ECHOLS

Jesse Pleasant Prescott, the first Clerk of Echols Superior Court, was born in Appling County, Nov. 8, 1821, a son of Moses Prescott (Vol. 1). He came with his parents to Lowndes (now Echols) County in 1832, and was married there August 30, 1840, to Miss Sarah Brooks, born Aug. 16, 1818, in Barnwell District, S. C. She died Feb. 15, 1889. Her father died there when she was sir months old, and her mother then married Isham Clayton and they removed to Lowndes County and settled near Ocean Pond where she grew up and married. To her and Mr. Prescott were born five children, viz:

1. Elijah J. W.b. June 14, 1841, m. Nannie Smith, dau. of Britton.
2. Hiram Duncanb. Mar. 17, 1845, m. Julia King of Columbia Co.,Florida.
3. Thomas Moses b. Mar. 17, 1843, m. Sarah Boring, dau. of Joseph.
4. Amanda Malissle b. Aug. 30, 1847, never m. Died Feb. 25, 1923.
5. William Echols b. Oct. 7, 1859, m. 1st. Julia Mercer; 2nd. Julia Strickland.

Mr. Prescott lived in Hamilton County, Fla., about 1845-49, but removed back to his former home community, and the next year, 1850, was cut into the new County of Clinch out of Lowndes. In 1858, he was again placed in a new county when Echols was made out of Clinch. After retiring from public life, Mr. Prescott removed to Lake Park, Lowndes County, where he lived until his death Dec. 23, 1903.

J. P, Prescott served in Capt, David R, Bryan's company of Lowndes County militia in the Indian War, as 3rd Sergeant, in 1838, also served other periods of enlistment. In his later years he was very active in helping secure government pensions for the survivors of the Indian War under an Act of Congress passed about 1892.

Mr. Prescott served as Justice of Peace in the 1058th district of Clinch County (now Echols), 1850-1857, and as Tar-Collector of Clinch County 1857-58. He was Clerk of Superior and Inferior Courts of Echols County, 1859-1868, and Clerk of the Superior Court again in 1875-77 and 1883-1891. He served as Representative from his county in 1878-1879. He was Chairman of the Democratic Erecutive Committee in his county at different intervals. He was the first Postmaster at "Troublesome" (original name of Statenville), when the office was established in October, 1851, serving until the town site of Statenville was laid out after the creation of Echols County and his election as Clerk of Court. He was the first settler of Statenville, having removed to the present town-site long before a new county or a new town there was thought of; the name "Troublesome" referred to the trouble the settlers had crossing the deep creek of that name, with its precipitous banks, which emptied into nearby Alapaha River. The Prescott home and plantation became a part of the village of Statenville in 1858.

Mr. Prescott and his first wife were charter members of the Statenville Baptist Church when it was organized about 1857, and continued members until their deaths. He was also a charter member of Alapaha Lodge, No. 209, F. & A. M., at Statenville (or "Troublesome") in 1857, serving as its first Secretary and continuing in that capacity until 1865; then again serving 1868-1870, 1872-1875 and at other intervals. His second marriage was on Aug. 14, 1893, at Lake Park when he married Mrs. Elizabeth D. Cor, widow of Dr. J. J. Cor of that town. She survived him; there was no issue by her.

Mr. Prescott and his first wife were buried in the town cemetery in Statenville. He left a will dated April 30, 1897, which named a friend, James T. Corbitt, as erecutor.

Census Refs: 1840, Lowndes; 1850, Clinch; 1860, 1870, Echols.
