General Notes: Husband - Samuel Crews

Samuel Crews is born in Clinch County, Georgia, likely in the 12th District, on November of 1870. He is the son of Samuel Crews and Morgiana "Annie" Waldron. .

Samuel was not enumerated during the 1870 census, but father Samuel, mother Annie, his only living sibling, Sarah, and aunt, Julia Crews were included in the Crews household. Morgiana (Annie) was approximately 5 months pregnant with Samuel.

His father, also Samuel, passed away when the younger Samuel was about five years of age in 1875. Morgiana later remarried to Mr. William Combs as the 1880 census lists Samuel as living in the William Combs household in Clinch County, with his mother. Samuel is 9 years old and sister, Sarah, is age 12.

Sometime after the 1880 census was taken but before 1893, the family relocated to eastern Lowndes County. During 1893, William Combs name begins showing on the Antioch Church Meeting Minutes and he continued to be active in 1894 and 1895 in the Echols County church.

Samuel Crews is next enumerated in the 1900 US Census for Lowndes County, living in the William Combs household in Lake Park GA. The census states Samuel was born in November of 1870 in Georgia, he was 29 years old and single and is employed as farm labor.

The single status changed on December 22nd 1901. Receiving their marriage license a few days earlier, on the 18th, Samuel married Sallie Carter, in Echols County, GA. Sarah E. "Sallie" Carter is a daughter of Allen Carter and Sarah E. Corbett. The couple had two children, they are:

1. Leo b. 2 Oct. 1902, Lake Park, GA m. Teeny Elizabeth Melton, dau. of David Franklin Melton and Mary Lou Ella Hines, 11 May 1932, d. 21 May, 1962 in Lake City, Florida.
2. Laurab. 28 May, 1908, Lake Park, GA, m. Earl Heilman, d. 7 Feb. 1974

However, Sallie passed away eight years later on May 12, 1909, leaving Samuel to raise the two young children, ages six and one.

Samuel now age 39 is listed as the head of household in the 1910 Census. He is in Lake Park (Lowndes) GA with son Leo age 7 and daughter Laura, 1 month short of her 2nd birthday. This census indicates his occupation is a "Retail Merchant," of "General Mechandise"; he owns his home, and he is literate. Samuel's son Leo informed his sons that his father owned and operated a general store located "at the fork in the road in Lake Park."

During the period of time that the 1910 census was taken, daughter Laura was taken in and raised by Sallie's brother, Wylie Carter and wife Beulah. Laura appears in both households during the 1910 census of Echols and Lowndes Counties.

Samuel remarried 17 Jul 1910 to Wealthy Louisa Herring in Lowndes County, Georgia. Louisa was from White Springs, Florida. Sam and Louisa had a child; Mallie Katrina. Mallie was born in Lake Park, Ga on October 10th, 1913, a month before Samuel passed away .

Samuel died a little more than four years after Sallie had passed away leaving the children from their marriage with no parents. The date of his death is listed as November 16, 1913.

Daughter Laura was already in good hands with the Wylie Carter family. Son Leo was taken in by Martin T. Carter Jr. and raised to maturity on "Uncle Buck's" farm in Echols.

Samuel Crews is interred in the Carter Family Cemetery next to the Sardis Baptist Church in western Echols County next to his first wife and his mother.

The children of Old Sam Crews is speculation at this point in my research 7/28/22. They are based on proximity of other Crews heads-of-households in 1810 St Bartholomews, Colleton County, SC Census. Edward, Roger, and Joseph appear to live on the same or adjoining property as Sam. The details can be found on page 609 of the 1810 Census. Alexander is also on the same page appearing to live close to the others.

General Notes: Husband - Samuel Crews

Samuel was born about 1835 in what was then Ware County, Georgia. His birth dates vary from Census to Census. He was the eldest child of Joseph Crews and Sarah Johns. Sam was enumerated in the 1850 census for Ware County in the household of his father at age 15.

His father, Joseph, passed away abt. 1856. Shortly after or during March of 1860, his mother passed away and the children were taken in by neighbors and raised to maturity. Samuel as well as brothers Alexander and Joseph are listed as living with James North during the 1860 census.

