Micajah Crews Abt 1770-1823
Micajah Crews was born sometime before 1775 in South Carolina. This date is based on the 1820 U.S. Census of Camden County, Georgia. A former Bryan Lang Librarian and Camden County researcher, Dr. John Christian stated in his personal notes (on file in the Bryan Lang Historical Library in Woodbine, Georgia), "Joseph Crews of Charleston Dist. S. C. is supposed to have been the father of Micajah Crews." There was an elder Joseph Crews enumerated in St. Bartholomew's Parrish in the Charleston District listed as the head of the family with 3 free white males over the age of 16, 2 free white females, and four slaves. No additional information can be found to confirm this relationship at this time. Another reference to Micajah Crews by Dr Christian comes in the form of Micajah's wife Mary. The record states Mary was a "Pugh" and was from Wilkes County, Georgia. The record also referenced an Elijah Pugh residing within that county during 1793, that could be her father but neither can be confirmed. They would have been married in SC sometime during or before 1793.
Micajah and Mary were wed in South Carolina. Mary and Micajah had 4 children, all born in South Carolina:
1. Joseph born about 1795 married Catherine Turner.
2. Charity born 1796, married John Goodbread in Camden County.
3. Mary born about 1799 was John J North's 1st wife, married 8 Mar 1816, died during childbirth 1817.
4. Esther A. B. born 22 Aug 1803 married 1st William Haddock 22 Dec 1830 and later a gentleman with the surname of Hardee.
Micajah's name began appearing in South Carolina Deed records at the beginning of the Nineteenth century. Micajah acquired 906 acres of land in the fork of the Little and Big Saltketchers (Salkehatchie) Rivers 28 Jan 1800. Six years later on 1 Jan 1806, Micajah acquired 342 acres on the Cow Pen branch on the Little Saltketchers river as well as 264 acres on the (Big?) Saltketcher. On 25 August 1809 Micajah along with Alexander (brothers/cousins?) jointly acquired a 1,000 tract on Black Creek off the Saltketcher. All land was within Colleton County, South Carolina. Micajah was enumerated in Colleton County, SC during 1810 US Census. No other records of his life in South Carolina can be located as of this writing.
Next, we find Micajah and his family in Camden County, Georgia. He likely left South Carolina around the same time as Alexander and Stephen Crews, (1815-1816). The first record located for Micajah was during 1819. Micajah paid taxes in Camden County on "Pine Land" on the Great Satilla River, one pole tax and taxes on 2 negroes $350. This land, based on records, was within three miles of Jefferson, the county seat of Camden County during this period.
We find Micajah in this same area during the 1820 US Census for Camden. Within his home, Micajah is the only male enumerated with his age listed as 46 or over. Son Joseph lives next door and was enumerated separately. Also, there is one female under 10, 1 female under 26, and 1 female 46 or over. Wife Mary was, of course, the oldest female; daughter Esther was the middle female; as daughter Mary had passed away during childbirth 2 years earlier, and daughter Charity was married. The youngest female was Micajah's granddaughter Mary E.J. North.
Micajah was eligible for the 1820 Land Lottery, though he was not awarded land during this Lottery. It appears he was later awarded 200 acres of land via Headright 9 Apr 1821 Camden Co., GA (note: The Port Road from Satilla to Altamaha runs through property). While living in this area of the county, he served as the Postmaster at Jefferson, Camden County, GA.
A few years later, Micajah is selected as a juror for the January Term of 1821 in the Camden Court Inferior Court.
Based on the following'document, Micajah passed away early in 1823.
Micajah Crews 1823 Last Will and Testament: "First all debts to be paid from lands \endash if this is not sufficient then from the hire of his negroes \endash after which the proceeds of hire of negroes be equally divided among legates except John North until all is 15 years of age. Second that my property be kept for service of my wife Mary Crews, my daughter Esther A. B. Crews or as long as she remains single and my granddaughter Mary E. J. North until my granddaughter is 15. To son Joseph bed and pillow also cattle. To daughter Charity Goodbread a Negro man. To my son-in-law John J. North 100 cts good and lawful money of said state. Wife Mary Crews Executrix \endash Joseph Cone Executor \endash Feb 9, 1823 Witness Clayborn Wright, Louisa Paxon, Robert Paxon".
