TERRELL, John1790-1870 Echols
John Terrell was born in Robeson County, North Carolina, in 1790, a son of Philemon and Elizabeth Terrell. He moved with his parents to Georgia and grew up in Liberty County where he married December 3, 1815, to Miss Lydia Ellis. After her death he married Miss Nancy Overstreet in Irwin County, August 16, 1827. By the two marriages Mr. Terrell had the following children:

4. David W.b. 1830, died single in C. S. Army.

7. Mariahb. 1836, m. James Setliff Swilley.
8. Lucy Janeb. 1837, m. John H. Carter.
9. Calvin Swilleyb. 1838, never m. Died age about 25.
10. Rachel M.b. 1842, m. (1) Frank Colson (2) Jim Lige Carter.
Record is found where John Terrell granted land in Liberty County, 100 acres on Doctor's Creek being surveyed for him January 14, 1815, and 200 acres on June 25, 1816. He sold out and moved to Irwin County about 1825, and about ten years later moved to what was then Lowndes County. In 1858, he was cut out of Lowndes into Echols County when the latter was created, and he lived in Echols until his death about 1870. He was buried in the Carter Graveyard in Echols County.
John Terrell served in the Indian War in 1838 in Capt. David R. Bryan's company of Lowndes County militia. He and his wife were members of Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in Echols County.
David W. Terrell, the son named above, was a Confederate casualty. He enlisted in Co. "I", 12th Georgia Vol. Inf. Regiment, June 14, 1861, at Valdosta. He was wounded at Gambrier, Virginia, and died of his wounds. He was a charter member of Alapaha Lodge No. 209, F. & A.M. at Statenville, and died a member while in the service.
Pholemon Terrell, father of the subject, moved to Liberty County before 1800, and died there in 1816. The heirs of Philemon Terrell, including John, made a deed to their mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Terrell, December 9, 1816, for four tracts of land totaling 650 acres in Liberty County owned by the elder Terrell at his death, (Deed Book "11", page 107, Liberty County).
