My Mama
This grand lady in the top picture was 90 yrs old when it was taken. No make up, just a little face powder and a touch of Rouge, as she called it, and a dab of lipstick. I always did her hair.
Cuba Carter was born July 15, 1908 in Echols County, Georgia. Her parents were Hansford Franklin"Moss" Carter and Zoia Amelia Porter Carter. She was one of five children.
She graduated from Lake Park High School and went to Valdosta State University and received her teaching certificate. However, public teaching was not to be. She married on November 10, 1928 to Louis Byrd Wisenbaker.
They had a family of seven children. They lived in Lake Park, Georgia when the older five children were born. One of these children, Donald Frederick Wisenbaker, died at the age of six days.
Daddy and Mama bought a farm in 1938 in the western portion of Lowndes County in the Ousley District. The farm had an old house with no electricity and an outdoor toilet. The last two of their children were born in this house and it still stands today. It was upgraded to have all the conveniences of modern houses. It just looked old.
Mama gathered food from the garden and prepared delicious meals on an old wood stove for many years. She was an excellent seamstress. She made all the boys shirts as well as the girls clothes. She also made clothes for her niece and the neighbors children. Nothing went to waste in those days. All the fabric scraps were saved and she made scrap quilts to cover us with in the cold winter. Even in later years, the love of piecing quilts was not gone. She bought material and cut it up and made beautiful quilts from it. She had an article published in Quilt World Magazine 1977 with the pattern of a quilt square her Great Grandmother made.
She loved flowers, especially dayliies, amaryllis, and iris and had many growing in her yard. In summer the front porch would be lined with her potted plants. She definitely had a green thumb
She had good mental faculities until the last year of her life. She lived alone at the age of 94 and then moved in with us for the last 1 1/2 yrs of her life. She had developed some hallucination problems due to a calcified brain tumor.
She died May 4, 2004 in the Brooks County Hospital, Quitman, Georgia. She was survived by five of her children.
She was preceded in death by husband Louis Byrd Wisenbaker, sons Donald Frederick Wisenbaker and Ivy Wesley Wisenbaker, Grandsons, Alton Leon Wisenbaker and John Wesley Wisenbaker, step Grandson Jerrold David Roark.
She was buried at Dasher Cemetery, Lowndes County, Georgia USA next to her husband Louis Wisenbaker

Dale 3 Carter (Thomas, 2 Thomas 1 ) lived on a plan-
tation in Christ Church parish near the home of Col. James
Gordon. Bishop Meade says he was a vestryman at old Christ
Church, and Col. Gordon says that Mr. Waddell in 1763 pro-
posed him as one of the Elders in the Presbyterian Church so
that he must have left the church of his fathers under the
preaching of Mr. Waddel. "Dale Carter, Gent." was a mem-
ber of the county court in 1763, '64, '65, & '66; and in 1774
and 1776 he was a member of the Committee of Safety for
Lancaster county. Col. Gordon mentions him as follows:
June 9, 1758. "This day my daughter Anne was married
to Mr. Rich d Chichester about 11 o'clock forenoon; had a
very agreable company, viz.: Col. Conway, Mrs. C. and her
children, Col. Tayloe, Dr. Robertson, & his wife, Mrs. Chinn,
Mr. Armistead, Mr. Dale Carter & his wife, Mrs. Doggett &
Sally, Bridger Haynie, Col. Seldon & Miss Betty Seldon,
Richd. Spann, and Robt. Henning. ,,
Oct. 14, 1761. "Went with Col. Tayloe and Mr. Dale Car-
ter to Mr. Chichester to get his English papers ready to send
to Wmrg. to have the Governor's certificate & seal of the
Colony."
Jan. 6, 1762. "Mrs. Conway and her children, Col. Tayloe,
and Dale Carter at dinner. Stayed all night."
March 24, 1762. "This night Sallie Carter died - Dale's
daughter."
Feb. 16, 1763. "Mr. Dale Carter came to let us know that
Mrs. Edwards has cleared up Sally Dogget's character by
oath."
Oct. 5, 1763. "Went with my wife to see Mr. Dale Car-
ter found him very ill. My wife carried him something and
he was better in the evening."
Oct. 6. "Mr. Dale Carter's negro came to tell us his
master is very ill all night. My wife rose very early and went
to see him. We called there as we went to Col. Conway's
funeral and found him better."
Dale Carter was not married in 1728 when his father made
his will ; but seems to have been married twice - the second
wife being a Mrs. Elizabeth Stradford, who had a son Peter
Stradford.
Dec. 11, 1776. "Dale Carter Gent" of Christ Church
parish made his will, probated on the 19th. of the same month.
He left to his wife all the estate she brought with her and
that he had paid for Peter Stradford in lieu of her dower.
He left the home plantation to son James, who was living in
181 1 ; daughter Anne negroes Mary and Spencer; son John £5
cash and he and daughter Anne to have the right to live at the
home place. Rest of estate equally to all children. This will
bears a seal showing a bird similar to the Dale seal used by
Thomas Carter in 1700.
Dale Carter has issue as follows:
79. Rev. Jesse Carter, died after 1789.
80. Jeduthun.
81. Augustine, b. Oct. 23, 1741, died in 181 1.
82. William, died 1790.
