General Notes: Husband - David Franklin Melton



David Franklin Melton was born in the Benton area of Columbia County, FL on 12 Dec. 1878.  He was the son of  Hilliary Melton and Sara Mathis.   Frank, as he was commonly known, was raised on the Melton family farm in the Benton Community where he resided all his life.  Frank attended grades one through six in that community.

Frank worked the family farm with his father.  Frank married Mary Louella Hines, daughter of William Hines and Francis Rimes, during 1899.  Frank and "Ella", as she was commonly known, had five children, all born in Benton.

Frank was not listed in the 1900 Soundex for the state of Florida, though he still lived in the same area.

In January, 1906, Federal Records indicate Frank was granted 121 acres of land from the "public domain" in a  document which bears the signature of President Theodore Roosevelt (see appendix A for copy of deed).

David Franklin Melton was listed in the 1910 as Frank Milton age 28.  The family in the 1910 census is:  wife Ella age 27 b. in FL, daughter Sarah F. age 9 b. in FL, son Thomas age 7 b. in FL, son Henry age 6 b. in FL, daughter Gertrude age 4 b. in FL, and daughter Teeny age 2, b. in FL.

The Columbia County Census of 1920 lists Frank Melton age 41.  The household in the 1920 census is:  wife Ella age 40 b. in FL, daughter Francis age 19 b. in FL, son Thomas age 17 b. in FL, son Henry age 16 b. in FL, daughter Gertrude age 14 b. in FL, and daughter Teeny (granny Crews) age 12, b. in FL father Hillery age 63 b. in Florida and mother Sarah age 66  b. in Georgia.

The Columbia County Census of 1930 for the Benton and Blounts Ferry area lists Frank at age 50.  The household within the 1930 census:  wife Ella age 50 b. in FL, daughter Francis age 29 b. in FL, daughter Gertrude age 23, born in FL, and daughter Teeny age 21, and mother Sarah age 79 b. in GA.  Son Tommy (William Hillery) lived next door.  Son Henry lived in Lake City at the time, with his family.

The 1935 Florida State Census states Frank had a sixth grade education and wife Ella had a seventh grade education.  The same census indicates Frank owned his farm (as opposed to many in the family who rented farms).  At this time Gertrude was still living with her parents at age 28.  Son Tommie and his family was also living in Frank's household (including Tommie Jr. 9, Lee 7, Betty Sue 6, Fred G 4. and Willie J.

David Franklin Melton died in testate, 15 Apr 1939.  Son Henry was appointed the executor of his estate on 2 Nov. 1944.  Wife Ella survived her husband by eleven years and passed away 24 Jan. 1950.  Ella's obituary reported she had been in poor health for two years and stated the cause of her death as a heart attack.  She too, lived in Benton all her life with the exception of the final four years in which she lived in Lake City.  Both Frank and Ella are buried in Prospect Church Cemetery in Hamilton County, FL.

William Hines
1848 - 1920

William Hines was born during the time that the United States was at war with Mexico.  He was born in 1848 in the Benton area of Columbia County, Florida.  He is the eldest son of Isaac J. and Malinda Raulings Hines.  All census records list William's occupation as a farmer or farm laborer.  William marries Francis (sometimes spelled Frances) Rimes in 1868.  Frances was born January 17, 1852 in Georgia and passed away January 13, 1914.  Frances is the daughter of David Allen and Elizabeth Albritton Rimes.  The prolific couple had twelve children.  Their children are:

William is first found in the 1850 census for the Benton area as a two year old.  He was enumerated in the household of his parents along with older sister Jane.

The census for the year 1870 indicates 22-year-old William is now married to eighteen-year-old Frances and they have a three-month-old son also named William. They reside next door to his father Isaac.

The 1880 census for the area shows a twelve-year-old Lacy Hines b. 1868 enumerated in the household and listed as a son however, he was not enumerated in the household during 1870.  Only son William who was 3 months old was enumerated.  This leads one to believe that Lacy and William are one in the same.

Still residing in Benton during the 1900 US Census, William and Frances have two grandsons Matthew and Forest in the household along with a niece, Kansas Register.  Brother Joseph lives next door with his family.  Francis is the mother of 12 children, all 12 living in 1900.  They rented their home in Benton.

The 1910 Census shows the family now living in Suwannee Shoals in Columbia County.  Now age 67, only grandsons Matthew and Forest are living in the household.  Frances had 13 children, 11 living at the time.  Their son David and his family now live next door.

By the time the 1920 Census is taken, Frances has passed away 13 Nov, 1914, grandsons Forest and Matthew have moved on and now another grandson Lum (should be Vining) Bening, age 17, resides with the 77 year old William.

William passes away later on July 23, 1920 and was buried the following day, in Oak Grove Cemetery, next to Frances.

Note: William's age is stated as 67 and 77 during the 1910 and 1920 census respectively, making his birth date in 1843.  Earlier census of 1850 and 1870 indicate the birth year was 1847/48.  I tend to go with the 1848 date as indicated on his monument.
