Leo Crews
1902-1962

Leo Crews was born in Lake Park, Georgia 2 Oct. 1902 to Samuel Crews and Sallie Carter. Samuel was a son of Samuel Crews. Sallie was a daughter of Allen and Sarah Carter.

Leo and sister Laura had very difficult early years. They lost their mother Sallie, 12 May 1909. Leo was 6 years of age and Laura was 22 months. Laura likely had no memory of her mother and father. Leo being five years older likely did have some memories of both parents.

Leo was enumerated in the 1910 Census with his father Samuel and sister Laura in Lake Park, Georgia. Leo was 7 and Laura was 23 months. During the period of time that the 1910 census was taken, sister Laura was taken in and raised by Sallie's brother, Wylie Carter, wife Beulah, and their only remaining grandparent Sarah Corbett Carter. Sallie appears in both households during the 1910 census of Echols and Lowndes Counties.

Their father remarried to Wealthy Louisa Herrin of Lake Park. The marriage was short lived as as Samuel passed away a little more than four years after Sallie had passed leaving Leo and Laura orphans. The date of Samuel's death is listed as November 16, 1913.

With daughter Laura already in good hands with the Wylie Carter family, son Leo was taken in by Martin T. Carter Jr. and raised on "Uncle Bucks" farm in Echols County, Georgia. Leo's son, Harry, stated that Martin T. Carter Jr. raised Leo to maturity.

The Carter and Crews families appear to be closely woven during the early 1900s. Leo's grandfather (Allen W.) Carter was a brother to Martin T. Carter Sr. Martin T. Carter Jr's eldest daughter Bula married Wiley Carter, son of Allen W. Carter and brother to his mother Sallie. Leo's sister Laura as well as Rachel Corbett were enumerated with the Wiley Carter family in the 1910 and 1920 census in Echols County.

Leo had not been enumerated in the states of Georgia or Florida in the 1920 census. Leo would be 17 at the time of the census and still living with the Carters in Echols. Leo is listed as a boarder in the 1930 census in Martin T Carter's household in the Wrights Chapel area of Echols County, GA. The farm was located off what is known today as Austin Road in western Echols County.

Leo married Teeny Elizabeth Melton, born 3 Aug 1907, the youngest of David Franklin Melton and Mary Louella Hines children, The couple wed 11 May 1932 in Jasper, Hamilton County, Florida. After Leo and Teeny's marriage, the couple lived briefly in Blount's Ferry, Florida (near the Georgia-Florida line). Sometime in 1933 the couple moved to Benton and started their family. They lived in a house on property owned by Teeny's father, Frank Melton. The couple had three boys:

1.Grady Eugene - b. Jun 8, 1933, m. Betty Jo Bush, d. May 2, 1966, d. May 2, 1966
2.Harry Lee - b. Aug 17, 1934, m. Gretchen Rebecca Van Duzer, d. Mar 9, 2004.
3.Charles Alvin - b. Sep 17, 1938, m. Gloria Ramona Smithy, d. Mar 20, 2004.

All three boys were born on the same property, in a different, newer, house in which their mother was born. The Crews were enumerated in the state of Florida census in 1935 in Benton. In 1938, the family rented a farm in the Needmore area and farmed there until they moved to another farm in Benton where the family is found during the 1940 census, living next door to Teeny's mother, Ella Melton and sister. Gertrude. This is likely the property Frank Melton acquired as a land grant from the Government and the boys Uncle Tommie acquired after his father's death. Uncle Tommie and his family lived on the other side of Ella and Gertrude. During 1940, Leo was doing roadwork on county roads, likely for the CCC. The family moved to the Fairview community in 1942. The family remained in Fairview until 1944.

Leo and family were enumerated in the state Florida census in the Bells Mill area (most likely Winfield) in 1945. He is listed as head of household, age 40, born in GA and his occupation is listed as Foreman. Leo worked as a foreman for the boys Uncle Bob (Robert Mallory Milton) at J.C. Marsh Turpentine Camp in Winfield. Also listed in the household is wife Teeny age 38, 10th grade education, born in Florida (Melton place in Benton), and sons Grady age 11, 6th grade, Harry Lee age 10, and Charles age 7, 2nd grade, sister-in-law Gertrude Melton, and mother-in-law Ella Melton.

Sometime during the late 1940s, the family moved back to Needmore.

The family is found, during the 1950 census, in Lake City. This could be the only home they ever purchased (1949 or before), This home is where the grandchildren would come and visit "grandpa and grandma". Leo was "riding the woods" in the turpentine business and Teeny worked at the school cafeteria along with sister Gertrude. The two oldest of their children attended school and had part-time jobs. Sixteen year old Grady worked on a laundry truck and Harry Lee, age 15, worked as a "soda jerk" at a local drug store. Charles was age 12. The two older boys worked over 20 hours a week.

Leo passed away May 21, 1962 at home, from a Cerebral Hemorrhage, and was buried in Memorial Cemetery in Lake City. Leo was 59 years young. A little over a year later, on July 9, 1963, Teeny passed away, age 55, at the Northeast Florida State Hospital in Macclenny, Florida, after a stroke, and is interred next to her husband in Memorial Cemetery.
