county at one o'clock Thursday morning last. If he had lived until to-day (Saturday) he would have been 98 years old. Mr. Carter came to Irwin, now Lowndes County, 68 years ago and settled on the place where he died. He moved once over the Alapaha River a few miles away but the next year moved back to the original settlement. He was born and raised in Barnwell District, S. C., and was sixteen years old when the War of 1812 broke out. He served in the American Army during the latter part of that war, and fought in the Indian War of 1836. Mr. Carter was the father of nine children, and his grand and great grandchildren are almost innumerable. He was a quiet peace loving, unassuming, law-abiding citizen and a mem ber of the Primitive Baptist Church . . . His father (Elijah Carter) lived to the advanced age of 107 years and died In South Carolina not many years ago since the War. Uncle Sammy's end was peaceful and painless. He died away like a child falling to sleep . . .

Since the above was put in type, Mr. Q. L. Carter of Valdosta, a grandson of Uncle Sammy, received a telegram announcing the death in Colquitt County of Mr. Griffin Carter, Uncle Sammy's second son; he was about 72 years old. The telegram announced that the body would be brought to his father's for the burial on Saturday (today). His family had not heard of the death of Uncle Sammy, The father at the age of 98 and the son at the age of 72, died on the some day."

The Hon. H, D. O'Quin wrote a series of articles in The Valdosta Times in 1889 dealing with his recollections of the Carter family, his grandmother being a Carter, He himself spent his boyhood in Bamwell District, S, C., where the family lived, some of them living in adjoining Colleton District.
