HINES, JAMES1750-1799 EFFINGHAM

James Hines of Effingham County was a Revolutionary Soldier in North Carolina and moved with his family to Effingham Co., Ga., after the Revolution and before 1790. He was a son of David Hines, R.S., and wife Nancy; they also moved to Effingham County and he, David, was born c1725 and died in Effingham County in 1793, intestate. David and son James lived in Pitt Co., N.C., before moving to Georgia. The wife of James Hines was Drucilla Lewis, born in Virginia c1753, daughter of Samuel Lewis. She died in Effingham County, about 1814. Mr. and Mrs. Hines had ten children. In the following list of the children all birth years are approximate except the last two, William and Lewis, in which instances the year-dates of birth are based on the 1850 census:

James Hines became a very influential citizen in Effingham County, as did some of his sons. The family appeared to have been moderately wealthy for their day. James Hines was a private in the North Carolina militia in the Revolutionary War (see p. 407, "Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution"). He died at his home in Effingham County, Nov. 28, 1799. His will dated the day of his death, named his wife Drusilla, son Charlton Hines and son-in-law Elijah Lewis as executors (see Georgia Genealogical Magazine, p. 1724, for abstract of will). After their mother's death the above children joined in a deed disposing of her estate.

The son Charlton Hines and daughters Sarah and Drusilla all lived and died in Liberty County. Lewis Hines died in Bryan County in 1840, and seemed to have been the wealthiest one of the children, leaving an estate appraised in Liberty Co., at $42,890.50. He owned 117 slaves at his death. Lewis lived many years in Bryan County and was a Justice of Bryan Inferior Court, 1826 until his death. The son, William Hines, moved to Lowndes County where he was a prominent citizen and county officer. He had a son, Thomas Hughes Hines, who became a successful lawyer, first at old Troupville (the ante-bellum county-site of Lowndes County) and later in Baker County, Florida, where he married a daughter of Abner W. Sweat (Vol. V). His father, William, moved about 1857-8 to Hamilton County, Florida. The well known Georgia banker, Mills B. Lane, is a descendant of William Hines through his daughter Sarah who married Mills M. Brinson (Vol. V).
