O'NEAL, THOMAS.
1795-1821
WAYNE
Thomas O'Neal was born about 1795 in Georgia, son of William O'Neal (Vol. III). He was married in Wayne County, Sept. 23, 1817, to Sibbiah Stafford, daughter of Robert Stafford, R.S., (Vol. I). They had two children, viz:
1. Marthab. 1819, m. Henry W. Turner, Feb. 18, 1835.
2. Mary T.b. 1821, m. John F. May, Glynn Co., Oct. 10, 1838.
Thomas O'Neal served as ensign in a militia detachment in the 74th Battalion, Wayne County militia, in 1813 (War of 1812). In 1818, he was elected Sheriff of Wayne county, and served 1818-1820. When his term of office was out he moved to Darien, McIntosh County, but seems to have died the same year he moved there. An obituary in The Darien Gazette, issue of July 14, 1821, says he died in McIntosh County, July 1, 1821, and was survived by his wife and one child. The second child was born posthumously. The widow and children soon moved back to Wayne county, and she was appointed their guardian, May 3, 1824. She later moved to Glynn County where she died about 1839 and where her two daughters married.

O'NEIL, WILLIAM.
1760-1821
WAYNE
William O'Neil was one of the first settlers of Wayne County, having been cut into it out of Glynn County in the reshaping of the county by legislative act in 1805. The Compiler has been unable to determine when and where he was born or maiden name of his wife. His wife was named Treacy and survived him a few years. To William and Treacy O'Neil were born the following children (birth dates are all approximated):
1. Johnb. 1790, m. Ist. Hester Collier, March 31, 1812; 2nd. Margaret Joiner. July 19, 1822, dau. of Charles.
2. Williamb. 1792, m. Mary Joiner, Dec. 6, 1815, dau. of Charles.
3. Maryb. 1795, m. Edward Pitcher.
4. Marthab. 1796, m. Elijah Rose Tucker, Dec. 31, 1813.
5. Thomasb. 1797, m. Sibbiah Stafford, Sept. 23, 1817, dau. of Robert.
6. Elizabethb. 1800, m. William Stafford, bro. to said Sibbiah.
7. Samuelb. 1804, m. (unknown).
8. Cotton B.b. 1808, m. Julia Ann -. Removed to Jefferson Co., Fla., thence to Hernando Co., Fla.
The earliest record found so far concerning William O'Neil was in Effingham County where he was commissioned a lieutenant in the Effingham County militia, Oct. 9, 1787. He removed from there to Montgomery County shortly before its creation; he was commissioned April 28, 1795, a lieutenant in the "Upper Ohoopee Company" of Montgomery County militia. From there he removed to Glynn County about 1798, where he settled on the south side of the Altamaha River opposite old Fort Barrington. The legislature on Dec. 22, 1808, granted to him "and his heirs" the exclusive ferry rights across the Altamaha to Fort Barrington from the Wayne County side of the river. He served as a Justice of Peace in Glynn County, 1799-1801.
By legislative act in 1805 a large part of the western side of Glynn County was detached and placed in Wayne County as explained in Vol. 11, pp. 2-3. This change included William O'Neil, and by legislative act approved Dec. 7, 1805, he was named one of the Justices of Wayne Inferior Court to perfect the organization of the county, there having been no county government installed since the creation of the county two years before. Mr. O'Neil served about three or four years on the Infer ior Court bench, and In 1818 was returned to the court and served as a Justice until his death in 1821. He was commissioned Captain of the 28th district militia, Nov. 13, 1820, and was holding the office at his death. He was State Senator from Wayne County at the time of his death, having been elected a few months before.
The will of Mr. O'Neil was dated July 20, 1813, and was probated March 5, 1821. It bequeathed his estate to his wife and children as named above. Elijah R. Tucker and William Stafford were named executors. Receipts by the heirs to the executors include one by Patience Rawls "for my part of the legacy" dated Nov. 19, 1822, but it does not appear what her relationship was to the testator; she was not named in the will. Samuel and Cotton B. O'Neil were minors at their father's death, and their brother John qualified as their guardian May Ist, 1823.
Mr. and Mrs. O'Neil were buried in a family burying ground on his old plantation.
