RAULERSON, Jacob
1778-1857
WAYNE
JACOB RAULERSON, ancestor of a large family connection of Wayne and Brantley counties, was born in 1778 in South Carolina. He came to Georgia in early life and married. His wife, Mary, was born in this state in 1780 but so far her maiden name has not been learned. Jacob Raulerson moved to Appling County in 1819 and settled on Lot 415, 4th District of Appling County (now in Wayne). This was on the Little Satilla River. He later sold out and settled on the same river on Lot 67, 3rd District of Wayne (now Brantley County) near the present village of Hortense. He died there in 1857. In his will he directed that his body be buried in the "old family burying grounds at Samuel M. Pearson's".
Jacob was married three times:
Nancy Mary Baggs during 1798
Courtney Keightly during 1828
Mary Ann Dennison during 1848
To Jacob and Mary Raulerson were born the following children:
1. Elizabethb. 1803, m. _____ Keen.

7. Ichabodb. 1816, m. (wife unknown).
8. Henrietta b. 1818, m. George W. S. Waldron Sep 5, 1833.
To Jacob and Courtney were born the following children:

13. Isabelleb. 1833, m. Hillery Cason November 25, 1851.
14. (name unknown)b. 18__, m. Abraham N. Knight.
The will of Jacob Raulerson was dated April 22, 1857, and was probated November 2, 1857, and named his sons, Russell and James F. Raulerson, and son-in-law, Samuel M. Pearson, as executors. It directed that his five slaves, all his other personal property, and a lot in Cherokee County and land Lots 67 and 247 in the 3rd district, Wayne County, be sold and proceeds equally divided between Ichabod, James F., Russell, David and Wade H. Raulerson, Samuel M. Pearson, Hillery Cason and Abraham N. Knight. The other children were allowed nominal legacies of $10 each. His wife, Mary, was provided for in the will. The estate inventory showed a total of $3235.83 in notes and accounts and "perishables," and $8223.74 in slaves, lands, etc. It appears that the deceased was operating a country store at the time of his death in addition to his plantation operations.
Mr. Raulerson served in the militia during the War of 1812 serving as a lieutenant in the Wayne County militia in 1813, and as a mounted spy under Capt. Richard Walker at Fort Wayne on the Wayne County frontier in the winter of 1814-1815.

