Home / News / Fort Myers Beach News / Former Fort Myers Beach Mayor Bill Van Duzer remembered

ort Myers Beach lost a significant figure in its young history as an incorporated town last week when former mayor Bill Van Duzer died Jan. 22 at the age of 85.

Van Duzer, who was given the key to the town when he moved to Marathon in 2011, was on the town council from 2001 to 2005. He served as mayor in his final year on the council, in the wake of Hurricane Ian. He was a longtime member of the town's Local Planning Agency, serving before his time on the council and after his term on the council.

Van Duzer was a contractor who is credited with building many of the homes on Fort Myers Beach. On the Local Planning Agency and town council, he was a major contributor to dealing with planning matters.

According to an obituary provided by the family, Van Duzer was with his daughter Beth and son Stewart at the time of his death. He had been living in an assisted living facility in Naples.

Van Duzer's wife Carolyn predeceased him in 2020.

Longtime friend Fran Myers called Van Duzer an "icon" of Fort Myers Beach. "He was a giant of a man. He spent many, many years on Fort Myers Beach as a contractor and built our cottages on the island. He built many of our homes. He believed in the island," Myers said.

His daughter Beth Coon, who now resides in Lehigh Acres, said Van Duzer "died peacefully." He had been diagnosed with dementia.

"He either built or remodeled most of the homes that are down there," Coon said. Coon, who grew up on Fort Myers Beach, said "he was a wonderful man. He loved Fort Myers Beach. We're going to miss him."

Joellyn Reckwerdt, who was a close friend of Van Duzer along with her husband Ted, said Van Duzer was instrumental in elevating the Fort Myers Beach Lion's Club Shrimp Festival. Carolyn was a former Shrimp Festival Queen.

"He liked the people and the atmosphere of Fort Myers Beach," Ms. Reckwerdt said. "He certainly enjoyed going down to the Keys and going diving and fishing."

Born in the upstate New York city of Elmira, he moved to Fort Myers as a child. He moved to Jacksonville with his first wife Marilena before relocating to Fort Myers Beach in 1962. After working in the roofing business for a number of years, he went to work for Midgley Inc. and secured his Class A General Contractors license. He bought the construction business from Midgley and renamed it Van Care Construction.

He married Carolyn in 1979. She had two daughters from a previous marriage whom Bill adopted. He was active with the Fort Myers Little League and Babe Ruth League. He was a coach, umpire, concession stand volunteer and batting cage builder. He was an avid photographer, capturing his children's sporting events and band performances.

Bill was active with the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club and Lions International. He was always very involved in the annual Shrimp Festival. He was a District Governor with the Lions and an International Director. He belonged to the Estero Island Historical Society and St. Raphael's Episcopal Church.

Bill and Carolyn retired in Marathon for a short time before health issues forced them to move back to the mainland where they bought a place in North Fort Myers.

Upon stepping down from the Town of Fort Myers Beach Local Planning Agency in 2011, the committee issued the following proclamation:

"Bill Van Duzer is recognized for his hard work and dedicated service to the Town of Fort Myers Beach. He contributed his expertise in land planning to benefit the Local Planning Agency of the Town, providing insight and recommendations to address issues of concern to the welfare of the residents and visitors, and to support the local commercial interests. He created a positive environment for the Local Planning Agency while maintaining an attitude of courtesy toward colleagues, citizens and staff during discussions and deliberations. He discharged his duties without favor or prejudice while respecting all laws, rules and regulations. His contributions worked to insure that the unique and natural characteristics of the Town of Fort Myers Beach will be preserved."

Bill is survived by his son Stewart and three daughters Beth, Shelley, and Suzie. He has 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren to date.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home in Fort Myers.

Obituary
William (Bill) H. Van Duzer

12/24/1937 \endash 1/22/2023

Bill Van Duzer passed away peacefully on 1/22/23 with his daughter Beth and son Stewart by his side. The family is comforted in knowing that he is now in a better place in heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and is also reunited with his wife of 42 years Carolyn who predeceased him on 6/12/2020.

Bill was born in Elmira, NY but moved with his family as a child to Ft Myers. He graduated from Ft. Myers high school. After graduating HS Bill started working with a large roofing contractor Giffen Industries. He and his first wife, Marilena, lived for a short time in Jacksonville before moving to Ft. Myers Beach in 1962. Stewart was born in Jacksonville before they moved and Beth was born in Ft. Myers after they settled on Ft. Myers Beach. After working in the roofing business for a number of years Bill met Jim Midgley who was a builder on Ft. Myers Beach. He went to work for Midgley Inc. and ultimately secured his Class A General Contractors license. After a divorce from his wife Marilena, Bill bought the construction business from Jim Midgley. It would later be renamed Van Care Construction.

