James Bryant Lewis was born in North Carolina, March 23, 1812, son of Jesse Lewis (Vol. II). He was married in 1838 to Letitia McCool, born in Wayne County, Oct. 2, 1822, daughter of William McCool and his wife Lucretia Highsmith. They had the following children, viz:

I. Charles H.b. 1839, m. Nancy Kelly, dau. of Geo., Oct. 17, 1865.
2. Matildab. 1842, m. Gillis Rodgers, Dec. 28, 1859.
3. John b. 1845, never m. Was killed in C. S. Army.
4. James B.b. 1847, m. (unknown).
5. Lucretiab. 1848, m. (unknown)
6. Marthab. 1850, m. William F. Raybon.
7. Louisab. 1851, m. Benjamin Walden, Jan. 16, 1868.
8. Robertb. 185-, m. Mary Johns.
9. Millard F.b. 1854, m. Sarah Dixon.

Mr. Lewis was lst Lieutenant, Wayne County militia, 335th district, 1831-36; and Captain in same district, 1836-39. He was a private in Capt. James Jones' militia company in 1840, in the Indian War. He served as Sheriff of Wayne County, 1836-1838, Justice of Wayne Inferior Court, 1839-1841 and again 1849 until his death, April 12, 1862. He also held the office of Tax-Collector, 1840-41.

Mrs. Lewis survived him fourteen years, and continued to keep the home together and rear the children. She died Dec. 11, 1876. She and her husband were buried in the Lewis Cemetery near Nahunta. Their home was in the portion of Wayne County made into Brantley County in 1924.
