Banner Thomas was in the Indian War, serving as a private in Capt. David J. Miller's company of Ware county militia in 1838, and in 1840 in Capt. Jones' company of Ware County militia. He served as a Justice of Ware Inferior Court, 18451849, and as Justice of the Peace in the 590th district of Ware county, 1857 until he was cut into Pierce County out of Ware in its creation in 1858. He then was elected Justice of Peace of the newly-formed 1181st district of Pierce county, serving 1858-1860, and again 1869-1870 (resigned).
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas were members of nearby High Bluff Primitive Baptist Church. He was received and baptized May 8, 1847, and she on Jan. 7, 1843. He later joined the Masonic order and received his degrees in Waresboro Lodge No. 217. On March 5, 1869, he affiliated with Blackshear Lodge, but on Nov. 4, 1870, he was demitted at his request, and apparently never again affiliated with a lodge on account of the attitude of his church towards Masonry.
Mrs. Thomas died in July, 1869, and he died in 1875. His son, Wm. G. Thomas, was the administrator of his estate. The homeplace of Banner Thomas was on lot of land 37, 9th district of Pierce county, which he owned at his death, and which was and is located about five miles east of Waycross, the railroad to Brunswick running through the lot. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas were buried at High Bluff Church.

Notes
General:
Banner Thomas, forefather of most of the name in Ware and Pierce Counties, was born in South Carolina during 1785, possibly Beaufort County. His wife, Mary, was daughter of Redden Mixon and Amelia (last name unknown) was born in Georgia during 1793. Banner is the son of James Thomas and Sarah Banner.
The marriage of Banner took place in Liberty County after James and Sarah moved the family from South Carolina. Their marriage bonds were never recorded, as required by law, and the original books have been removed from the Ordinary's office. However, the books found their way into a descendant's hands. Banner Thomas' bond was dated July 11, 1808 and signed by Banner and Redden Mixon, his future father-in-law, as bondsman.
The family moved to Georgia before 1790 but where they first lived in this state has not been ascertained. Banner Thomas and wife Mary had five sons and five daughters in the 1830 census; all these are known except for one daughter. They had ten known children
Banner Thomas and family lived for several years in Liberty and McIntosh counties. He and his wife united with Jones Creek Baptist Church in Liberty (now Long) County, in April, 1823, and were baptized, according to the church records; they were later dismissed by letter, and received by letter into High Bluff Primitive Baptist Church (now in Brantley County), he being received Jan. 7, 1832, and she on June 9, 1832. They died members and were buried in the cemetery there.
The 1820 census shows Banner Thomas and family living in McIntosh County, but he registered in 1825 for the 1827 Land Lottery as a resident of Liberty County, 16th district. Together with his brothers, Lewis and James R. Thomas, and others of the family connection including the Waldrons, they moved from Liberty County to Ware County about 1829-1830, and settled in the 9th land district. Banner Thomas lived there until his death about 1865. He cut out of Ware into Pierce County in 1858.
Mr. Thomas served for several years beginning in 1839 as Captain of the militia in the 590th militia district, Ware County, and was generally called "Capt. Thomas" from this circumstance. He served as a Justice of Ware Inferior Court, 1837-1845."
"He served as a private in the War of 1812 in Capt. Thomas King Gould's company of Georgia militia. He enlisted at Darien, Jan. 12, 1815, and was mustered out Feb. 28, 1815, the war having ended. He was granted bounty-land for this service. (2) Mrs. Thomas was Mary Mixon before marriage and was a sister of Elizabeth, the wife of his brother Lewis Thomas... (4) Capt. Banner Thomas was a son of James and Sarah (Banner) Thomas who lived in the Barnwell District, S.C., before moving to Georgia..."
Banner was also a judge.

Edmund Thomas' Sacrifice
Georgia Day is near and I recall the story of a Confederate soldier, Edmund Thomas, whose love for our state still lives in the hearts of all races in the mystical, magical land. He was a native of McIntosh County who eventually settled in Pierce County (now Brantley County) where he became a prosperous farmer, but chose not to own slaves.
Edmund was Pierce County's first tax collector from 1858-59, and crossed the Satilla River on a ferry to reach Blackshear, the county seat. In 1861 he was a first lieutenant The Farmer's Guard and in 1862 at the age of 37 he joined Company A of the 50th Georgia Regiment. His wife, Martha Dowling Thomas, gave birth to their eighth and last child. They had five daughters and three sons. The Confederates had advanced up a few states when Sgt. Thomas was capturedby Union soldiers. He died during captivity on September 25,1862.
Whenever I, his great-greatgrandaughter, hear "Dixie," I think of men like Edmund Thomas who hated no one, but evidently defended the South because Georgia was in danger of invasion. The Words of our Lord Jesus are remembered "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for a friend."
This comes from the book : The Story of Brantley County, Georgia.

#673 Edmund Thomas
Edmund Thomas, son of Judge Banner Thomas and Mary Mixon Thomas, was born in McIntosh County, Georgia in 1825 and moved with his family when he was a toddler to land that is now Blackshear, Georgia. The family later lived in Schlatterville, and he married Martha Dowling.
The couple settled on a farm between Hickox and Hoboken where their eight children were born.Among his offspring was Banner Thomas who was born on February 9, 1857.
Edmund was the first tax collector of Pierce County, and he later joined the Confederacy during The War Between the States. The Satilla Ranger was captured in 1862 and died a few weeks later in a Maryland hospital. His forefather was James Thomas, Veteran of The American Revolution, and he was a pioneer of Ware(now Pierce) County.
If you inspect the historical marker in front of the courthouse (in Blackshear) you will find two Thomas names Edmund Thomas , son of Banner, was the first Tax collector, and James Thomas, younger brother of Banner, was the first Coroner.
