LOWNDES

William W. Dowling was born in Barnwell District, S.C., August, 1816 son of Dennis Dowling (Vol.I). He came to Georgia with his parents and grew up in Wayne and Lowndes Counties, and was married in Lowndes county Feb. 8, 1838, to Miss Ardelia E. Frier. She was born in 1825, daughter of Rev. Ryan Frier; and died Jan. 12, 1895. Born to them were ten children, viz:

3. Wm. H. Taylorb. Jan. 19, 1849, m. Georgia Hayes, dau. of Joseph.
4. Mary E.b. Apr. 28, 1851, m. Richard R. Black.
5. Jane Amandab. Jan. 10, 1854, m. J. M. Penny.
6. Julia A. Samantha b. May 10, 1857, m. James T. Fletcher.
7. James Dennisb. Sept.25, 1859, m. Mary E. Swilley.
8. Samuel Leonardb. Jan.30, 1862, m. Ist. Bertha Prevatt, dau. of P.L., of Fla.; 2nd. Malinda Corbitt, widow of C. W., Jr.

Mr. Dowling participated in the Indian War, and served three terms of enlistment. He was a private under Capt. Samuel E. Swilley, 2nd Regiment Florida militia, June 16th to Dec. 16th, 1837. Also served as a private in Capt. Wm. C. Newbern's company of Georgia militia, Oct. 25th, 1837, to Jan. 25, 1838. He served May to Sept. 1839, in the Florida militia. He lived in Lowndes County after his marriage until about 1853 when he moved to Florida and lived in Clay County until about 1862 when he moved back to Lowndes County, where he died Jan. 19, 1884. His widow died Jan. 12, 1895.

They were buried at New Bethel Baptist Church, Lowndes County; graves unmarked.