Within a codicil dated during 1823, no day or month named, Micajah Crews leaves his wife Mary all his hogs \endash Witness Edward Crews, Robert Paxon This will and codicil was sworn to by William Gibson J D CCC. Wm Bailey JD CCC, Alexander Akinson JD CCC, Hugh Brown JD CCC Recorded and Examined June 5, 1823 Micajah Crews: Last Will and Testament dated Feb.9, 1823, with Codicil dated - - 1823; Probated March 17, 1823. Bequeaths to wife, Mary; to daughter
Esther A.B. Crews; to grand-daughter Mary E.J. North; to son Joseph Crews; to daughter Charity
Goodbread; to son-in-law John J. North, $1.00. Executors: Wife and Joseph Cone. During the 3 Jan 1825 session of the Superior Court of Camden County, Mary was granted leave to sell a slave belonging to the estate. During that same session, Mary was officially appointed guardian of granddaughter Mary E.J. North. Mary again appeared in the Superior court on 7 Aug 1825 "to give bond to John J. North in the amount of $1000 with respect to the minor daughter. She had raised her granddaughter ever since her birth (indicating Mary Crews North died during childbirth) and desired to keep her until the end of her (Mary Crews') life. She guaranteed to raise and school young Mary and if the father should discover anything wrong then he could take the said child pay $1000 for nursing and rearing her.
Wife Mary Crews enumerated in the 1830 Census for Camden County, GA. There are three females in the household: 1 age 60-70 (Mary widow of Micajah) 1 age 20-30 (Charity later married John Goodbread in Dec the same year) 1 age 10-15 (granddaughter Mary E. J. North)
The last official record of Mary Crews, widow and Executrix of Micajah Crews, being in the "decline of life" and in poor health, gives Power of Attorney to Robert Paxon of Camden County, to look after her affairs and said estate. This entry was dated 8 Nov.1830
The exact date of Mary Crews' demise is unknown but it must have been soon after granting Power of Attorney to Mr. Paxon. Like husband Micajah, the final resting place is unknown, though both likely never left and are interred in Camden County, Georgia.

Enumerated in the Great Satilla River area of Camden County, GA during the 1830 Census. No males and two other females enumerated in her household. One female is 10-15 years of age; this female would be grand daughter Mary E. J. North. The other female is likely Esther A. B. as she didn't marry until December of 1830.
Eldest daughter Mary (mother of Mary E. J. North) was deceased and judging from above statement, likely died during childbirth.

Micajah Larrisey Crews Son of Stephen Crews and Elizabeth Larrisey. Born and Raised in Ware County, Georgia. His Parents Stephen & Elizabeth were members of Bethel Primitive Baptis Church (Boney Bluff). Stephen was a Deacon.
Their home & Church was on Woodpecker Route.
Micajah L Crews died as a prisoner of war in the Elmira Prison. According to the prisoner of war report, Micajah did hard labor for only 6 days and died from Chronic Diarrhea. His effects was buried with him. He was a part of the 7th Georgia Calvary Company G. Start date of 7th Calvary was Feb 24, 1864. Micajah died Oct 9, 1864 just a few short months later.
During the 15 months (the prison camp, in use from July 6, 1864, until the autumn of 1865, was dubbed "Hellmira" by its inmates) the site was used as a prisoner of war camp more than 12,100 Confederate soldiers were incarcerated there; of these, nearly 25% (2,963) died from a combination of malnutrition, continued exposure to harsh winter weather, and disease from the poor sanitary conditions on Foster's Pond combined with a lack of medical care. The camp's dead were prepared for burial and laid to rest by the sexton, an ex-slave named John W Jones, at what is now Woodland National cemetery. At the end of the war, each prisoner was required to take a Loyalty oath and given a train ticket home. The last prisoner left the camp on September 27, 1865. The camp was then closed, demolished and converted to farm land.
