General Notes: Husband - James Carter
Descendants of James Carter of Westmoreland
County, Virginia
James Carter, son of Captain Thomas Carter, Jr., of "Bar-
ford," and his wife, Arabella Williamson, was probably the sixth
son. He was probably married about 1728, as in that year his
father made a deed of gift to him for a negro man, and also
left him in his will "the great bed and furniture above stairs,"
besides a share in the residuary estate.
From the peculiar name of James Carter's wife \emdash Joyce \emdash it
is thought that she may have been a granddaughter of Daniel
and Joyce Holland, of Northumberland county. She may pos-
sibly have been a daughter of Daniel Neale (born 1642, died
1727) and his wife, Elizabeth, a daughter of Daniel and Joyce
Holland, as James Carter's descendants perpetuated names pe-
culiar to the Neale family. Richard Carter, a grandson of James
and Joyce, owned land in Northumberland, which he seems to
have had by inheritance, probably through his grandmother.
James Carter does not appear in the Lancaster records after
the death of his father, in 1733. Jan. 24, 1746, James Carter,
of Washington parish, Westmoreland county, had a lease of a
plantation in that parish from Daniel McCarthy for the term
of his lifetime, for which he paid a yearly rental of £6 5s. This
term was very short, as on May 8, 1748, the inventory of the
estate of James Carter, deceased, was returned to the Westmore-
land court by Joice Carter, his relict and administratrix.
Sept. 29, 1747, Edward Carter was appointed guardian of his
brother's orphans, named as follows : Thomas, James, Edward
and Sarah Carter. For the next thirteen years he returned an-
nual reports of their estate to the court, and in 1758 petitioned
the House of Burgesses for pay for a runaway slave of James
Carter's heirs, who had been legally outlawed, and was later
found dead in the woods.
June 30, 1761, the Westmoreland county court ordered that the
estate of James Carter, deceased, be divided between his orphans
2l8 GENEALOGY OF THE CARTER FAMILY
according to law, viz. : Thomas Carter, James Carter, Edward
Carter and Sarah Carter. They must have all been of age at this
time, and were probably born as follows :
i. Thomas Carter, born circa 1733- 1734, died in 1781.
2. James Carter, born circa 1735-1736.
3. Edward Carter, born circa 1737-1738.
4. Sarah Carter, born circa 1739-40.
The commissioners appointed by the court in 1761 reported
to the court on March 29, 1763, that this division had been made.
I have no data of the descendants of Edward, James or Sarah
Carter, but Edward and James may have been the ancestors
of the Carters named in the following Westmoreland marriage
bonds:
Elizabeth Carter and Richard Weaver, Aug. 30, 1786; Martha
Carter and Jeremiah Edmonds, April 2, 1791 ; Elizabeth Carter
and Reuben Gutridge, July 13, 1797; Sarah Carter and William
Wroe, June 27, 1797; John Carter and Mary Carter, Sept. 19,
J 797; Catharine Carter and Herman Jenkins, Oct. 20, 1801 ;
Elizabeth Carter and William Ryals, 1806; Daniel Carter and
Naomi Fones, Sept. 9, 1807; Polly Carter and Charles Tuxan,
Jan. 6, 1819; Daniel Carter and Sally Hinson, Oct. 30, 1822.
The last two named may have been grandchildren of Thomas
Carter, eldest son of James.
1. Thomas Carter, supposed to have been the eldest son of
James and Joyce Carter \emdash at least the eldest of those who were
under age when James Carter died, probably married about
1760- 1765. His wife's name was Ann and the name of her
youngest son, Presley Carter, suggests that she may have been
a member of the family of Neale, Stone, McKenny, Cox ai
Garner, in all of which Presley was a given name ; however,
as suggested above, this name may have come into this branch
of the Carter family through the wife of James Carter.

JOHNS, LEVI
1780-1920 CAMDEN
Levi Johns was born in Beaufort District, South Carolina, about 1779-83, a son of Jeremiah and Levicy Johns. The parents moved, around 1800, to Camden County, Georgia, accompanied by most of their grown, married children and their families. Levi Johns' wife's name cannot be learned, but was thought to be Keziah, maiden name unknown. They had the following children:
1. Averillab. 1804, m. John Lee (Vol.Vl).
2. Levi, Jr.b. 1806, m. Mary Kelly, 12/14/1823. dau. of Wm.
3. Amyb. 1808, m. Joseph Crews, 2/10/1825.
4. Jacobb. 1807, m. Elizabeth Stafford, 12/21/1826.
5. Archibaldb. 1812, m. unknown.
6. Jeremiah E.b. c1816, m. Louisa ???????.
Levi Johns apparently died in the prime of life, about 1820. Camden estate records show that John Lee was appointed June 7, 1824, as guardian of Levi, Jr. and Jacob Johns, orphans of Levi Johns under the age of 14. These orphans had registered to participate in the 1821 land lottery, and drew lot 91, 9th district of Monroe County. On June 6, 1825, the guardian was granted leave to sell that lot of land at public sale. Most of this family moved to Florida. Levi Johns, Jr., moved to Alachua County, Florida, where he appears in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. John Lee and family moved to Hamilton County, Florida, about 1830. Later Archibald also moved to Florida. The son, Jeremiah E. Johns, lived in Wayne County. He served in the Confederate Army, and was a Corporal and later 2nd Sgt. in Company "A", 50th Georgia Regiment, and died in the service, January 25, 1865. The son, Jacob, died in Camden County in 1829, leaving two small children. His widow Elizabeth married John Crews, July 15, 1830. Stephen Crews and family also moved to Florida.

