Death Claims Bryant Cowart

Well known pioneer resident of Hahira section dies at home after illness. Services to be held this afternoon. Bryant Cowart, 76, well known pioneer of the Hahira section, died at his farm home early yesterday morning. He had been ill health for three months and had been confined to his bed about two weeks.

Funeral service were to be held at Cat Creek Church this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock Elder Charles Vickers conducting the rites.

Interment will be in the churchyard.

Mr. Cowart is survived by his wife and two daughters and nine sons. The daughters are Mrs. Coppage, Hahira, and Mrs. Briggs Martin, Adel. The sons are D. H. Cowart, Jesse H. Cowart, Fred L. Cowart, Frank Cowart, John Cowart, and Allen Cowart, all of Hahira, S. W. Cowart, Adel, J. B. Cowart, Lakeland, and Rufus Cowart, Fitzgerald.

Mr. Cowart had a wide family connection. He had spent his entire life in this section. He enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him.

The body was removed from Carson McLane Funeral Home yesterday afternoon and was carried to the residence where it was to remain until the hour of the funeral.

General Notes: Husband - Norman Rathbone Pounds

Norman R. Pounds Jr., 70, died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at home following a brief illness.

Born in Palatka, he was a lifelong resident of the Palatka and Hastings areas. He was a charter member of Christ Independent Methodist Church in Palatka and a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He had owned and operated Pounds Produce Company in East Palatka and Hastings for 50 years. He was the first president of the Florida Growers Exchange and was a registrar for the Methodist Men's Retreat in Leesburg for several years.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Edith Coward Pounds of Hastings; son and daughter-in-law, Gary S. and Janice Pounds of Hastings; daughter and son-in-law, Norma Kaye and John Calloway of Hastings; and six grandchildren.
The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Independent Methodist Church with Rev. Amos Price and Rev. Cary Killian officiating. Burial will be in Palatka Memorial Gardens.

General Notes: Wife - Edith Cowart

Edith Cowart Pounds, 87, of Hastings, Florida, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2015, at Palatka Health Care Center following an extended illness.

A native of Hahira, Georgia, she resided in Palatka from 1947-1972 before moving to Hastings where she lived for 39 years. For many years, Edith had owned and operated Edith's Catering as well as Pounds Bakery. Prior to that, she worked with her husband, Norman, in the family produce business. Edith had been very active at Christ Independent Methodist Church where she was a charter member. She will be remembered as a very modest and humble woman who loved spending time with her family and especially her grandkids.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Norman Pounds; her parents, Jesse Cowart and Beulah Wilkinson Cowart; two brothers, Lloyd and Billy Cowart; a sister, Janie Williams, and a great-grandson, Tate Ryan Rivers.

Edith is survived by a son, Gary Pounds and wife Janice; a daughter, Norma Kay Callaway and husband John, all of Hastings; six grandchildren, Cliff Rivers and wife Jessica, Garrett Rivers, Ryan Rivers, Stephen Pounds and wife Audra, Katie Forte and husband Matthew, and Jonathan Pounds and wife Samantha; 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2015, at Christ Independent Methodist Church in Palatka with the Rev. Michael Hudson and the Rev. Amos Price, officiating. Burial will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Christ Independent Methodist Church.

John Register was born in Bulloch County, June 10, 1819, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Register (Vol. 1), He was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Cowart, born 1820, daughter of William B. Cowart (Vol. 1). They were married in June, 1839. She died about 1856 and was buried at Union Church, in present Lanier County. By her six children were born, viz:

John Register was a veteran of the Indian Wars in this section 1838-41, and drew a pension for his service. He served under Capt. Levi J. Knight in his company of Lowndes County militia in 1838, as 3rd Corporal; also under Capt John J. Johnson in the 2nd Regiment, East Florida Volunteers, June 16, 1837 to Dec. 18, 1837, and as a private in 1840-41 under Capt. Jonathan Knight in his company of Lowndes County militia. He was also a veteran of the Confederate Army, and served two years.

He resided at different times in Clinch, Echols and Berrien Counties and in Hamilton County, Fla., his latter years being spent mostly in Echols where he died April 8, 1907. He was buried at Union Church.
