David G. Mathis lived in eastern Echols County a year or two, and while there he united about 1870-1 with Bethel Primitive Baptist Church. Returning to Berrien County he was dismissed by letter from Bethel Apr. 5, 1873, and transfered to Pleasant Church in Berrien, July 19, 1873. In 1875 he removed to Clinch County and was dismissed by letter from Pleasant Church, July 15, 1875. He then united with Ramah Primitive Baptist Church near where he had located in Clinch, Apr. 15, 1876. His wife then on April 20, 1876, united with Ramah Church and was baptized. He and his wife withdrew from Ramah Church, July 21, 1883, because of doctrinal differences. Soon after, they united with the nearby Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, and remained members there until their removal to Florida about 1911. In June, 1886, he was ordained by Bethel Church to the Gospel ministry and thereafter for many years led a busy life preaching and pastoring churches in Clinch and Ware Counties. Among his ministerial activities was that of Chaplain for five years to the Clinch County convict camps at Fargo, the camp being operated under the convict-lease system. He was pastor of his home church, Bethel, for twelve or fifteen years.
The homeplace of Rev. Mathis was on lot of land 340, 12th district of Clinch County, which he owned and on which was his rather large farm. After a married life of over forty years he and his wife separated and were divorced in 1911 in Clinch Superior Court. They both then went to Florida and each lived about with their children. He sold out his holdings to W. H. Chancey in 1911. Rev. Mathis died in July, 1932, and his former wife died in April, 1933. They were buried at Vero Beach, Fla.
Rev. Mathis was a member of the Masonic order many years. He received his degrees in Cassia Lodge, No. 224, at Homerville, in April 1890. In 1894 he transferred to Sirmans Lodge, No. 378, at Dupont, and died a member of that lodge. He served several years as lodge Chaplain in Sirmans Lodge.
