General Notes: Husband - Hansford Franklin Carter

Hansford Franklin "Moss" Carter was born in Echols County, Georgia. His parents were Allen W. Carter and Sarah Elizabeth Corbett Carter.

Moss married Zoia Amelia Porter and they had children, Elon, Lawson, Carroll, Cuba and Grace.

Grandpa was a farmer and a carpenter. He built many caskets for neighbors and wife Zoia padded and lined them.
Their daughter Elon married and lived in Lake Park, Lowndes County, Georgia. Her husband had died from an auto accident and she had two small children. Moss and Zoia moved in with her so she could work. Moss had a stroke and was in a wheelchair for the last ten years of lis life. Zoia took care of him.

Grandpa died in March 1945 and my Mother Cuba always said that she wished he could have known the war was over. Cuba was evidently a tomboy. Girls did not wear overalls in those days but Moss bought her overalls. She hunted and fished with him.
Hansford and Zoia were buried at the Carter Cemetery in Echols County, Georgia.

General Notes: Wife - Zoia Amelia Porter

Zoia Amelia Porter was the daughter of Milledge Golfin Porter and Mary Ann Cornwall Porter. She married Hansford Franklin "Moss" Carter and they had five children,Elon, Lawson, Carroll, Cuba and Grace.

My Grandpa was a farmer and a carpenter. He built the county line school house that my Mother attended school in. He also built caskets for a large portion of the neighbors in his community. Grandma would pad them and line them with soft white or blue fabric.
Grandma was the most gentle spoken person that I have ever known. I never heard her say anything bad about anyone or say ugly words. My Grandfather I never knew. He died shortly after I was born. He had a stroke and was confined to a wheelchair the last ten years of his life and Grandma cared for him. I loved to hear her tell the story of him losing his pipe. She had searched everywhere for it and looked at him and said, "Well, Moss what is that in your mouth?"

In the picture of Grandma and my Uncle Carroll, baby Carroll is holding his Father's pocket knife. This was to bribe him to be good for picture taking. I have that pocket knife in my possession today.

Grandma would come to visit when I was very small. Of course, her eyes were not as good as when young. She loved to pick up pecans. She and I would go out to the pecan orchard and I would point my foot at the nuts and she would pick them up.
She lived to be very old and never had surgery of any kind. She fell at age 93 and broke her hip. She had surgery and quietly quit breathing the next day.

I miss her still. She is my definition of a lady.

He was also a large stockowner, owning 1900 head of cattle at his death.

Issac Carter died in 1854, and his son, Stephen, became the administrator of his estate. The estate included lots of land 150 in the 5th of Appling (at that time) and 171 in the 5th of Ware (at that time). The estate was administered in Appling Court of Ordinary.
Mr. Carter was buried on his home-place, and the family burying ground in due time became a community-used cemetery and Tenmile Baptist Church was built about 500 feet away.

Isaac was the son of Revolutionary War veteran George Carter.

In 1809 Isaac's family moved from the Colleton District on the Salkehatchie River in SC to Tattnall County, GA.

On 24 September 1814 Isaac enlisted as Private for a six months term in the 3rd Artillery Regiment, SC Militia commanded by Captain Tristram Bethea. According to War of 1812 company rolls Isaac was given a disability discharge 25 November 1814 at Haddrell's Point, SC.

After the war Isaac returned to Tattnall County, GA where he later married Nellie Teston 26 April 1820. Appling County had recently opened to settlers so the couple moved across the Altamaha River and settled in the 5th land district near Ten-Mile Creek in what is present day Bacon County. There they had a 300+ acre cattle ranch and raised 12 children. Isaac is found in Appling Co. GA census records in 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850.

Isaac died in 1854. His son Stephen became Administrator of his estate. The estate included 1900 head of cattle, 150 acres of land in Appling County and 171 acres in Ware County, all now in Bacon County near present day Alma, GA. The estate was administered in Appling Court of Ordinary. Isaac was buried on his home place. The family burying ground in time became the community used cemetery. Ten Mile Baptist Church was built nearby. Isaac and Nellie's cabin has since been moved but still exists a few miles away. The surrounding area is still known to many as "Cartertown".
