General:
William A. Crews, one of the pioneer residents of this section, died early Monday morning at his home on Fourteenth street, following an extended illness.
The deceased was born in this county, and this had always been his home. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Margaret; four sons, Bill and Roy Crews of this county; Geo. C. Crews of Huntington, Calif., and Joe Crews of Kirby, Oregon; three sisters, Mrs. Harold Chilton of St. Augustine, Mrs. Ellie Sweat of New Smyrna, and Mrs. Neil McGlon of West Palm Beach, and one brother, Turney Crews of West Palm Beach.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the family home, with Rev. D. R. Wasdin officiating.
Interment was in Oak Hill East Cemetery. (Times-Herald Obituary dtd Friday, 4 Mar 1938.)

CREWS, WILLIAM B.1819-1898 ECHOLS

William B. Crews was born in Camden County in 1819, son of Stephen Crews (Vol.I). He moved with his parents to Ware County on the west side of the Okefenokee Swamp, before 1830, and grew up in the portion of Ware in the 719th Militia district which was cut into Clinch county in 1850 and Echols in 1858. He was married there in 1840 to Martha North, born 1821, daughter of Capt. John J. North (Vol.1). They had nine children:

Mr. Crews and his wife were members for many years of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Echols county, near his home. She was received and baptized Oct. 1, 1843, and he likewise on Jan. 8, 1844. He served as church clerk 1852-53, and on Nov. 12, 1853, was ordained to the deaconship by the church. Mrs. North was excluded for long-absence, Feb. 3, 1877, but was restored May. 4, 1878. They died members of the church, Mrs. Crews dying in 1895 and he in 1898. They were buried in the cemetery at the church.
Mr. Crews was a private in Capt. Wm. B. North's company, 2nd Florida Regiment of militia, June 16th to Dec. 18, 1837, in the Indian War; and he served as 2nd Lieut., in Capt. John J. North's company of Georgia militia in 1842.

W.B. was a farmer and paid taxes on 490 acres of land in District 719 (#464, District 13), Echols County, between 1873-1880.