Samuel married Morgiana "Annie" Waldron, a daughter of Elias D., about 1867. To Samuel and Morgiana were born three children though only two of the three are known. The known children are:

1.Sarah - b. January 25, 1868, d. 1939, m. Bryant Cowart 6/1884
2. Samuel - b. November 1870, d. November 26, 1913, m. Sallie Carter 12/22/1901.
3. (Name Unknown)

In 1868, the Clinch County Tax Digest for GMD 1141 indicates Samuel owns no real estate and has "other property" valued at $420. In 1869, the Clinch County Tax Digest for Georgia Military District 1141 indicates Samuel owns no real estate and has "other property" valued at $143. In 1870, the Clinch County Tax Digest for Georgia Military District 1141 indicates Samuel owns no real estate and has "other property" valued at $161.

The 1870 Census for Clinch County shows Sam as the head of the household, age 30, married to "Annie" age 25, has a daughter Sarah age 2. Sam's baby sister Julia, age 15, is also enumerated in the home. Samuel's occupation is listed as "farmer" during the 1870 census.

From 1871 through 1875, the Clinch County Tax Digest for Georgia Military District 1141 has no reference to Samuel.

During 1876, Elias D. Waldron acts as an "agent for Mrs. A. Crews and children" (other property at $153). This leads one to believe that Samuel had passed away sometime during 1875 as stated by turn of the century genealogist/Clinch County Judge, Folks Huxford.

Samuel is likely buried in an unmarked grave at Bethel Church cemetery in Echols, near his other Crews kin. It appears Samuel and Annie lived briefly in Echols, hence the missing tax records. Ramah Primitive Baptist Church minutes state that on June 20, 1876 Annie joins Ramah. "... Morgiana Crews is received by letter from Bethel church Echols County Georgia..." She and the children likely moved back to her parent's home after Samuel's passing.

Annie, now residing in Clinch, filed taxes in 1877, 1878, and again in 1879 in that county. In 1877, the Clinch County Tax Digest reports Mrs. Annie Crews declared her other property was valued at $125. In 1878, the Clinch County Tax Digest shows Annie's brother, Asbury Waldron, as an agent for Mrs. Annie Crews.

The Ramah meeting minutes dated Oct 12th 1878 state "the church test Anna Crews and with Drawed her fellowship unanimously". Per Dr John Crowley , the church "test", although an unusual use of the word, meant that they either questioned her, or themselves as to their feelings for her . They must not have liked her responses as the church excommunicated her.

In the 1879 Clinch County Tax Digest, William Combs acts as the "agent for wife and children." So, Annie remarried during 1879. The 1900 census indicates William and Annie were married for 20 years.

On Jan 17th 1880, Annie and husband William Combs both applied for membership at Ramah. William was "Received by Confession of Faith" and Annie was restored to the churches fellowship.

Feb 23rd 1884, William was granted his letter of Dismission from Ramah. It was after this date that William, Annie, Sarah and Samuel relocated to Echols/Lowndes County border area from Clinch.

The 1900 census for Lowndes County, Lake Park District, lists William Combs as head of the household, Annie Combs as his wife, Samuel Crews as his stepson and Sarah as his stepdaughter. George Combs was also enumerated in the household. The same census states Annie had 3 children, with 2 of the 3 living as of 1900.

Annie is interred in the Carter Family Cemetery next to Sardis Baptist Church in western Echols County, GA. Though she is not identified by name, the inscription on her headstones states, "Mother of Sam and Sarah Crews."

General Notes: Wife - Morgiana Waldron

Morgiana (Annie or Anna) Waldron, daughter of Elias D. Waldron and Nancy Thomas, was born 1845 in Ware County, GA and died September 22, 1909 in Echols County GA. She married first Samuel Crews, son of Joseph Crews and Sarah Johns.

Annie had three children, though only two are known at this writing.