Bill met Carolyn, the love of his life, while getting some periodontal work done. It was love at first sight. They married in March of 1979. She was everything to him. She had 2 daughters from a previous marriage. Shelley and Suzie moved to the beach with their Mom. Later on Bill adopted Shelley and Suzie so they became Van Duzer's as well.

Over the years Bill would build or renovate more homes on Ft. Myers Beach than any other single builder. He also completed many commercial projects. But besides work he was also a devoted father. He was very active with the Ft. Myers Little League and Babe Ruth League. He was a coach, umpire, concession stand volunteer, batting cage builder, etc, etc. He was an avid photographer capturing his son's athletic endeavours and his daughters band performances with his camera.

Bill was also very active with the Ft. Myers Beach Lions Club and Lions International. He was always very involved in the annual Shrimp Festival. He was a District Governor with the Lions and an International Director. He and Carolyn traveled extensively with the Lions. Carolyn also became a member. Ultimately Bill became a lifetime member of Lions International.

After Ft. Myers Beach incorporated and became a city Bill became very involved with the city council and actually served a term as Mayor of Ft. Myers Beach.

Bill and Carolyn retired in Marathon, FL for a short time before health issues forced them to move back to the mainland where they bought a place in North Ft Myers. Altzheimers struck Carolyn shortly thereafter. After her passing Bill's health quickly declined and Dementia took its toll on him.

Bill is survived by his son Stewart and 3 daughters Beth, Shelley, and Suzie. He has 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren to date.

A "celebration of life service" will be held at 1:30 PM on 2/11/23 at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home 4320 Colonial Blvd Ft. Myers, FL.

General Notes: Husband - John J. North

NORTH, John J.
1792-1880
CLINCH

JOHN J. NORTH was born in Colleton District, South Carolina, November 16, 1792, a son of John North. He came to lower Wayne County and lived there about 1810-1827, when he moved to the southern part of Ware County near the Florida line, in what is now Echols County. After living there about thirty-five years, he sold out and moved to present Clinch County where he bought out the plantation of Jonathan Knight and which had been the old home place of Henry Joyce (q.v.). Here he lived until his death June 19, 1880. He was buried in a new cemetery on his land within sight of his residence, and his was the second grave there; the first grave being that of his grandson, George P. Livingston, who had been killed by a train at Dupont the day before Mr. North died. The spot for the burial had been previously picked out by Mr. North for his own burial, and is now known as the North Cemetery.
Mr. North was married four times and had a total of seventeen children. The first wife was Mary Crews, a daughter of Micajah Crews of Camden County; the marriage took place March 8, 1816. She died when her first child was born and Mr. North married again. Her name is Mary Bandy. After her death about 1830, Mr. North married again. The third wife was named Maria but her maiden name is not remembered. The fourth wife was Rebecca McMillan, daughter of Henry McMillan of Barnwell District, South Carolina. She was born March 22, 1819, and died June 4, 1893, and was buried by her husband in the North Cemetery. The children by the four marriages were as follows:

3. Martha b. 1821, m. William B. Crews, son of Stephen.
4. Sarah Isabel b. 1825, died single about 1860. She was baptized into Bethel Church, May 5, 1844; died a member.
5. Mariah b. 1826, never married; died September 16, 1886.
6. William B. b. 1828, m. Nancy Inman, daughter of John A. T. Inman.

10. Edward b. 1840, m. Mary Morgan, daughter of Thomas C. Died in C.S.A.
11. Palester b. 1842, m. (1) Henry P. Livingston, June 11, 1861 (2) Charles Conover, March 31, 1874.
12. Lydia b. 1843, m. Samuel J. C. Blount.
13. Gilpin b. 1845, died in boyhood.
14. William L. b. 1846, died in boyhood.

Fourth wife: Rebecca McMillan
15. Samuel b. 1855,died about 1872.
16. Charles H.b. 1856, m. (1) Belie Newbern, daughter of George W. (2) Minnie Kirkland, daughter of W. F.
17. Minnie M.b. 1859, m. Francis M. Anderson.

