General:
STAFFORD, Robert1765-1829 Wayne Robert Stafford, a Revolutionary soldier of South Carolina, was an early settler of Wayne County, Georgia. He was born in South Carolina about 1765, and was a son of Joshua Stafford, R.S. The elder Stafford and his family moved to Effingham County, Georgia from Barnwell County, South Carolina in 1790, later being cut into Screven County when that county was created, 1793. Robert Stafford married Jane Blair, daughter of William and Sibbiah (Earl) Blair of Effingham County. Mrs. Sibbiah Blair rendered valuable services to the Revolutionary cause for which reason her descendants are eligible to membership in the D.A.R. (see Mrs. Margaret Davis Cate, a descendant, N.S., D.A.R., No 270594). To Robert and Jane Stafford were born the following children:

Robert Stafford was County Surveyor of Effingham County in 1793 and of Screven County in 1794. He was a Justice of Peace in Screven County for several years. He was one of the Justices of the Inferior Court of Wayne County, 1818-1820, having moved to Wayne in 1810.
He was the owner of several large tracts of land in Screven County which he granted from the State, and in Wayne County had a large plantation. He died in 1829 leaving a will dated February 1, 1829, probated May Term, 1829, Wayne Court of Ordinary.
Robert Stafford was one of the two executors of the will of his father, Joshua Stafford, in Screven County in 1795.
In the Revolutionary War he was a private in the South Carolina Militia, 1781, also furnished supplies.

Robert STAFFORD was born in 1755 in Beaufort Co., North Carolina. Another source has is birth abt 1765 in South Carolina. He died in 1829 in Wayne Co., Georgia. He signed a will on 1 FEB 1829 in Wayne Co., Georgia. His Will Proved in MAY 1829 in Wayne Co, Georgia. Robert was a County Surveyor in Effinham County in 1793 and of Screven Co., in 1794. He was a Justice of the Peace in Screven Co., for several years. He was a Justice of the Inferior Court of Wayne Co., 1818-1820 having moved to Wayne Co.l, in 1810. He was the owner of several large tracts of land in Screven County and in Wayne Co., had a large plantation. According to his tombstone, he was a private in the SC Militia during the Revolutionary War. He was married to Jane BLAIR on 26 JUN 1795 in Effingham Co., Georgia. Click.

Around 179?, Robert Stafford married Jane Blair, daughter of William Blair of northern Ireland and his wife, Sibbiah Earl Blair. Records indicate that Robert and Jane relocated from Effingham County, Georgia to Glynn/Wayne County around 1810. In a letter dated June 23, 1939, Margaret Cate said, "He lived and died on the old Post Road at Tuckerville, the first county seat of Wayne County."

William Blair was County Surveyor in Burke County, GA. He was a Rev.War Soldier, serving under Col. Francis Pugh. He died during the latter part of the war, probably from exposure or other hardship and suffering caused by his war service. Bounty land was granted February10, 1784 to his heirs by the state of Georgia. Mrs. Sibbiah Blair furnished supplies to the Revolutionary cause, and her descendants are eligible for membership in the D.A.R. through her service. Mrs.Margaret Davis Cate, well known historian of Coastal Georgia, is a descendant and member on Sibbiah Blair's contribution to the war. Mrs.Cates's DAR Nat. No. is 270594,

WILL OF ROBERT STAFFORD
In the name of God, Amen. I Robert Stafford, citizen of the
County of Wayne and State of Georgia, being of Sound mind and
memory, do hereby make this my last Will and Testament after re-
signing my soul to the Creator and my body to be interred. I do
therefore bequeath my property in the following manner and to be
distributed by my executors herein after named.
That is to say:
Item 1st. I give and bequeath unto my dearly beloved wife
Jane Stafford one Negro man named Ruby and one Negro woman named
Silvia also my stock of cattle in my own mark, one bed and furni-
ture, all my household and kitchen furniture to be left at her
discretion for her disposal as she my think proper.
Item 2nd. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Sibbiah Oneal
one Negro woman named Drissy and her child Glory and the children
which Drissy may here after have.
Item 3rd. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Martha
Wiggins one Negro woman named Judy and her child Peggy. Now if
the said Martha dies without lawful issue of her body born after
this date then the said Negroes are to be divided between my law-
ful heirs.
Item 4th. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Mc-
Donald one Negro girl named Lucinda.
Item 5th. I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Stafford
one Negro woman named Peggy and her child Elenor. Also one bed
and furniture attached to it.
Item 6th. I give and bequeath unto my son James Stafford
one Negro boy named Peter and one Negro girl named Abigail and one
bed and furniture attached to it.
Item 7th. I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Jane
Amanda Hatcher one Negro girl named Hester and all her Mother's
stock of Cattle and the said Negro girl to remain with My Dearly
Beloved Jane Stafford untill the said Jane Amanda Hatcher becomes
of age and also if the said Jane A. Hatcher dies without lawful
heirs of her body, the said Negro girl Hester and the Stock of
Cattle are to be divided between my heirs which are living.
Item 8th. And Lastly it is my desire that my land lying on
the Post Road near the Buffalo in Wayne County and State of
Georgia shall be sold by my Executors to pay my just debts which
may be against me and further preserve a lot regularly. "Dwain"
County lot as ll in the 11th Distrect near Lorends Fort for the
use of My Beloved Wife Jane Stafford and Robert Stafford and
James Stafford to be disposed of as they may think proper.
And further I do hereby appoint My Dearly beloved said Jane
Stafford Executor and Robert Stafford and James Stafford my law-
ful executors of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revokeing
all former wills or Codicils to wills, Henceforth by me made in
writing.

the time - was to the best of this deponents knowledge & belief

STAFFORD, ROBERT, JR.1808-1863 WAYNE
Robert Stafford, Jr., son of Robert Stafford, R.S. (Vol. 1), was born in Screven County March 31st, 1808 and died at his home on his plantation known as Whitaker in Wayne County September 29, 1863. He was brought as a small child to Wayne County by his parents when they moved there, and continued to live there until his death.
Mr. Stafford was married twice. His first wife was Martha Ann Ratcliff, daughter of James Ratcliff of Glynn County (Vol 1). They were married December 24, 1830. By her fourteen children were born. The second wife was Miss Smithey Ann Haile of Leon County, Florida, where they were married June 1st, 1854. By her one son was born, Peter Stafford. The first wife was born September 20, 1812 in Glynn County, and died December 25, 1850. She was buried at Waynesville. The fifteen children were:

Mr. Stafford was Captain of the militia in the 334th district, Wayne county, 1828-1831. He served as Justice of Wayne Inferior Court, 1840-1845 and 1849-1854. His home place plantation was located on the old post road from Fort Barrington. This road formed the county line between Wayne and Glynn counties. He lived in comfortable circumstances and was a prominent citizen of his county in his day.
