General:
COPELAND, LottLOTT COPELAND was born in Chatham County, North Carolina, in 1785, oldest child of Aaron Copeland, R. S., and his wife Pollie Melton Copeland. The elder Copeland served in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War, and in 1787 moved to Orangeburg District, South Carolina, north part, where Lott grew to maturity. The elder Copeland later moved to Chesterfield County, South Carolina, where he died May 9, 1832. Lott Copeland lived for some years in South Orangeburg, now Barnwell County, before moving to Lowndes County, Georgia, in 1843.

Mr. Copeland was married twice. His first wife was Elender Rice, born July 16, 1789, daughter of Aaron Rice, R.S., of Barnwell County. She died in 1822, and about two years later Mr. Copeland married Miss Susan Whetstone, born 1804 in Orangeburg District, north part, daughter of Henry Whetstone, R. S. Seventeen children were born by the two marriages:

Edward Copeland enlisted in Company "I", 12th Georgia Regiment, C.S.A., at Valdosta June 14, 1861, and was mortally wounded at McDowell, Virginia.
Lott Copeland served in the War of 1812 as a corporal in Capt. Josiah Walker's Company of South Carolina Militia. He lived in Lowndes County from 1843 until 1858 when he was cut into Echols County when it was formed out of Lowndes. He lived in Echols until his death about 1870.
