CORBITT, RICHARD R.
1833-1903
CLINCH

Richard R. ("Dick") Corbitt of Clinch County, was a son of Daniel Corbitt (Vol.1I), and was born in Ware County in 1833. He grew up and lived in the present Manor district of Ware County, until 1860 when he moved to Clinch County. He was married in 1853 to Nancy Gieger, daughter of Asa Gieger and his first wife, Nancy. She was born in Florida Aug. 20, 1837, and died in Clinch County, Dec. 25, 1890. To Mr. and Mrs. Corbitt were born ten children:

Following the first wife's death, Mr. Corbitt was married May 31, 1892, to Katie, daughter of Joseph and Thaney Jowers, formerly of Coffee County but who at the time were living in Clinch County. They had two sons:

11. Williamb. 1893, to. Rosa Blount. Died 1940.
12. Thomasb. 1899, m. Ella Tippins.

Mr. Corbitt moved to Clinch County in 1860 and settled in the 1141st (Wiregrass) District, and lived there some years, after which he sold out and moved to nearer Homerville in the present Midway community. He bought the old Dr. L. C. Mattox home-place on the railroad three miles east of Homerville, in 1901, and moved there and was living there when he died Feb. 13, 1903. His widow married W. M. Hodge, March 29, 1905, and had further issue. John G. Griffis was the administrator of the large Corbitt estate.

Mr. Corbitt and his first wife were buried in the cemetery at Providence (Camp Branch) Primitive Baptist Church in Ware County, on the Clinch-Ware line.
Mrs. Sarah Nell Corbitt Thomas, the present Ordinary of Clinch County, is a great grand-daughter of Richard and Nancy Corbitt, being a grand-daughter of Randall and Sarah Jane Corbitt.

Richard Corbitt enlisted Sept. 29, 1862, in Co. 'F'. 25th Georgia Regiment, C.S.A., and was paroled 1865. His widow was granted a Confederate pension, October, 1959.

COURSON, JOHN LANIER
1808-1879 Camden

John Lanier Courson was born in this Camden county, Georgia, August 1, 1808, a son of William Courson, R. S., who lived in Camden County. He grew up in Camden, and lived there until the creation of Charlton County out of Camden in 1854, when he was cut into the new county. Mr. Courson was first married to Sarah Carter, born April 1, 1808, in South Carolina, daughter of Elmore and Delilah Carter who moved to Georgia and lived and died in Emanuel County. After the first wife's death in 1868, Mr. Courson married Unity Mathis, born 1830, daughter of John and Jemima (Lee) Mathis of Clinch County. Six children were born by the first wife, and one son by the second wife:

1. Margaret Ann b. August 13, 1835, probably died young.
2. Pliny W.b. January 3, 1837, m. Charity Sweat, daughter of James.
3. Perry A.b. May 10, 1839, m. Mary Ann Mizell.
4. Magninb Sept 14, 1840, never m. Killed In C. S. Army.
5. Marthab: December 31, 1842, m. (l) John J. Moore, died 1862 in CSA (2) John ^ftest^.
6. John Taylorb. March 22, 1948, m. Martha Lee, daughter of Zachariah.
7. Joshua Lanierb. November 11, 1870, idiot; died single, December 24, 1902.

Mr. Courson served under Capt. E. D. Tracy in the Camden County militia in 1838 in the Indian War. He was Justice of Peace, 39th district, Camden County, 1842-1843, and in the 82nd district of Camden, 1847-1849. He was one of the first Justices of Charlton Inferior Court, 1854-1860, and was Tax collector in 1856-1857. In the winter of 1860-1861 he moved to Ware County, and was within a few months elected as a Justice of Ware Inferior Court, serving 1861-1865. In the latter year, 1865, he moved to Clinch County and bought a farm in the 970th district where he was Justice of Peace, 1866-1873.

Mr. Courson was originally a member of Sardis Primitive Baptist Church in Charlton County. He transferred his membership by letter to Prospect Church in Clinch County, December 8, 1866, and died a member in 1879. He was Church Clerk, 1869-1872. His last wife was baptized into Prospect Church, December 1, 1860, and was dismissed by letter December 1, 1883, and united with Olive Leaf Church nearer her home, of which church she died a member.

Mr. Courson's home was on Lot 367, 12th district of Clinch County. He and his first wife are buried at Prospect Church, graves unmarked.
Manning Courson, named above, enlisted October 1, 1861, in Co. "K", 26th Vol. Infantry Regiment, C. S. A. and died of disease, January 2, 1863.

COURSON, JOSHUA1814-1852 BRANTLEY

Joshua Courson was born in 1814 in Camden County, son of William Courson, R.S. He was married in 1838 to Mary Sweat, daughter of John Sweat and grand-daughter of Nathan Sweat, R.S., (Vol.1). She was born in Emanuel County, March 14, 1816. To them were born six children, viz:

1. Elenderb. 1840, m. Joseph Madison Johns.
2. Perry M.b. 1842, m.
3. James A.b. 1845, m. Elizabeth Highsmith, Nov. 23, 1865, dau. of Allen.
4. Charlton L.b. 1847, m. Margaret Crews, dau. of Archibald.
5. John Leeb. 1849, m. Kate Knox, dau. of James (Vol.III).
6. Elizabethb. 1851. m. William Underwood.

Mr. Courson served four enlistments in the Indian War in this section, as follows: As a private in Capt. James A. Sweat's company of Ware County militia, June 9th to Aug. 19, 1838, and from Aug. 31st to Dec. 31, 1838; and as 4th Corporal, same company, Aug. 19, 1840 to June Ist, 1841, and Oct. 6th to Dec. 3, 1841.
Joshua Courson lived in the 9th land district of Ware County, in the portion now in Brantley County. He died at his home about 1852. His widow about two years later married Vincent (or Vinson) Anderson and had further issue. She died March 1, 1906, and was buried at Hickox, Charlton (now Brantley) County.
