General Notes: Husband - Joseph Crews

Joseph Crews, sometimes listed as Joseph Crews, Jr. to differentiate from another Joseph Crews (when both were residing next door to one another in Ware County, GA) was born in South Carolina. Folks Huxford states Beaufort District, South Carolina. Birthdates for Joseph range widely from 1790-1800 (1840 census for Ware county) to 1805 (1850 Census for Ware).

Judge Folks Huxford tells us Joseph was a son of 1790 Samuel and Elizabeth Crews. The problem with this is Samuel and Joseph are too close in their ages to be father and son, if their respective ages have been documented correctly.

Perhaps a clue to Joseph's father's identity is a quote from Pioneers of Wiregrass Volume III. "Joseph Crews was a first-cousin to Wm. B. Crews (Vol. I) according to his (Joseph's) daughter, Mrs. Corbett; their fathers being brothers". Stephen Crews is William B. Crews' father therefore, Joseph's father is a brother to Stephen.

This is an interesting statement for several reasons. Folks Huxford's Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia Volume 3, informs the reader Stephen is a son of Alexander. However, none of Alex's offspring could have fathered Joseph based on birth dates. Also, Huxford's books indicate Stephen, William, 1790 Samuel, 1805 John II, and Joseph were all born in Beaufort District of South Carolina while other Crews; Alexander, Micajah, Roger, and Edward were said to be born in Colleton/Charleston District.

There was a post from 2005 Rootsweb informing the readers that Stephen is not a son of Alexander but a brother to 1790 Samuel. Yet, DNA testing has helped certify Joseph is very closely related to at least Isham, Alexander and 1790 Samuel Crews.

Joseph's third son is named Alexander (traditionally a third son is named after the father). Skip to 1840 and Joseph Crews is found living among Stephen, William, Dempsey, and Sophia (married to Max Whidden) in Ware County, Georgia. They remain neighbors during the 1850 Ware Census.

So, Joseph's parents currently remain a mystery. More DNA testing by other Wiregrass Crews descendants may yet resolve this.

He married about 1834 to Sarah Johns, born 1815 in South Carolina. Sarah was the daughter of Jeremiah "Jerry" Johns and Levicy. Joseph and Sarah had eight children, all born in Georgia. They are:

1.Samuel b. 1839, m. Morgiana Waldron, daughter of Elias D. Waldron
2. Martha M.b. 1840, never married.
3.Joseph b. 1841, m. Fannie Corbett, daughter of David.
4.Alexanderb. 1842, wounded and captured in war. Died in a Union prison.
5. Charity b. 1844, m. Wily Shaw of Hamilton County, GA
6. Elizabethb. 1846, never married.
7. Julia Ann b.. 1849, m. Henry Corbett, son of Daniel

Judge Huxford's notes state Joseph was in Ware County in 1840. His mustering into service during the 2nd Seminole Indian War in Columbia County in 1837 and 1838, support this statement.

Joseph was a farmer, but did a couple tours of duty during the Second Seminole Indian War. The first record is Joseph Crews shown as a private in Capt William B. North's 2nd Reg., 2nd Brigade. The muster sheet states the militia was ordered into service by Major General Thos S. Jessup from June 1837 to Dec. 1837 and enrolled in Columbia Co. Fla.

The next record, Joseph Crews Jr. is shown as private in Capt William B. North's Co. of Florida mounted militia. The muster sheet states the militia was ordered into service by the governor from 4/6/38 to 7/12/38 and enrolled in Columbia Co. Fla. Mr. Crews was also a private in Capt. John J. North's volunteer militia company, which patrolled the state line in 1842, against Indian excursions into Georgia from Florida.

Joseph and family were in Ware County in 1840 (district 719). This would now be Echols County. Joseph's neighbors during the 1840 Ware census are Stephen, Alexander, and Joseph Sr., Crews.

Joseph and Sarah were active at the Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, also known as Boney Bluff, along with other Crews relations, Dempsey, William B., and Stephen. First mentions of Sarah in the church minutes and roles began in 1 October 1843 with her Baptism. Joseph in 1847 when he joined Bethel as a member in April of 1847 and was baptized in June of 1847.

The family was living in Ware during the 1850 Census in an area stated as District 89. This is now in Echols County. In the 1850 census, Joseph Sr., William B. and Elizabeth Crews (Stephen's widow households are his neighbors.

