CARTER, ISAAC.
1774-1854
APPLING

Isaac Carter, youngest son of Jacob Carter, and brother of George Carter (Vol.III), was born in South Carolina in 1774 according to the 1850 Census, Appling County. His wife, Lydia (maiden name unknown), was born 1770 in South Carolina. They had the following known children:

1. Elizabethb. 1797, m. John Robinson (Vol-lll).
2. Elijahb. 1799, m. Ellender
3. Rebeccab. 1808, m. James Herndon.
4. John B.b. 1810, m. Rebecca Crummey, dau. of Stephen.
5. Maryb. 1811, never married.
6. Charityb. 1813, m. William Herndon.
7. Jesseb. 1815, m. Mary A. Spence, dau. of Joshua.
8. James H.b. 1818, m. Jane Spence, dau. of Joshua.
9. Harrietb. 1820, never married.

Mr. Carter was among the first settlers of Appling County, and is found there in the 1820 census. He lived there until he died about 1854. He settled on what was known in 1889 as the old Reddish place on 10-mile Creek, according to the remininscences of the late H.D. O'Quin (1815-1900). Mr. O'Quin wrote that Isaac Carter "was a great hunter".
Mrs. Carter died in May, 1850, age 80 years, according to the mortuary schedule, 1850 Appling County census.

Eaton Douglas was born in Burke in 1800, son of John Douglas. He came as a young man to Tattnall County, thence to Appling County where he married Maria Branch, born 1805 in this state, daughter of William Branch, R, S. Born to them were:

1. Barzillab. 1824, m. Dicy Bennett, dau. of John (Vol. I). Moved to Florida.
2. Henryb. 1826, m. Cinderella Lee, dau. of James (Vol. 11)
3. Johnb. 1828, m. Ist. Raebel -; 2nd. Hannah Tomlinson, May 15, 1873. Later moved to Fla.
4. Elizabethb. 1827, m. Ambrose G. Harnage.
5. Hannahb. 1830, m. James Monroe Lee.
6. Warrenb. 1831, m. Martha Nettles, dau. of Martin.
7. Thaddeusb. 1833, m. Margaret Courson, dau. of Thomas.

Mr. Douglas moved from Appling to Lowndes County about 1837 and located in the present Stockton district of Lanier County. His home was on the lot of land whereon James L. Lovejoy later lived north of Stockton, The family was cut out of Lowndes into Clinch in 1850. Mr. Douglas was living there when he died about 1868. His death occurred on Suwannoochee Creek in Clinch County, apparently while looking after his livestock. His widow soon afterwards went to Appling County to live with some of her children there, and died about 1875.

Mr. and Mrs. Douglas were members of Union Primitive Baptist Church, he being baptized into its membership Sept. 9, 1848. He was expelled at his own request Sept. 11, 1863. His wife was received into the church on a "confession of faith", Oct. 7, 1848, she having formerly been a member of a Missionary Baptist Church. She was dismissed by letter Nov. 12, 1864.

Eaton Douglas served as 2nd Lieutenant under Capt. John J. Johnson in the Indian War, Sept. 22nd to Oct. 18, 1840. He also served other enlistments in that war.