Attached is an interesting story. There are some inaccuracies but interesting nonetheless:
From the Tampa Tribune, January 15,1956
Preface:
Albert Devane of Lake Placid, whose obsessing hobby is the tracing and recording of genealogical records of pioneer South Florida families has traced the record of one well known family which is truly remarkable-three generations in 200 years.
Mr. Devane says," I think it is the most unique and unusual story I have ever unearthed in genealogy and biographical research. Rev Thomas Crews, 82 years of age, a neighbor I have known for 35 years, is the grandson of a Revolutionary War soldier- a span of 200 years in three generations! His father was born 149 years ago (wrong; Alexander was born during 1771).
John Collier, Sr., and Irving Lockler, Sr., was Rev. Thomas Crews' uncles and brother-in-law to his father. Also Rubin Carlton, son of Alderman, and brother to Daniel, former Governor Doyle Carlton's grandfather, was an uncle. It is a great story, particularly appropriate for the Pioneer Florida page.
"My grandfather was born 200 years age, in 1755. He was 21 years old at the start of the Revolutionary War, and fought in many battles. He was also in the war of 1812, and 1817 fought against the Creek Indians along the Wayne Co., GA frontier.
"Can you believe it? It's true. My father was born 149 years ago, July 23,1806. He fought in the First and Second Seminole Indian Wars, also in the Civil War" So say's Rev. Thomas Crews of Venus, FL, 82 years of age, who also has a living sister, Mrs. Charity Crews Allen of Tampa, age 77 years.
Due to the advance age of Rev. Thomas Crews' grandfather, Alexander Crews, and to the very advanced age of his father, Dempsey Dubois Crews, when Rev, Thomas Crews, the subject, was born, this accounts for the long span of 200 years within three generations. Is there another grandson or granddaughter of a Revolutionary soldier living today in this great United States? If so they could form one of America's most exclusive clubs.
" I shall give a short biographical sketch of Alexander Crews, the grand father of the subject Rev. Thomas Crews; also his father Dempsey Dubois Crews, Sr.
Alexander Crews was born in the Charleston District, S.C. in 1755. He was the son of John Crews, who settled in the same district in the 17th century. He was married twice. The name of his first wife is not known. His second wife, Lucy Dubois, was born in 1785 in South Carolina. There were 13 children by the two wives, four sons, by his first wife, Stephen, William, Alexander Jr., John (John is not a son), and 9 children by his second wife.
Dempsey Dubois Crews, Sr., father of the subject, Rev. Thomas Crews, was the oldest child by the second marriage. Born July 23, 1806, he had five brothers, Micajah, James, Samuel, Archibald and Bryant, and three sisters, Lavina Sophia, and Pennie.
Alexander Crews moved into North Georgia in 1816 or 1817 and in 1819 moved again into Camden Co., GA, which was later subdivided into Charlton County in 1854, later divided into Brantley County. Alexander Crews died in 1848, 93 years of age on the old Crews homestead in Brantley County, according to the youngest son, the late Bryant Crews of Ware County, GA.
"Dempsey D. Crews, Sr., was brother-in-law of Maxwell Whidden Sr. who married his sister, Sophie. Whidden moved to Florida in 1826 or 1827. Whidden's son Eli was born there in 1828 in what was the Alachua Co., six years before the creation of Hillsborough County. His son later married Lavenia Pratt, another pioneer in the Plant City area.
In 1848, after his father's death, Dempsey and his two brothers-in-law, Irving Lockler Sr., who married his sister Penelope [Pennie], and his wife's brother, John Collier Sr., all moved from Georgia to South Florida to join their brother-in-law Maxfield Whidden, Sr., who was living in Hillsborough County.
With their families in an ox cart caravan, followed by a small herd of cattle, they started on a slow but steady pace to the most southern Florida frontier of the time. They were armed with muskets and had good dogs. Corn and sweet potatoes were packed in their carts. The forest, abounding with deer and wild turkey solved many of their food problems.
Also stored in their wagons were the chopping axes, broadaxe, foot adz, crosscut saw, auger bits, fro and drawing knife, all needed in erecting their frontier log houses. They moved slowly and their final stop was in the southern part of Hillsborough County, now Zolfo.
"Dempsey Crews Sr., blazed the first road from the Fort Green-Wauchula territory across the Peace River to the territory of Zolfo and Crewsville. He selected the site for the ford, graded the slopes, and drove the first yoke of oxen across it. Being first known as Crews Ford, later as Beannen Ford, it was about a half mile east of the present state road from Wauchula to Zolfo "Log houses were built, rails were split, and fences were built. Cows were penned for milk, later the pens we moved to a new site. Land was then planted to grow sweet potatoes and corn, a garden enclosed by high railing fence to keep out varmints, chickens and wild turkeys. Then sugar cane and a small patch of cotton were added, and life on the frontier had begun.
Due to the frontier being opened and survey parties being further inland with their surveys, the Indians became hostile. On July 17, 1849 at Dempsey Whidden's store and home on Payne's Creek Indians killed, him and George S. Payne. It became necessary to move the frontier families to old Fort Green for protection. Several companies of Florida militia were moved into service that July 1849 and continued on the frontier until December, when everything quieted down and there was no more trouble with the Indians, until 1856 and 1858, the last Seminole War, when Billy Bowlegs and a part of his band agreed to emigrate to Arkansas and departed from Ft. Myers on May 4,1858, aboard the steamer Gray Cloud.
"When Florida seceded from the Union on Jan. 10,1861, most of the pioneers were in sympathy with the South and joined the Confederacy. Some were enlisted in the cattle battalion; others saw service from Missionary Ridge to Gettysburg. "Dempsey Crews Sr. had quite a war record. He was with General John Floyd of the Georgia militia on an expedition into the Okeefenokee Swamp in 1831, also in 1838 along the Florida frontier. He was in Florida militia in 1849; also in the last Seminole War in 1856-1858, he was also in the Confederate Army.
"In 1867, Dempsey Crews Jr., and his uncle John Collier Sr., and father-in-law Enoch Collins Jr., moved from Zolfo and settled in the area later known as Crownsville, opening up a store and post office. There were several homes and two or three stores and it was a thriving frontier town until the railroad came south from Bartow to Punta Gorda. The post office was moved soon afterward to Zolfo. Some of the stores also moved to the railroad. The coming of the railroad terminated the job of Acrefoot Johnson, the "walking mailman" who carried the mail on foot from Ft. Meade to Punta Gorda.
Dempsey D. Crews married Piety Collier in old Camden County, Georgia. To them the following children were born; Henry B. on Aug. 16, 1836, who married Susan Wingate, daughter of William Wingate.William M. born on Aug. 27,1841 who died young; Elizabeth on Feb. 16,1849, who married Rueben Carlton, son of Lt. Alderman Carlton [who was killed by Indians at the Willoughby Tillis place at Ft. Meade June 16,1856]; Dempsey D. Jr., born Nov. 23,1846, who married Fannie Collins, daughter of Enoch Collins Jr., Lydia, on May 16,1849, who married Streety Hair, son of Calvin Hair,; Willis, on Feb. 27,1854, who married Mary Wingate, daughter of William Wingate; Crawford on Sept. 18, 1858, who married William Lee, son of Jessie Lee; Willoughby on Jan 26,1862, who died young.
"His first wife died from small pox in 1862 and was buried in the old Wachula cemetery; his second wife was Molcy Hair, daughter of Calvin Hair, born Dec. 23, 1837. To them the following children were born, Sarah Jane on Nov. 13,1866, who burned to death at the age of eight; William C. on Nov 30, 1866 who married Cornelia Whidden, daughter of David Whidden; Isham on July 17,1869 who married Azeline Gill, daughter of James Gill; Sophie on Jan 1, 1872 who married Luke Altman, son of John Altman; Thomas on Jan 25,1874 who married Ava Bailey, daughter of Willoughby Bailey; Edward on Oct. 15, 1877 who died when eight years old and Charity on June 18, 1879 who married Chester Burnett, son of Button Burnett and whose second husband was Lester Allen."
"The addresses of the two living children of Dempsey D. Crews, Sr. who was born 149 years ago are: Rev. Thomas Crews, Venus, Fla: and Mrs. Leslie Allen, 4806 Ola Avenue, Tampa. Their grandfather was born 200 years ago."