Samuel, Annie, daughter Sarah, and Samuel's baby sister, Julia Crews, were enumerated in the 1870 census in Clinch County, GA. At the time, Annie was approximately 5 months pregnant with son, Samuel.

First husband Samuel Crews died about 1875. Per the Clinch County Tax Digest of 1876, Elias D. Waldron (Annie's father) acted as an "agent for Mrs. A. Crews and children". In 1877, the Clinch County Tax Digest reports Mrs. Annie Crews declared her other property was valued at $125. In 1878, the Clinch County Tax Digest shows Annie's brother, Asbury Waldron, as an agent for Mrs. Annie Crews (as well as Mrs. Nancy Waldron). In the 1879 Clinch County Tax Digest, William Combs is the "agent for wife and children."

June 20, 1876 after Divine Service By the pastor H Cowart 20 Minutes Intermission the church came in Conference The Door of the church was opened for the Reception of members Sister Nancy Griffis Came forward and By letter from Bethel church Echolls County Ga was Received also, at the same time Morgann Crews came forward and was received by letter from the Same church.

On Oct 12th 1878 after Divine Service by the pastor H Cowart the church "tests" Anna Crews and withdrew her fellowship unanimously. I have no idea what or why this test was administered but obviously the result was she was no longer a member of Ramah.

The church of Ramah met Saturday morning Jan 17th 80 After Divine Services By the pastor H Cowart 20 Minutes Intermission the church came in Conferance a door was opened for the Reception of Members William Combs came forward and was Recd by Confession of faith also sister Annie Combs was Rectored

Morgiana later married William Combs The 1900 census indicates William and Annie were married for 20 years, therefore married about 1880. The couple was in Clinch Co at the time of their wedding in 1880.

Sometime after 1880 but before 1893, William, Annie, and family relocated to eastern Lowndes County.

Anna is interred in the Carter Family Cemetery next to Sardis Baptist Church in western Echols County, GA. Though she is not identified by name, the inscription on her headstones states, "Mother of Sam and Sarah Crews."

Samuel Crews

Samuel Crews was born in the Beaufort District of South Carolina about 1790 per Gene Barber of the BAKER COUNTY PRESS. He married Elizabeth Griffis/Griffin, born about 1790 in SC. The couple had the following children:

1 Rebecca. b. 1822
2. Elizabeth b. 1828 in SC.
3. Samuel b. 1830 in SC, m. Harriet Raulerson dau. of Nimrod b. 1831 in GA.
4. Elias b. 1834 in SC, m. Rebecca _____ b. 1842 in FL.
5. Esther b. 1836 in SC.
6. Susannah b. 1838 in Georgia.

Samuel and Elizabeth left South Carolina around 1837 and moved first to Camden County, Georgia and soon after to Ware County, GA (the part that is now Echols County).

After living there, near the Florida line, through the Indian War, they removed to Ft. Moniac on the Florida side of the St. Marys in what was then Columbia County, Florida.

Samuel and Elizabeth evidently had marital difficulties since they were often living separately, she usually moving back to Georgia

The family's Florida residence was cut into Baker County, Florida in 1861. There is also a reference of the family near the area where Charlton County, GA and Nassau County, FL. meet.

Both Samuel and Elizabeth passed away in Baker County Florida. Samuel passed away about 1865. After her husband's death, Elizabeth moved in with son, Samuel Lemrod Crews and his family, where she is found in the 1870 census. Elizabeth died in 1880.

Both Samuel and Elizabeth are interred in what is now known as the Crews Cemetery near Baxter in Baker County, FL. This cemetery now is on private property. The owners often grant access to the cemetery when asked. Son Samuel, (original marker) as well as Sanee Rhoden (alleged sister of Osceola) some Raulersons and a rumored Yankee militia are also interred there.

Then again I found this article online in 2001

THE BAKER COUNTY PRESS, Thursday May 11, 1978, Page Two THE WAY IT WAS -
Gene Barber Some Notes On The Johns Family

" A widespread and prolific family in south Georgia and northeast Florida, most of the Johns family seem to be descendents of a Jeremiah 'Jerry' Johns who was born before the Revolutionary War in North Carolina. Jeremiah and his wife Levicy (an old form of 'Louisa') lived in South Carolina and Georgia into the first quarter of the 19th century. The names of his children will be readily recognizable as popular names for many of the present Johns generation... Sarah, born about 1809 in South Carolina married Joseph, son of Samuel Crews, and was responsible for many of that clan throughout southeast Georgia and northeast Florida.