He died about 1856 (though the Meeting Minutes of Boney Bluff from Jun, 1849 lists Joseph as dead at that time) and his wife died in March of 1860. Both were buried in a private burying-ground on lot of land 310, 12th district of Clinch County. This location was now known as the Ramah Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family was then living in that community.

The children were taken in charge by neighbors and reared to maturity. The 1860 Census for Clinch County, Georgia shows Joseph and Sarah's children were split up among neighbors. The younger children including Simon and Julia (ages 11 and 12) were in the Thomas S. Morgan household. Charity was enumerated in the Benjamin Dryden home. Samuel, Joseph, and Alexander (ages 24, 20, and 18) were in the James North household. This is shortly after wife Sarah's death.

Joseph Crews
1794 - After 1850

Joseph was born in 1794 in Colleton County, South Carolina, where his parents are found in 1810 US Census. He was a son of Micajah and Mary Crews. A written record states Mary was a "Pugh" from Wilkes County, Georgia and also referenced an Elijah Pugh, as perhaps her father, in that county in 1793. This statement can not be confirmed.

Joseph was in Camden when the 1820 Census was taken, living next to his father and mother; the only other persons enumerated in this household was a young female between 11 and 14 years of age and a male slave 14 years old or younger.

Early handwritten notes residing in the Crews vertical files in the Bryan-Lang Historical Library indicate he married Catherine Ann Turner, born 1805 in North Carolina.

There were four children of this union:

Ann Marie born 1829 in Camden County, Georgia; married William S. Smith, 8 Nov 1848 in Camden.
Joseph C. born 1831 in Camden, married Mary Catherine Lefills, born 16 July 1837, on 30 Oct 1856 in Darrien, McIntosh County, Georgia. He died 27 Nov 1889 in Duval County, Florida.
Virginia born about 1835 in Camden, married Oscar Hart (Deputy Clerk of Duval County Court during 1844), died 26 Apr 1896 in Otter Creek, Levy County, Florida.
Mary born 1836, married Reuben Henry Charles, died 11 Apr 1878 in Lake City, Florida.

The name of the eldest child is based on an entry in the Camden County Deed Books stating; 13 Jan 1831, Maria J. Turner (Catherine's sister) makes a deed of gift of a negro girl to her "beloved niece" Ann Marie Crews.

Joseph was named as an heir in his father, Micajah's, will dated 9 Feb 1823, along with his mother, sisters, and niece.

Joseph was called for Jury Duty in the Camden Inferior Court during June 1825 (as both Jr. and Sr. were on this particular jury) and possibly 1826, though it cannot be determined which Joseph was called.

Joseph was still in Camden when the 1830 Census was taken. In this census he is listed as Joseph Jr. Persons enumerated in this household was a young female under 5, another female 15-20, and likely his wife Catherine Turner in the 20-30 year old range. The female listed between 15-20 is unknown at this time however, this female is possibly a sister of Catherine (Joseph's siblings are accounted for). Catherine does have at least one known sister, Maria J. Turner.

The family still resides in Camden County during the 1840 Census. There is 1 male child (Joseph age 5-10) 2 females age 5-10 and 1 female under 5. The female under 5 would be Mary. The two females; one being Virginia and the other would be Ann Marie. The family resides in the Jefferson/Great Satilla River area.

Joseph and Catherine relocated from Camden to Duval County sometime between daughter Ann's November 1848 marriage and before the summer of 1850.

The family is found in the 1850 Duval County, Florida census. Joseph is 56, Catherine Ann is 45. Three of the four children were enumerated; Joseph age 19, Virginia age 15, and Ann M. (Mary) age 14.

17 Aug 1772; Joseph (Cruse) is mentioned as a recipient of a hymn book from the Estate of William Purse in the Charleston District, South Carolina Probate Court Estate Inventories

"South Carolina Probate Records, Files and Loose Papers, 1732-1964," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939L-V392-5M?cc=1911928&wc=MP5S-W3D%3A190562801%2C190562802%2C190753901%2C190560104 : 21 May 2014), Charleston > Probate Court, Estate inventories > 1772-1776 > No File Description Available > image 179 of 350; county courthouses, South Carolina, and South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Columbia.

Subject is listed as Joseph Cruse in the 1790 Federal Census for St Bartholomews Parrish, Colleton County, Charleston District, of South Carolina. There are 3 males 16 and older, and two females in the household. Joseph lived next door to Jacob Carter Sr.; our 5th Great-Grandfather.

