William M. Avera, a son of Daniel Avera (Vol. 1), was born in Wilkinson County, July 3, 1834, and came with his parents in his childhood to Irwin, now Berrien, County, where he grew up and married. His wife was Harriet Jones, born 1830, daughter of Clayton and Malissie Jones. To them were born seven children, viz:

1. Harmon Gaskinb. 1854,m. Annie Byrd, dau. of N. W. (Vol. II).
2. Malissleb. 1855,m. James Luke, Nov. 21, 1870, son of D. M. Jr.
3. Henry W.b. 1857,m. Jemima Cowart, Jan 30, 1876, dau. of Miles.
4. Daniel Websterb. 1859, m. Martha King, April 8, 1877.
5. Francesb. 1861, m. David Chambliss.
6. Marthab. 1864, m. George R. Ham.
7. Irwin Claytonb. 1869, m. Blansett Griner.

Mr. Avera was a private in Company "E", 54th Georgia Infantry Regiment in the Confederate Army. His home was on 10-mile Creek in Berrien County, where he had a fine plantation.

Mr. Avera and his wife, Harriet, were originally members of Flat Creek Primitive Baptist Church. The church record does not show when he was received, but she was received and baptized Aug. 10, 1850, before her marriage. She was a member there until her death July 24, 1882. Mr. Avera transferred his membership to Empire Church, and subsequently became an organizing member of New Hope Church nearer his home. He died March 2, 1896, and was buried by his first wife in the 10-mile Creek Cemetery.

The second wife of Mr. Avera was Mrs. Martha Dearing, but there was no further issue. She was the widow of George C. Dearing and daughter of Nathan W. Byrd (Vol. I).

Daniel Avera was born in 1808 in Robeson County, North Carolina, son of Moore Avera. The Avera family was of Welsh ancestry and emigrated to North Carolina before the Revolutionary War. Moore Avera and family emigrated to Wilkinson County, Georgia, where Daniel grew up and married November 5, 1826. His wife was Miss Tobitha Cook, born 1810 near Savannah, daughter of James Cook. She died at the age of 80 years. Their children were:

In 1838 Mr. Avera and family moved to Lowndes County (territory now in Berrien), settled near the Lowndes-Irwin line, and engaged in farming and cattle-raising. In 1858, in order to have unlimited grazing for his cattle, he moved to the southern part of Clinch County near the Florida line. In partnership with William, Harmon, and John Gaskins of Berrien County, they soon had large herds of cattle. This partnership continued until Mr. Avera died.

Mr. Avera died in 1888 and was buried at Good Hope Baptist church in Hamilton County, Florida. His wife died in 1890 and was buried there also.

The 1860 Census shows Mrs. Rebecca Ridgell, born 1780 in South Carolina, living with the family of Daniel Avera. She was Mrs. Avera's mother and after her first husband's death had married a Rigdell but no further children. Peter J. Williams, born 1824 in North Carolina was Mr. Avera's nephew and was living with the family in 1860.

JOHN CREWS - 90

John Crews, 90 year old retired farmer of McAlpin, died here Sunday at the local hospital following a lengthy illness. He was a native of Baker County and had resided in this county for the past 46 years. Funeral services were held at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 P.M. with the Rev. Raymond Roberts and the Rev. Glenn Bunner officiating. Masonic rites were given at the graveside in the Oak Grove Cemetery. The deceased was a member of the Missionary Baptist Faith and of Climax Lodge F. & A. M. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Jessie Smith, Jacksonville, Mrs. Mamie Jones, Okeechobee, and Mrs. Sarah Parker and Mrs. Edna Goff, both of McAlpin; three sons, Pasco and Julius Crews, both of McAlpin and Paul Crews of Torrence, California, 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Active pallbearers were Arnett Hillhouse, Clarence Goff, J.R. Fletcher, W.R. Harrell, Jr. and William Hubbard Gray.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were: R.B. Goff, W.T. Goff, G.W. Clayton, Johnny Bonds, Reginald Scott, Jr. C.P. Huffman, Jack Cross, Jim Carmichael, Lavaughn Sessions and Farris Meeks.
Suwannee Funeral Home, Live Oak, was in charge of arrangements.

wife of Sarah Williams. She had previously been married to James Prevatt who
died as a prisoner of war at Ft. Delaware towards the end of the Civil War. By
her first marriage to James Prevatt she had five children: John M. "Jackson"
Prevatt, William Kell Prevatt, George Elias "Lum" Prevatt, Frances Prevatt and
Elizabeth Prevatt. Sarah Williams Prevatt Crews had 11 children total from her
marriages. A tombstone in memory of her has been erected at Oak Grove Cemetery
by John Burnett. Descendants of hers and both of her husbands are numerous in

Columbia and Baker Counties and throughout Florida. .