John J. North fought in the Indian Wars of 1836-1842, and served as Captain of the militia in the 719th district of' Ware County (territory now in Clinch and Echols Counties on Florida line). He was commissioned Captain September 7, 1840. His company was in active service in 1842 patrolling the state line while the Indian War was going on over in Florida after they had been driven out of Georgia.

Capt. North was Justice of Peace in the 719th district, Ware County, 1833-1835 and again 1843-1846. He served as a Justice of the Inferior Court of Clinch County, 1857-1861.

Capt. North was an early member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in Echols County. He was baptized into it June 14, 1843. His third wife, Rebecca, was received under the watch care of the church January 7, 1844 until she could get her letter from Smyrna Church in Wayne County but there appears no further record of her membership. Mr. North served as church clerk from 1843 until February 1849, and again from December 8, 1849 to October 12, 1850. On the latter date he was expelled. He was restored 1856 and again was church clerk 1856-1858. Expelled again 1860, he was restored July 11, 1868. He continued as a member of Bethel Church until his death.

Mrs. Rebecca McMillan North was received on "confession of faith" into Bethel Church, September 14, 1856. She was dismissed by letter June 17, 1882, and on June 2, 1883 she united by letter with Prospect Church near her home. She was dismissed by letter November, 1885 from Prospect, and apparently had not placed her membership elsewhere when she died in 1893.

Capt. North lost four sons in the Civil War, as shown above. Caleb North enlisted in Company "H", 29th Georgia Vol. Infantry Regiment, which was inducted into the service at Stockton, October 1st, 1861. He died of disease at home while on furlough, November 21, 1863. He was buried at Ramah Church in Clinch County. He left a wife and five little children. The widow took the children and went to Putnam County, Florida, where they grew to maturity and married, Florida being her old home before marriage.

John North and Ephriam North both died in the Confederate military service but their service record has not yet been secured.

Edward North enlisted with his brother, Caleb, in the same company and served until his death of disease, December 31, 1863, in a military hospital at Kingston, Georgia. He was probably buried there. He was survived by his wife; they had no children.

William B. North, a son of Capt. North, moved from Clinch County to Putnam County, Florida, about 1890, where his large family of nine sons and three daughters grew up and married.

James North, another son, remained in Clinch County and died there. He had ten children.

Note: The loss of the old North family Bible in recent years has made it impossible to learn the names of the second and third wives. List of the children as given above, is from memory of living descendants supplemented by the Census.

The North home where Capt. North died is still standing but badly dilapidated. The first court in Clinch County in 1850 was held there.

Census References: 1830, 1840, Ware; 1850, Ware (portion cut into Clinch); 1860, Echols; 1870, Clinch.

Dave, the North Cemetery is located west of Homerville on US 84. Turn right
onto North Cemetery rd just before Dupont or go into Dupont and turn right in
the middle of "town". The road runs between the two places.

The old North homestead was just at the end of the northern end of the
cemetery. The Knights own the property now, which is unusual since they are
the decedents of the Knights who John J bought the property from in the 1800s.

She was born January 18, 1819, in Tattnall County. She died about 1846, leaving five small children. Mr. North then married Nancy, born 1822 in Wayne County, daughter of Stephen Crews (Vol. 1). By her five children were born. The ten children were as follows:

Mr. North lived in the 719th district of what was then Ware County, his home being on the Suwannee River in present Echols County not far from his father's. (Territory cut into Clinch County 1850, and into Echols 1858). In 1856, he sold out there and moved to the 1141st district of Clinch County. He first settled on Lot of land 311 in the 12th land district which he bought in 1856 from W. M. Nichols. He lived there until 1867 when he acquired lot of land 454, same district, and moved there, built a home and farmed there until his death October 8, 1884.

Mr. North served in his father's militia company in 1842 in patrolling the Florida line during the Indian War in Florida. He was Justice of Peace in the 719th district, Clinch County, 1850-1856. When he moved to his new home in the 1141st district referred to above, he was immediately elected to the same office there in the first election for the office (the district having been created that year out of 719th). He served 1856-1858 and again 1861-1865.

Mr. North and his second wife were baptized into the membership of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in what was then Clinch but now Echols County. He was baptized August 9, 1856, and she on March 10, 1861. They were dismissed by letter March 9, 1876, and became charter members of the newly organized Ramah Church much nearer their home April 15, 1876. They died members of that church and were buried there. The first wife was buried at Bethel Church; grave unmarked.
