When Clinch County was formed in 1850 out of Ware, Mr. O'Steen and family were cut into the new county. He owned several lots of land with farms on them; these lands were located in the northwest portion of the county. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Representative in 1858.
When the call for more troops went out early in 1862, and the 50th Georgia Volunteer Regiment was being formed out of companies over Wiregrass Georgia, Mr. O'Steen raised a company in Clinch County, and he was elected its Captain. This company, designated as Co. "G", was mustered in March 4, 1862, at Homerville. He was wounded in the battle of Boonesboro, Md., Sept. 14, 1862, and died of his wounds the 23rd of the same month.
In the militia organization which was revived with the advent of the war, Mr. O'Steen was elected 2nd Lieutenant of the 1224th (Homerville) district and commissioned July 2, 1861, and on Aug. 10, 1861, became captain of the company. This service was terminated when he raised the company for Confederate Army service a few months later.
Mrs. O'Steen reared the children to maturity. She died Sept. 23, 1885, and was buried at Bethany Church, Clinch County. She and D. J. Sirmans, a neighbor, were appointed administrators of the estate. Capt. and Mrs. O'Steen were members of Bethany Primitive Baptist Church.
Capt. O'Steen was a half brother of Edmund Stafford (Vol. III), and of Vicy, wife of R. G. Dickerson (Vol. II).
