RICE, John
1783-1855
CLINCH

JOHN RICE was born March 20, 1783 in Barnwell District, South Carolina, a son of Aaron Rice, R.S. He married Ann Guest, born 1783, daughter of John Guest of Barnwell District, about 1804, and had the following children:

1. Elizabethb. 1805, m. Samuel Rentz
2. Christinab 1808 m. Jacob Lightsey.
3. Mehalab. 1811, m. Malachi Monk.
4. Rachelb. 1816, m. William Howell.
5. John Guestb. 1821, m. Ellen Sellars.
6. Sarahb. 1823, m. James O'Kane.

These children all moved to Georgia with their parents in 1833 though some were married at the time. Mrs. Rice and her daughters, Mehala and Rachel and Mrs. Rentz all united with Union Church, May, 1833, by letter from Springtown Baptist Church, Barnwell District, South Carolina. Mrs. Rice died a member. Mr. Rice was baptized into Union Church on a profession of faith, November 7, 1840; was expelled October 8, 1842; restored October 7, 1854 and expelled again February 10, 1855.

When the Rice family moved to Georgia they located and lived the first few years in the 719th district of Ware County and in the territory now in Clinch County. The 719th district is now wholly in Echols County but in those days embraced the southern half of present Clinch County, as well as most of present Echols. The Rice home was on Suwannoochee Creek, near the present town of DuPont. He died there.in 1855. After his death, Mrs. Rice made her home with her children. She died 1863 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rentz, in Echols County.

Mr. Rice served as a private in Capt. Jesse Carter's company of Lowndes County militia in 1838 in the Indian War.

Note: Mrs. Rice's name appears in later records as "Nancy" instead of "Ann" the former being a derivative of the latter.

Census References: 1810, Barnwell Co., South Carolina; 1840, 1850, Ware; 1860, widow appears both in Echols with Samuel Rentz and family and in Clinch with her son, J. G. Rice.

RICE, JOHN GUESS
1821-1863
Clinch

John Guess Rice, named for his maternal grandfather, John Guess (q.v.), was born in 1821 in Barnwell District, South Carolina a son of John and Ann (or Nancy) Rice (Vol. 1). He came to Wiregrass Georgia with his parents in boyhood, and lived in what is now Clinch County until his death in 1863. He married Ellen Sellars, daughter of Thomas Darley Sellars. She was born in Barnwell District, South Carolina November 24, 1830. To Mr. and Mrs. Rice were born:

1. Aaronb. 1846, m. Hannah Lightsey, daughter of Samuel.
2. Phoebeb. 1848, m. James H. Hughes.
3. William Darleyb. 1850, m. (unknown). Lived at Dade City, Florida
4. Janeb: 1852, m. F. M. Hughes.
5. Artemusb. 1856, m. (1) Frances Hughes (2) Keziah Brown.
6. Lucretiab. 1859, m. John Jasper Hughes.
7. Quartermanb. 1860, died age about 14 years.
8. D. Lottb. 1863, m. Harriet Griffis, daughter of Joel.

After marriage, Mr. Rice settled on lot of land 571, 12th district, then Ware County (cut into Clinch County, 1850). He granted this lot from the State May 5, 1848. He lived there until 1862. The Atlantic & Gulf Railroad was being built through his lands on the adjoining lot and he did not like living near a railroad. He sold out and moved about seven miles north where he acquired land on Devil's Bay, built his home but died soon afterwards, age about 42 years. He was a blacksmith in the Confederate Army but was released to return home, the rules recognizing blacksmiths as a community necessity.
Mrs. Rice, the widow, was married in later years to William Hughes, and they were both murdered and robbed by Negroes November 6, 1888 (See William Hughes sketch, this volume). She was baptized into Prospect Primitive Baptist Church October 6, 1865 but was dismissed with her husband, William Hughes, May 9, 1885 and united with Olive Leaf Church near their home.
