AKINS, JOHN J.
1832-1864 BERRIEN
John J. Akins, a Confederate casualty from Berrien County, was born in Lowndes County in 1832, a son of William Green Akins (Vol. I). He was married in 1851 to Wincy Mullis, born in N. C., in 1836, a daughter of Blackstone Mullis (Vol. I). They had five children, viz:
1. Henryb. 1852, m. Charlotte Bennett., Jan. 23, 1873, dau of Wm. A.
2. Andrew J.b. 1855, m. Nancy Bennett, dau. of William A.
3. Mary Janeb. 1856, m. Thomas Giddens. Mar. 15, 1875 (son of John).
4. Alonzob. 1858, m. (unknown) In Fla. Died there.,
5. Eliasb. 1861. m. Phoebe Avera, dau. of B. W.
Mr. Akins lived on his father's farm and engaged in farming until be volunteered in the Confederate Army, Aug. 28, 1862, in Co. "I", 50th Georgia Infantry Regiment. He was captured in battle, August, 1864, and supposedly died in prison as he never returned home. Mrs. Akins left a widow, kept the home together and managed to rear the children to maturity. She died at he home of her son:, Rev. Andrew J. Akins, in Berrien county about 1905; she was buried in what is now a discarded graveyard and cultivated over in a field on the farm of the late Sam W. Watson about three miles east of Nashville. (Authority for place of burial: W. Henry Griffin, Berrien County historian, deceased).

William E. Clemmons was born in this state in 1805. So far, nothing has been learned as to his place of birth or parentage. His wife was named Lucinda Akins before marriage-, she was born May 15, 1808, in this state. Nothing has been learned as to her place of birth or parentage. They were married apparently in Florida about 1829 since it appears he was the head of a family there in the 1830 census. To Wm. E. and Lucinda were born twelve children, viz:

Wm. E. Clemmons served in the Indian War in Capt. Levi. J. Knight's company of Lowndes County militia in 1833, and also served periods of enlistment in other companies during the war which lasted several years.Mr. and Mrs. Clemmons lived in Hamilton County, Florida, until their first two children (above) were born, then moved to Lowndes County, Georgia, and settled in the eastern part. Later lie moved a few miles eastward and located in Ware County. He was living in Ware when Clinch County was formed in 1850, and was cut into the new county. He was living at the time in the portion of the county now the DuPont district. He died there about 1858.
The widow and minor children continued to live in Clinch County until about 1871 when they removed to the vicinity of Lake Butler, Florida. Moving at the same time were all the married chidren except Mrs. Bennett. Mrs. Clemmons died in Union County, Fla., Oct. 4. 1892, and was buried at Mt. Zion Church, Swift Creek Cemetery. near Lake Butler, She was a member of the Primitive Baptist faith, and was baptized into Prospect Church in Clinch County, Feb. 12, 1859;- she was dismissed by letter July 8, 1871, when she moved away.

Stephen Willis Avera, a son of Daniel and Tobitha Avera (see Vol. 1), was born in Wilkinson County, January 5, 1836, and moved with his parents to present Berrien County in 1845. He was married in Clinch county in 1854 to Miss Martha Elizabeth Akins, born 1837, daughter of William G. Akins (see Vol. 1). To them were born:

Following his marriage Mr. Avera lived in the northwest part of Clinch County in the portion that was in 1920 cut into Lanier County. He lived there two years following his marriage, then moved back to Berrien County which had just been made out of Lowndes County. He farmed there until 1887 when he sold out and moved to Colquitt County and bought a farm near Pleasant Grove Church, and lived there until his death in 1912. He was buried at Pleasant Grove Church.
Mr. Avera served three years in Company "E", 54th Georgia Regiment, C. S. A., having enlisted May 6, 1862. He was 5th Sargent in his company.

Cornelius English, Jr., was born Nov. 27, 1805, in Tattnall County, son of the above Cornelius and Nancy English. He appears to have married twice, though descendants aver he was married only once. The first marriage was in Thomas County, August 21, 1827, to Mrs. Nancy Barrentine. The second marriage was in 1829, to Abegail, born 1805 in Bryan County, daughter of Rev. Matthew Albritton (Vol. I). By the last marriage nine children were born:

2. Nancyb. 1834, never m. Died 1915.
3. Matthew J.b. 183-, m. Flora Margaret Blanton.
4. John Reddingb. 183-, m. MaryAnn Smith.

Cornelius English after marriage, lived in Thomas County and over in Florida in Jefferson County a few years, then moved back to Georgia and located in that portion of Lowndes County that was made into Brooks in 1858. He lived there until about 1845, when he removed to Florida. He lived in Taylor County, Fla., and was County Commissioner of that county, 1857-1859. Then in 1867, he sold out and moved to Hillsboro County, locating where Plant City is now situated. He died there Nov. 30, 1881. His wife, Abegail, died August 12, 1868. She was buried in Seffner Cemetery about five miles from Plant City, while her husband was buried in Mount Enon Cemetery near Plant City.
