BLACKBURN, MARTIN E. L.Martin Ebenezer Licurgis Blackburn was born in 1825 in Bulloch County, a son of Daniel J. Blackburn (see Vol. 1). He was brought to Ware County by his parents when he was about two years old, and grew up there and lived the remainder of his life in that county. He was married in 1848 to Miss Mary Ann Cason, born August 7, 1826 in Ware County, died February 9, 1900. She was a daughter of Frederick Cason, an early settler of Ware and one of the first Justices of the Inferior Court of the parent county of Appling. To Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn were born:

Mr. Blackburn after marriage settled on a tract of land a few miles south of where Waycross now is, and engaged in farming. When the Civil War came on he volunteered in Co. "B", 50th Georgia Infantry Regiment, which was a Ware county company; however he was rejected by the regimental surgeon. On September 22, 1862, he was accepted as a volunteer in Co. "A", 24th Georgia Battalion (cavalry). On February 13, 1864, he was transferred to Co. "G", 7th Georgia Cavalry by consolidation. He was captured at Louisa Courthouse, Virginia, June 11, 1864, and died of chronic diarrhea in Federal Prison, Elmira, New York November 3, 1864. His grave number is 841 of the Confederate graves in Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, New York.
After the War the widow continued to live on the farm with her children and reared them to maturity. She never remarried. She was buried at Kettle Creek Church near Waycross.
