General Notes: Husband - Joshua Mathis



Joshua Mathis was born in 28 October 1828 in Lowndes County, Georgia (1).  He is the son of John Mathis and Jemima Lee. Joshua married Rachel Hazel Touchton, a daughter of William Touchton and Sarah Delk during 1855.  Joshua and Rachel had six children:

Sarah A. b. March 3, 1848 d. February 15 1935 m. Hillery Melton December 29, 1875.

Wealthy b. 1852
Rachel b. 1857
John b. 1860
Unity b. 1864

Joshua and Rachel were enumerated in Ware County, GA in 1850, ages 22 and 21.  Rachel's sister Mary was also in the household during this time.

The family home during the 1900 census was Pine Grove, in Suwannee County, Florida.  At this time, Joshua is age 73. His father's birthplace is South Carolina as well as his mother's.  It is here that the marriage date of 1855 is listed.  I think the 45 years married is suspect.  That would put the marriage date at 1855.  Joshua and Rachel had three children before that date.  Joshua, as with many of our family members was listed as a farmer.  The date of his demise is unknown as of this writing.

Joshua was living in Suwannee County, Florida on 2 Mar 1903 when he applied for Pension for his service in the CSA.
He enlisted in 1864 in Captain James Kings Calvary Company in Columbia County, FL.  He was discharged at the end of the War.  The Company served under General Joseph E. Johnston.  His Pension was approved on 10 Jul 1903.  He received $96 yearly.

General Notes: Husband - William Hillery Melton



Hillary Melton was born Nov, 1856 in the Benton Community of Columbia County Florida.  He was the son of Daniel Melton and Sarah A. Cason.  Hillery married Sarah Mathis, daughter of Joshua Mathis and Rachel Hazel Touchton, on 29 Dec. 1875, in Columbia County, FL.

Hillery and Sarah had seven children.

The 1870 Census for Columbia County lists Hillery as living at the home of his father Daniel and Daniel's second wife, Mary.  Hillery's mother Sarah passed away in 1862 and Daniel remarried in 1863.  Hillery is 13 years of age at the time of this enumeration.

Hillary is listed as age 26 in the 1880 census.  His birthplace is Florida and he is listed as a Farmer.  He was enumerated in Pct. 2. Vol. I ED 19 Sheet 11 Line 25 in the Federal Census for Columbia County.  Daughters Elizabeth, 4, and Rainey 3, are living with Hillary and wife Sarah.

In April, 1900, Federal Records indicate Hillery was granted 164 acres of land from the "public domain" .  Note the document itself bears the signature of President William McKinley (see Appendix B)

Hilary is listed as age 43 in the 1900 census.  Daughters Rachel, age 15, Myantha, age 14, Unity, age 12, and Martha Ann, age 7 were enumerated in the household at this time.  Daughter Lizzie and her family lived three farms away.  Hillery's birthplace is listed as Columbia Co. FL.  This census states Hillary could neither read nor write.
Hillary is listed as age 55 and Sarah age 56 in the 1910 census.  No others were enumerated in their household, though son Frank and his family lived on the next farm over.  His birthplace listed as Columbia Co. FL.

Hillary is listed as age 63 in the 1920 census.  His birthplace listed as Georgia (this is obviously a mistake).

Hillary had passed away before the 1930 Census, but wife Sarah, age 79, was enumerated in son Frank's household.

Hillery passed away 26 March,1923 in the area where he was born and raised.  Wife Sarah passed away 15 Feb. 1935.  Hillary and Sarah are buried in the Prospect Church Cemetery Hamilton County, FL in unmarked graves.

Sarah is buried in the Prospect Church Cemetery (Columbia Co., FL) in an unmarked grave per Dolores Carpenter.  Delores also stated Sarah was blind.

Thomas Mathis, a son of John Mathis (Vol. 1), was born in Bulloch County in 1808.  He removed to Lowndes County with his parents, and was married in November 1st, 1826, to Eady (sometimes spelled "Edith") Register, a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Register (Vol. 1).  She was also born in Bulloch County; she was born February 1, 1809 and died February 10, 1869.  To Mr. and Mrs. Mathis were born:

 1. Timothyb. 1828, m. Jemima Cowart, daughter of William B. (Vol. 1).
2. Samuelb. 1831, m. Martha Gray, daughter of Zachariah (Vol. 1).
3. Elizabethb. 1834, m. (husband, if any, unknown).
4. Phoebeb. 1838, m. James Patten, son of James M. (Vol. 1).
5. Eadyb. 1840, m. (1) Irwin Cowart (2) Elam Sapp.
6. Marthab. 1843, m. John J. Griffin December 19, 1861, son of Benjamm.
7. Missourib. 1847, m. William G. Giddens January 24, 1869, son of J. B.

Mr. Mathis lived in Lowndes County on the east side of the Alapaha River in the present Stockton district of present Lanier County, and near his wife's parents several years after marriage.  In 1850, he sold out and moved to the present County of Berrien.  He bought lot of land 44, 10th district, on which he located, cleared up a f arm and made his home until his death in 1893.  In 1856, he was cut out of Lowndes into Berrien County.
Mrs. Eady Mathis died February 10, 1869, at her parents' home in Clinch County, while on a visit to see her ailing father who died two months later.  Her illness was short and was due to pneumonia.  She was buried at Wayfare Primitive Baptist Church.  Mr. Mathis sometime afterwards married Mrs. Roxie Morgan, who was the widow first of Eli Bass and then of Elihu Morgan of Echols County; she was a daughter of Levi Starling.  She was born 1834.  There was no issue by that marriage.
Thomas Mathis and his wife Eady united with Union Primitive Baptist Church about 1838 (date not shown by church records).  They were dismissed by letter December 12, 1840.  They united with Flat Creek church May 7, 1853, and were dismissed by letter April 1855; their later membership has not been traced.
Thomas Mathis is buried at Flat Creek Church in Berrien County.

William Mathis was born in Bulloch County, May 17, 1825, a son of David Mathis (Vol. II). When about six months old he was brought by his parents to Lowndes County and grew up in that county. He was married there Dec. 31, 1846, to Martha E. Strickland, oldest child and daughter of Simpson Strickland. She was born in Lowndes (now Brooks) County, Dec. 22, 1829.

William and Martha Mathis had eleven children, viz:

William Mathis and his oldest son, Simpson, both served in the Georgia militia the last year of the Civil War. Simpson died of measles while in the service, age nearly 17 years. The Mathis home and plantation was cut out of Lowndes into Berrien County in its formation in 1856, and since 1918 has been in Cook County.

Mr. Mathis died Aug. 21, 1886, and his wife died March 5, 1890. They were buried in the Mathis cemetery near Cecil, Ga.
