General:
DOWLING, JABEZ L.Jabez L. Dowling was born in Barnwell District, S. C., in 1799, a son of Jabez Dowling (Vol. I). He came with his parents to McIntosh County in his youth, thence to Wayne County where he was married April, 1822, to Honor Eliza Davis, born 1807 in Georgia. They were married by Elder Maston Bates, according to the widow's pension application. Mr. and Mrs. Dowling had the following children:

Mr. Dowling was 1st Lieutenant in the Wayne County militia, 335th district, 18211823. Moving soon after marriage to Ware County he settled on a farm in the portion cut into Pierce in 1858, but which is now in Brantley County. He was Captain of the militia in the 590th district, Ware County, 1826-1829 and again 18341837. He fought in the Indian War of 1836-1839, and his widow drew a pension for his service. He died at his home in Pierce County, March 4, 1865.
Like his father, Capt. Dowling was also a school-teacher, and taught in the neighborhood schools several years.
He and his wife were members of High Bluff Primitive Baptist Church. She was received and baptized Nov. 9, 1828; the records do not show date and mode of his reception.

DOWLING, JABEZ L. (p.76): The family Bible record of this old pioneer has been located since Vol. III was published. It shows that he was born March 13, 1800, and that his wife was born May 18, 1807, and that they were married April 14, 1822. DOWLING, JOHN D.1831-1912 BRANTLEY
John Darling Dowling was born in Ware County, March 12, 1831, son of Darling Dowling (Vol.III). He grew up and lived in the vicinity of High Bluff Church in Ware County (portion made into Pierce County, 1858, and into Brantley, 1924). Leaving home after his father's death in 1851, he went to Florida and lived there until his death. He was married Feb. 22, 1855, in Columbia County, to Sarah Johns, daughter of Riley Johns (Vol.III). She was born in Camden (now Charlton) County, Ga., Dec. 17, 1839. The two families of Dowling and Johns were cut into New River County when it was made about 1858, and soon after into Baker County, and lived on farms near Sanderson.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Dowling were seven children:

Mr. Dowling served as a private in Co. "F", 8th Florida Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., enlisting at Sanderson, in May, 1862. He was captured at Gettysburg and kept in Fort Delaware and Fort Lookout Prisons until the end of the war. He returned home and farmed there until his death Sept. 17, 1912. His wife died Nov. 27, 1915. They were buried in North Prong Cemetery, Baker County.