General Notes: Husband - John Carter Sr.
John Carter who usually signed his name John Carter, Sr., to distinguish himself from his first cousin John Carter, was born in Colleton District, S. C., in 1794, a son of Elijah Carter. He was married there about 1825 and his wife was named Lavina, sometimes called "Vincy", born 1799 in South Carolina, but her maiden name is unknown. John and Lavinia had 8 children.
Mr. Carter removed from his old home in South Carolina, near Little Salkehatchie River to Lowndes County, Georgia about 1830. His home was cut out of Lowndes into Echols County in 1858, and, he died there about 1880. His wife died soon after. They were buried in the Sardis Baptist Church (Carter) Cemetery not far from their home; graves unmarked.
Mr. Carter was a First Lieutenant in the militia in the 661st district of Lowndes County, 1832-33 and served as an ensign in the same company, 1835-39. He served an enlistment as a private under Capt. Samuel E. Swilley in the 2nd Regiment, Florida militia, June 16th to Dec. 16th, 1837, in the Indian War.
John Carter, Sr., was baptized into the membership of Union Primitive Baptist Church; August 9, 1840; and the next year, on June 9, 1841, was dismissed by letter with others, to join in the constituting of Antioch Church which was nearer his home. He became a charter member of Antioch and continued a member there for some years, as did his wife.

THE BAKER COUNTY PRESS, Thursday May 11, 1978, Page Two THE WAY IT WAS -
Gene Barber Some Notes On The Johns Family
" A widespread and prolific family in south Georgia and northeast Florida, most of the Johns family seem to be descendents of a Jeremiah 'Jerry' Johns who was born before the Revolutionary War in North Carolina. Jeremiah and his wife Levicy (an old form of 'Louisa') lived in South Carolina and Georgia into the first quarter of the 19th century. The names of his children will be readily recognizable as popular names for many of the present Johns generation... Sarah, born about 1809 in South Carolina married Joseph, son of Samuel Crews, and was responsible for many of that clan throughout southeast Georgia and northeast Florida.
From the Prospect Church (Hamilton County, Florida) Meeting Minutes:
1/25/1840 - J Johns selected in case of failure as a messenger to bear letters to the association.
7/15/1846 - J Johns is listed as Clerk Protem also 8/22/46, 10/24/46, 11/21/46, 1/23/47.
5/23/1858 - J Johns is Church Clerk, also 11/27/58, 1/22/59, 5/21/59 thru 4/3/69.
2/24/1852 - Brother Jeremiah Johns came forward with an acknowledgement of intoxication and was forgiven.
He was born in SC November 18, 1788. He died in Marian Station, Hamilton County, Florida on July 22, 1869..at the age of 80. His body was interred in the Prospect Church Cemetery at Belmont, Hamilton County, FL. This info came from his tombstone, census records, and various other sources. Jeremiah is listed in the registrer of Deceased Veterans of Florida, Vol., #25, page 14. This volume was the work of the Florida Works Projects Administration in 1940-1941. He first married Louvicey (Lucy) circa 1809 in GA. She died circa 1841 in
Marion Station. In the minutes of the Prospect Church for 16 Jan., 1840.."New members accepted by experience David Sistrunk and by letter, Jeremiah and Lucy Johns...Philemon Bryan, Clerk"
He then married Rachael Johnson before 1850 in Marion Station. This was her second marriage. She was born in 1816 in NC. According to the 1860 census Rachael could neither read nor write. She was received into the Prospect Church by experience Saturday November 23, 1850. She was dismissed by letter in 1890 because she was joining a son, Cornelious, in Orange County.
Jeremiah served in the military in the First Regiment, Warrens Militia and in Robert Youngbloods detachment in the Seminole Indian Wars in 1837 and 1838. He enrolled in Hamilton County on Jan., 10, 1837 and served four months and 10 days; he then enrolled at FT. Pierce June 16, 1837 and served until Dec., 6, 1837. He also enrolled at Ft Pierce on April 6, 1838 and served until July 22, 1838 when he was discharged.
In the 1850 Hamilton County census he is listed as the head of the family with his wife Rachael and Matthew, 22, Martha, 13 and Jeremiah, 10. Also present were Rachael's two sons by her previous marriage, Lewis, 11, and George H., 7.
In the 1840 Census Jeremiah is listed as owning 5 slaves. In the 1830 Census he was listed as the head of a family.
Heritage Books, "Records of Tallassee and Newmansville General Land Office" (1825-1892) page 148 dated March 9, 1837 lists Jeremiah's land as one mile south of Genoa, FL.
"Bits and Pieces":
He voted in the election of 1833 to elect a delegate to Congress. He was voter # 1 at Upper Mineral Springs, Precinct #4, Hamilton County, in the first statewide election in May 26, 1845. His son, John C. was voter #2 at the Frances Ross home in that same election.
On January 26, 1839 a petition to Congress was presented by a group of Florida Citizens, Jeremiah included, requesting a grant of a township of land to aid in the founding of Dade Institute. This notice appeared in the Territorial Papers of the United States , The Territory of Florida, 1834-1839, (National Archives).
He was the Justice of the Peace in Hamilton County as of September 9, 1851. Jeremiah deeded his land to his wife, Rachael, in 1866. It was recorded Feb., 13, 1866. The Deed is listed in Deed Book, "F", page 589, Hamilton County, Florida. He lived on Camp Branch until his death.
His first wife is something of a mystery; Lillian Adams a great grandaughter of Jeremiah, born Nov., 8, 1882 and died Nov., 26, 1971, provided information about 45 different members of the Johns Family in 1965. She said that his first wife was Louvicy Walker??? The other info that could be checked proved accurate--it was, however, of more recent vintage???)
We now know that Jeremiah and Levicy were married in 1762. To wit:
