WETHERINGTON, JOHN
1833-1896 ECHOLS
John Wetherington was born in Lowndes County, Sept. 10, 1833, son of Peter Wetherington (Vol.I). In 1855 he was married to Jane Wilkinson, born March 26, 1834, in Lowndes County, daughter of John and Sarah Wilkinson, natives of South Carolina, who lived in that part of Lowndes now Lanier County. They had nine children:

Mr. and Mrs. Wetherington were members of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church in eastern)Echols county. They united with the church and were baptized Oct. 8, 1868. He was Church Clerk, 1871-2, and was ordained a deacon Oct. 5, 1872. He was excluded March 1, 1879, but was restored Aug. 19, 1883, and also restored to his deaconship. He and his wife were dismissed by letter Sept. 15, 1889, and on Nov. 2, 1889 they were received by letter into Hebron Church which is near the Echols county line but just over in Hamilton Co. Fla. He was also received as an ordained deacon. They continued members at Hebron until their deaths. Mr. Wetherington died Jan. 1, 1896, and his wife died in 1928. They were buried at Hebron Church.
Mr. Wetherington served as a Justice of Echols Inferior Court, 1865-1868, and was Tax-collector of his county 1873-1875

Eli was the son of Maxfield Whidden and Sophia P. Crews.
"South Florida Pioneers" Issue 49/50, p.10. Eley served in Capt.Francis M. DURRANCE's Co. of Mtd.Vol. during the Seminole Indian Wars. He was mustered in Aug.22,1856 at Ft.Frazier, FL and described as 6' tall, blue eyes, brown hair and light complexion. He was mustered out Dec.22,1856 at Ft.Frazier. He was mustered in the same Co. Dec.22,1856 at Ft.Brooke. The company was stationed at Ft.Drum on Apr.1857. Eley was mustered out as a bugler June 22,1857 at Ft.Brooke. The WHIDDEN clan settled in the Ft.Hartsuff area in Manatee (present day Hardee Co.) in the mid 1850's. On Oct.12,1885 Eley, age 74 years, resident of Crewsville, applied for a pension based on his Indian War service. He received $8.00 per month.