"United States Census, 1790," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYBZ-H8R?cc=1803959&wc=3XT9-MY7%3A1584070604%2C1584070603%2C1584070622 : 21 May 2015), South Carolina > Charleston > St Bartholomes > image 9 of 30; citing NARA microfilm publication M637, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).

The relationship between Micajah and this Joseph is speculation on the author's behalf. There was a note stating Micajah's father was Joseph and this Joseph lived in the same proximity and is of the correct age range (wish I could find that note again).

GRANDMA PEG LEG

GRANDMA PEG LEG

SHE WAS CALLED GRANDMA PEG LEG, BECAUSE ONE OF HER LEG WAS SHORTER THAN THE OTHER. HER HUSBAND WOULD WHITTLE HER A LEG WHEN THAT ONE WORE DOWN. WHEN THE INDIANS WERE FIGHTING AGAINST THE WHITE PEOPLE,GRANDMA PEG LEG WOULD TAKE HER CHILDREN TO THE RIVER AND HIDE UNDER ROCKS TILL THE INDIANS WOULD PASS. GRANDMA PEG LEG AND HER CHILDREN, ALSO SURROUNDING NEIGHBORS WAS GATHERED UP BY THE ARMY AND TAKEN TO ST.AUGUSTINE TO THE FORT THERE FOR SAFETY. AT THAT TIME GERONIMO, THE INDIAN CHIEF WAS HELD CAPTURE. THE INDIANS HAD A DIFFICULT TIME ADAPTING TO THE FLORIDA CLIMATE TILL THEY WERE LOSING WEIGHT. GRANDMA PEG LEG TOOK CARE OF GERONIMO. WHEN IT WAS SAFE TO RETURN, THEY CAME BACK TO NASSAU COUNTY. FAMILY SAID SHE LIVE A LONG LIFE RAISING HER CHILDREN BECAUSE HER HUSBAND WAS KILLED AT A BARN RISING. A FIGHT BROKE OUT AND HE RAN TO GET HER AND WAS SLASHED ACROSS THE STOMACH WHERE LATER HE DIED OF THE KNIFE WOUND AT A YOUNG AGE. HE WAS VERY PROTECTIVE OVER HER. AFTER THE DEATH OF HER HUSBAND, HER SON-IN-LAW JOHN CARROLL TOOK OVER WHITTLING HER A NEW PEG LEG. GRANDMA PEG LEG MAY NOT HAD LIVE LONGER THAN WHAT THE DATES SHOW ON HER HEADSTONE. SOME SAY 120 YRS OLD.BUT NOT SURE. CENSUS DATES SHOW DIFFERENT (THEY ARE POSSIBLY RIGHT) THAN HER HEADSTONE. THIS WHAT FAMILY MEMBERS HAS TOLD THROUGH THE YEARS.... KAREN MATHIS HUDSON

I HAD TO REPHRASE MY STORY REGARDING HER BIRTH & DEATH DATES. BE NICE!!! THANK YOU.

Marriage Date 10 June 1855, Charlton County, Georgia, USA.

General Notes: Husband - Joseph M. Crews

Joseph M. Crews
1783 - 1848

Joseph M. Crews was born in the Charleston District in 1783 and was one of first two Crews that settled in Camden County, GA in the 1790-1805 peiod. .

Joseph married Elizabeth Smith Hazzard, born about 1780. She was a daughter of Richard Hazzard III and his 2nd wife, Jeanette McCloud therefore, a half sister of Isabella Maria Hazzard Floyd. Elizabeth was from Beaufort, SC

The earliest official records of Joseph's whereabouts begin with an entry (year unknown) in the Camden County Inferior Court Minutes. The was a judgment against Joseph Crews for the amount of six hundred twelve dollars and twenty cents bringing the amount of the County and Poor Tax for the years 1805-6 and 1807.

"For the relief of John Hardee, security on the bond of Joseph Crews given according to law by the said Joseph Crews as tax collector for the county of Camden, for the years of 1805, 1806, and 1807". Augusta chronicle and Georgia advertiser. (Augusta, Ga.) 1822-1831, January 29, 1831, Image 2

Joseph was a Deputy Sheriff in Camden County in 1808. In this capacity, Joseph conducted a public sale on January 5th for Lot #4 in St Marys to Robert Stafford and his siblings. This lot was later sold in 1822 to a shopkeeper named Sylvester Silva.

Camden County Superior Court minutes note Joseph was appointed Receiver of Tax Returns during January 5, 1808.