John Carter, third son of Captain Thomas and Katharine
Dale Carter, "was born*^ ye 8'^ May 1674 and bap'^ Sunday ye
14th and had for God parents Coll. John Carter, ^1' Jno : Stretch-
ley and :M" Ball."\emdash Prayer Book.
The Colonel John Carter mentioned as a godfather must have
been Col. John Carter, Jr., of "Corotoman," as Col. John Carter,
Sr., died in 1669.
June 24, 1703, John Carter and his brothers, Thomas and
Henry, gave bond of five hundred pounds sterling to their brother.
Edward, guaranteeing his possession of a hundred acres of land
left by their father, "Thomas Carter late of this county Gent
dec'd." This is the last appearance of John Carter in the records
of Lancaster, and until I had access to the Carter MSS. of 185S
I was at a loss as to where he settled after leaving Lancaster.
This speaks of him and his descendants as follows :
'T have never known but one member of this branch of the
Carter family and that was a Mr. Norborn Sutton, a lawyer
living in Caroline. A few years ago he spent several days in
Lancaster, taking depositions in a suit I saw him at the court-
house, and on hearing my name he said his grandfather was
a Carter. He spent Sunday with me and I found him a pleasant.
well informed man. He knew a lot about his people and told
me that his grandfather's father was a John Carter, who settled
in Caroline from Lancaster before the county was formed. He
did not know the name of John's father, but I believe it must
have been our old ancestor. Tom, who had a son, John. He
said that this John was married three times ; first to a ^liss Ball.
who was a sister or cousin of General Washington's mother. She
died without leaving any children. He then married a ^liss
Pavne and had several daughter^ none of which m.arried, and

after she died he married a ]\\Iis3 Todd of King- and Queen
county and settled in that county. She was an heiress and brought
him a nice dot in land and slaves. They had sons, Thomas. John,
Mr. Sutton's grandfather, WilHam, who has descendants now in
Carohne, Robert, of King and Queen, and James, v.-ho left no cliil-
dren ; and a daughter, ^Margaret, who never married. John, the
oldest son, was married twice, first to a IMiss Betsy Armstead, of
Richmond county, and last to a Miss tiannah Chew, of Spottsyl-
vania. The first wife had sons, William, married Curtis; John,
married Sinjon, and daughters, Fanny, married Curtis ; Martha,
married Goodlo ; xA.nn. married Heslop : Peggy, married Mar-

the mother of Mr. N. S. The last wife had son, Robert, never
married, and daughters, Mary, married Stevens ; ^^largaret Chew.
married Taliaferro ; Judy, married Sutton. Lucy, married Talia-
fero, and Tilly, never married. He was a captain in tb.e War
of Independence and was a man of great means and fine style
of living. His children all had big families, who are scattered
everywhere. John Carter, first of Caroline, lived to be very
old."
The old Prayer Book has the record of John Carter's first and
last marriage, but gives nothing of the second.
"John Carter & Frances Ball was Mar'd on Tuesday the 21st
Day Xov^'r 1698." She was a daughter of Joseph Ball, of 'Epping
Forest,' and his first wife. Elizabeth Romney, as shown by the
notice of her death in the Carter records. She was born in 1681
and was, therefore, Jos. Ball's eldest daughter. As her only
child died in 1700 it is easily seen why she does not appear in
the partition deed made in 1707 by Colonel Ball to his daugh-
ters, and likewise in his will in 171 1.
"Frances the loving & dear wife of John Carter and Dau.
of M^ Joseph Ball and Elizabeth his Wife Departed this life at
5 min*^ to 8 a clock in the ]Morning of y^ 3'^ day of Sep"" 1699
three hours after she was Deliv** of a Son in the i8th Year of
her life. And was buried on the 5^ day at S' Marys White
Chappell attended by an Aftectionate and Sorrowing Husband
and a large Concorde of Relatives and friends."
272 GENEALOGY OF THE CARTER FAMILY
"Joseph Ball Carter followed his mother to the Grave on the
1st day of July 1700 of a Flux and was buried at S' Marys on
ye 2"^.'"
Colonel Joseph Ball, as is well known, was the father of ^lary
Ball Washington, the mother of General George Washington.
As his daughter Frances Carter left no surviving issue no notes
of the Ball family will be given here; but will appear at other
places in this book, as there were five intermarriages between the
descendants of the emigrant?, Captain William Ball. Sr., and
Captain Thomas Carter, Sr.
Nothing is known of the second wife and children of John
Carter more than is given above. The date of the third mar-
riage is as follows :
"John Carter was married to Margaret, the Dau*" of ^1" W""
todd dec'd on the 4th day of June 17 14 by R' M' J. Shafe at
10 o'clock in the morn^."
