General Notes: Husband - William B. Griffin

GRIFFIN, WILLIAM B.1837-1900 CLINCH

William B. Griffin was born, July 15, 1837, in Bulloch County, a son of William and Cynthia Strickland Griffin (Vol.111), and lived in Ware and Pierce Counties the first thirty-two or thirty-three years of his life. He then moved to Clinch County. He was married twice. The first marriage was on February 18, 1858 to Civility Crews, born 1837, daughter of Micajah Crews (Vol.1). By her, four children were born:

1. John b. 1859, m. Elizabeth Lane, dau. of Thomas, 8/17/1882.
2. Cynthia b. 1860, m. Granville Morgan, 11/24/1879 in Hamilton Co., Fla.
3. Emanzia b. 1864, m. James Lane, son of Thomas, 4/6/1882.
4. William W. b. 1867, m. Laura Griffis, dau. of Sarah and g-dau. of Samuel Griffis, 3/18/1883.

His first wife died about 1868 at their home in what was then Pierce, but now Brantley County. About 1872, Mr. Griffin moved to Clinch County, where he lived until his death, February 25, 1900. His second marriage was in Echols County, in 1872, to Caroline Ellis, born in 1849 in Hamilton County, Florida, a daughter of Joseph A. Ellis, a school teacher, who had moved not long before from Hamilton County, Florida to Echols County. By the second wife, he had six children:

5. Frances B. b. 1873,m. W.N. Gibson of Fargo, 7/21/1891.
9. Joseph b. 1886,m. Arby Morgan, dau. of Thomas, 2/5/1905.
10. Harry J. b. 1887,m. Lou Elva Smith, dau. of James, 1/9/1910.

His widow, Mrs. Caroline Ellis Griffin, married Solomon Smith, a widower, December 5, 1901, but the marriage ended in separation and divorce. No record has been found of Mr. Griffin's service in the Confederate Army. The published rosters of Confederate Regiments from Georgia only covers the Infantry Regiments, so, it is possible he served in a Cavalry Company. The first cavalry unit from this section was the 4th Georgia Cavalry Regiment which was organized in 1862, and rosters of the different companies were poorly kept, and some rosters were lost.