A newspaper article from the Savannah Advertiser indicates Joseph was indicted for perjury by the Camden County Grand Jury, along with David G. Jones, Joseph Powers, and John Ross (the later was a Justice in Camden Inferior Court). An anonymous writer, in a letter to the editor in the Mar 20, 1809 to the same newspaper, laments "the sad spectacle of men prominent in the public affairs of the county stooping to swearing falsely".

Joseph does not appear in Camden Co 1820 census, though we know Joseph was in the county during this period. There were a few boarding houses in St Marys during this period and would likely has been enumerated there. For an example; Isaac Crews boarding house had 7 males in Joseph's age range enumerated there in 1820

Joseph, along with John Hardy and Edward Sherman are listed as Tax Collector that defaulted Camden County of a total of $2734 for the years of 1805-1807. Augusta chronicle & Georgia gazette. (Augusta, Ga.) 1821-1822, January 03, 1822, Image 2

Joseph was called for Jury Duty in the Camden Inferior Court during June 1825 (as both Jr and Sr were on this particular jury) and again possibly 1826, though it cannot be determined which Joseph was called.

Joseph and Elizabeth do appear in Camden Co 1830 census in the Floyds Neck area. He is listed as Joseph Crews Sr. No children were enumerated within this household.

Records in Camden County reflect Joseph M. Crews being eligible for the 1832 Georgia Cherokee Land Lottery and the 1832 Gold Lottery (as a soldier, likely War of 1812)

Sometime during 1832, Joseph offers to Probate the will of an Isaac Hatcher.

Name: Joseph M. Crews
Number:176
District:SIXTH DISTRICT, FOURTH SECTION, CHEROKEE
Residence:Hopkins's
County:Camden
Comment:soldier.; granted previous to the first day of January, 1838

Crews, Joseph M. acquired 200 acres on pine land on the Satilla River in Camden, November 17, 1837. Camden records indicate he paid taxes on same. Joseph apparently did not own any land previously as earlier Camden Tax records have him only paying Poll Tax.

Joseph and his wife were enumerated on this land in the 1840 Camden census in the Great Satilla River area. No others are in this household.

Elizabeth died 15 June 1841 "at Bellevue" Plantation, Camden County Georgia and was interred in the Floyd Family Cemetery.

Joseph returned to South Carolina after Elizabeth's death where he died 11 Jan 1848. His age was listed as 65 making his birth 1783. Died of Cancer in City of Charleston.

NOTES on the FLOYD FAMILY CEMETERY

By Marguerite Marreé Mathews, Raleigh, NC - Floyd Research 1981-2000.

HISTORICAL SYNOPSIS: In 1795, the four Floyds (Charles Floyd & his wife, Mary Fendin; their son, John Floyd & his wife, Isabella Maria Hazzard) moved from Beaufort Dist., SC to McIntosh Co., GA. In 1800 they moved to Camden County, GA, where Charles and John Floyd purchased large tracts of land in the area now called Floyd's Neck - situated north and south between the Satilla River and the Crooked River, and, east and west between what is now I-95 and the marshes of St. Andrews Sound. The Floyds built two plantations about a mile distant of one another. John Floyd built Bellevue Plantation (The Anchor House), located within view of the marshes of Todd's Creek for his father, Charles. He built Fairfield Plantation on Floyd's Creek for himself. After Charles Floyd died, John moved into Bellevue. He gave Fairfield to his eldest son, Charles Rinaldo Floyd. During the Civil War, both plantations were bombarded by gunboats entering St. Andrews Sound. Nothing is left of Fairfield, and of Bellevue, only the tabby ruins remain.

ELIZABETH SMITH HAZZARD CREWS born ca. 1780 (dau. of RICHARD HAZZARD III/ESQ. & his 2nd wife, JEANETTE McCLOUD); half sister of ISABELLA MARIA HAZZARD FLOYD; wife of JOSEPH CREWS; she died 15 June 1841 "at Bellevue" Plantation, Camden Co., GA; buried in the Floyd Family Cemetery in the Floyds Neck area of Camden County, Georgia. **Diary of Augusta Gallie Floyd - Vol. III Oct. 1880-Jan. 1886

Elizabeth was from Beaufort, SC

Deed Book F
(F/17) William HAZZARD, ESQ., of South Carolina, to Anthony WAYNE of Pennsylvania, "Maj. Gen. in the late Army". It is stated that William HAZZARD, Sr., by his will devised this property to his wife (unnamed in deed) and that she deeded it to her only son, William HAZZARD, the grantor in the present deed.