THE BAKER COUNTY PRESS, Thursday, February 26, 1976. Page Two The Way It
Was-Gene Barber Some Notes On The Crews Family - Part II
"Samuel Crews also moved to Camden County during the Second Seminole War. He was born about 1790 in Beaufort District, South Carolina. His wife was Elizabeth. They left Beaufort District about 1837, and moved to Ware County (that part now Echols). After living there, near the Florida line, through the Indian War, they removed to Ft. Moniac on the Florida side of the St. Marys. Samuel and Elizabeth evidently had marital difficulties since they were often living separately, she usually moving back to Georgia to Camden County. He was supposedly buried near Ft. Moniac around 1865 and she survived him several years. Their known heir to remain in the Baker-Charlton area was Samuel Lemrod. He was born in 1830 in South Carolina and married Harriet Raulerson, a daughter of Nimrod. Their many descendants live in Baker and Charlton Counties."

Crews Cemtery: This small plot is localed on a knoll at the forks of Moccasin Branch and the North Prong. Tradition among some of the older residents claims this spot to be the site of old Ft. Moniac, the original home of Arch Hogans (among the very first American citizens), and the burying place of Sam Crews (one of the first of that name to move into the county area). The fenced-in plot is protected and respected by the present owners, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Burnsed.

Samuel Crews, father of Samuel who married Harriet Raulerson, moved to Ga/Fl many years after Roger, Stephen, William and Alexander Crews. Samuel had a land plat in Colleton Dist., SC, dated 9 Mar 1801 (Saltcatcher's River/Swamp). Names on this doc. include Micajah and Alexander of 1771. Alex., Joseph, and Micajah also had plats for this area. Lee Ander Crews was son of Robert Edwin and Marietta Thrift-Crews, grandson of Samuel and Harriett Raulerson-Crews, great grand of Samuel and Elizabeth (maiden name not proven). The last Elizabeth was living with her son, Samuel, in Baker Co., Fl, in 1870.

Samuel, who m. Harriet Raulerson, served in the Indian Wars and the Civil War. The Widow's pension is on-line at Florida State Archives Web Site. Benjamin Crews, son of elder Samuel, married his cousin Mary Crews and after her death he moved to Manatee Co., Fl. to live with his son, John Quincy Crews. Mary was the daughter of Steven and Nancy Bradley-Crews. Steven was not the son of Alexander but was a brother to Old Samuel. The pension records of War of 1812 show that William who m. Sarah Bradley, was a bro. to Stephen. John/Catherine Prevatt-Crews and Roger/Elizabeth Mitchell-Crews were also brothers.

Asberry Crews, son of Rebecca and grandson of old Samuel, served in Civil War, married twice and spent the remainder of his life in Polk Co., Fl. Asberry was confined to bed for a long time; his pension records show he was an educated man. Asberry's first wife was Susan Burney, second was Matilda Smith. Hope this little bit helps.

Geraldine Crews, dau. of Lee Ander, married my uncle Everett Crews. Steven Crews was on the 1810 census of Camden Co., Ga. He returned to SC to marry. The Bradley girls were sisters. We have two direct lines to Alexander Crews and two lines to Roger Crews.

Note: In this census (1830) there are two Samuels in St Barts, listed as Sr and Jr. Both are listed as between 30-40 years of age. Both are married to women between 30-39. However Samuel Sr.'s listed 3 females below 19 and Jr has 5 males below 14 and 2 females below 14. Samuel Jr has the chilldren in the age range of the Samuel that later relocated to Georgia and Florida. Also, the Jr tag could indicate he is a son of Old Samuel b. 1750, while the Samuel Sr could be a son of Joseph or John (likely brothers to Old Samuel)
