GRIFFIN, James
1793-1860
WARE

JAMES GRIFFIN was born about 1795 in South Carolina. His parents' names are at present unknown. The 1840 Census indicates he was born between 1790 and 1800, whereas, the 1850 Census says he was 47 years old. The former is considered correct, and he was probably 57 years old in 1850 instead of 47. Likewise his wife's age is indicated to have been before 1800, in the 1840 Census, but the 1850 Census shows her 42 years old. As the oldest son, William, was born 1815, she was probably born about 1798-1800. Her name was Nancy and she was said by descendants to have probably been a Burnside. To James Griffin and wife were born:

1. Williamb. 1815, m. Cynthia Strickland.
2. Dempseyb. 1825, m. Mary E. Dowling.
3. Jamesb. 1829, m. Isabelle Jones.
4. Edward T.b. 1833, m. Mary Margaret Mizell.
5. Alfredb. 1836, m. Nancy.
6. Elenderb. 1837, m. Henry Strickland.
7. Washingtonb. 1840, m. ______ Albritton, daughter of Thomas.

James Griffin and family lived in Bulloch and Bryan counties until they moved to Ware County about 1835. They settled in territory now in Brantley County, in the vicinity of High Bluff Church. There he bought land and built his home. He had a good sized plantation in operation at his death. He had seventeen slaves and one of these attacked him with a knife and disemboweled him, with fatal results. This in March, 1860, on his plantation on Big Creek. The slave was captured and hung.

Mrs. Griffin died in December, 1859, only four months before her husband's tragic death. Both were buried at High Bluff Church. The graves are unmarked. In the creation of Pierce County out of Ware in 1858, the Griffin family was cut into that county. The sons William and James were the administrators of his estate, and were dismissed in 1861, having closed out the estate.

Mr. Griffin was 2nd Sergeant in Capt. James Walker's company of Ware County militia in the Indian War in 1838.

GEIGER, ASA.
1799-1873
WARE

Asa Geiger was born in Bryan County in 1799, son of Abraham and Mary Geiger, and grandson of Ulrick Geiger (Kegar), a German emigrant to Georgia in the days of Oglethorpe. His first wife was named Nancy but her maiden name is unknown. Born to them were the following children:

1. James Williamb. 1821, Ga., m. Abegail Daugharty.
2. Rebeecab. 1828, Ga., m. Thomas E. Thomas.
3. John A.b. 1830, Ga., m. Arminda Fullwood, dau. of Thos. Jr.
4. David E.b. 1832, Fla. m. Matilda Corbitt, dau. of Daniel.
5. Amandab. 1835, Ga., m. William C. Bennett. Moved to Fla.
6. Nancyb. 1837, Fla. m. Richard Corbitt.

Asa Geiger removed from Bryan County in 1830 to Gadsden 'County, Fla., and two or three years later moved back to Georgia and lived in Lowndes County In the portion later cut into Brooks County. He then moved to Jefferson County, Fla., 1833 but was back in Lowndes County in the 1840 census. His Jefferson County home was on a tract of 80 acres in Section 4, Township 2, which he joined by his wife Nancy sold to Daniel Lingo, Feb, 7, 1835 (Deed Book "C", page 48, Jefferson County). On Aug. 13, 1840, lot of land 43, 16th district of Lowndes (now Echols County) was granted him by the State, it having been drawn by him in the 1820 lottery while living in Bryan County. He moved there to that location and lived there until he moved to Ware County in 1843, where he settled in the present Manor district.

Following his first wife's death about 1845, Mr. Gelger married Mrs. Fannie (Frances) Bennett, born 1800 in North Carolina, widow of John Bennett (Vol. I), and sister to Thompson Harris (Vol.I) and Hampton Harris (Vol,111). There were no children born by that marriage.

Asa and Nancy Geiger were charter members of Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church in present Brooks County, Nov. 29, 1834. They transferred their membership to Unity Church in Lowndes County, March 16, 1842, from Bethlehem; and on May 27, 1843, were granted letters of dismission by Unity and they moved their membership to Providence Church, Ware County. He served as church clerk there 1860-61, and died a member about 1873. He and his wives were buried at Providence Church; graves unmarked.
