HUTTO, HENRY
1753-1817
BARNWELL CO., South Carolina

Henry Hutto, the Revolutionary ancestor of a number of Wiregrass Georgians, was a life-long resident of South Carolina. He was born in Orangeburg District, South Carolina, May 26, 1753, a son of Charles and Ann Hutto, members of the Dutch-German colony of Orangeburg District. Isaac Hutto, the grandfather of the subject, was born in Germany in 1695 and emigrated to South Carolina about 1735. In 1786, Winton County was formed out of Orangeburg, and Henry Hutto became a resident of the new county, having been cut into it. Winton County two years later was re-named Barnwell District (or County). The section which Henry Hutto lived in is now Bamberg County.

Henry Hutto married Miss Ann Zorn about 1780, daughter of Henry Zorn, R.S., of Barnwell County. To Henry and Ann were born ten children (order of birth not known except that Rebecca was the youngest):

Mr. Hutto served in the Revolutionary War, first enlisting November 4, 1775, in the 1st. South Carolina Regiment under Col. Charles Pinckney. This command was mustered into the Contiental establishment and he servcd as a private until March 7, 1778, when he was promoted to corporal. He was honorably discharged August 10, 1778. In 1779 he served another enlistment in Capt. Oliver Towies' company, with rank of corporal. He served 1780 and 1781.

Henry Hutto died testate in Barnwell District, in 1817. His will dated August 27, 1817, was probated October 24, 1817. His wife and son, William, were named executors. The wife was given the estate until her death. She died 1831, and the estate was then sold and divided into ten parts. The estate owned sixteen slaves in 1831. The inventory of the estate in January 1818 totaled $8956.75.

Mrs. Ann Hutto, mother of Henry Hutto, the subject, was a widow during the Revolutionary War, and furnished supplies to the Revolutionary cause on several occasions. Mrs. Lydia Kirkland Moseley became the first descendant to be admitted into the D.A.R. on the patriotic service of Mrs. Ann Hutto; she was admitted October 24, 1951, National No. 402731; she is a member of John Floyd Chapter, D.A.R., Homerville, Georgia.

She was admitted October 24, 1951; National No. 402731, member of John Floyd Chapter, aforesaid. Mrs. Heath and Mrs. Moseley are great-granddaughters of James Touchston and his wife Rebecca HuttoTouchston. Mrs. Sarah Delk Hutto, widow of Isaac (son of Henry and Ann), later married William ^Touchton^, and moved to Lowndes County, later to Clinch. Rev. Isaac D. Hutto and Nancy, who married William Hughes (q.v.), were the children of said Isaac and Sarah, and lived in Clinch County.

HUTTO, ISAAC.
1795-1827
BARNWELL DIST., S. C.

Mrs. Hutto married William Touchston in 1828, and they moved to Lowndes County, Georgia, in 1833 along with the families of Jacob Hughes and William Hughes and others moving at that time. The Barnwell County estate records show that Mrs. Sarah Touchston petitioned the Ordinary of Barnwell District on Jan. 12, 1832, stating that she was the widow of Isaac Hutto, and that her fouryear-old son, Isaac, was entitled to a distributive share of the estate of his grandfather, Henry Hutto, deceased, and she asks that her brother-in-law, William Hutto, be appointed Isaac's guardian. On the same date, she filed a similar petition for her daughter, Ann (who gradually came to be called "Nancy" in later years). William Hutto was appointed guardian for the two children.

Mrs. Sarah Hutto-Touchston had four children by her second husband, William Touchston; they lived first in Lowndes County but later moved to Clinch County where the children were reared and lived. Isaac D. Hutto, named above, came with his mother and stepfather to Georgia and married in Lowndes (now Lanier) County, afterwards moving to Clinch County, where he became a well-known and greatly beloved Primitive Baptist minister.
