HERNDON, David

ECHOLS
DAVID HERNDON was born on or near the line of Barnwell and Colleton counties, South Carolina, in 1813, a son of Phillip Herndon. His mother was a sister of Capt. Jesse Carter (q.v.) and others of that family which moved to Appling County about 1819-1820, some of them later moving to Lowndes County. Phillip Herndon and family moved to Appling county along with the Carters. His grandfather, William Herndon, was born in 1743 in Caroline County, Virginia, and moved to North Carolina where he was in the Revolutionary War, then moved to Barnwell District, South Carolina.
David Herndon grew up in Appling County, Georgia, his parents living near the old county seat village of Holmesville. When he was of age he left home and went to Montgomery County and there met Miss Eliza Coarsey, and they were married July 7, 1832 in that county. She was born in this state in 1812. To David and Eliza were born:
1. Johnb. 1835, m. Marzilla Carter, daughter of Geoorge C.
2. George W.b. 1837, m. Mehala Lofton of Lowndes Co.
3. James M.b. 1838, killed about 1865, died single.
4. Joshuab. 1842, died young.
5. Rachelb. 1845, died single, age about 20 years.
6. Davidb. 1848, m. Mary Frances Levar of Twiggs Co.
7. Rebecca Annb. 1850, died young.
8. Williamb. 1852, m. Betsy Ann DeLoach. daughter of Rowan.
9. Howellb. 1854, m. Anna Clayton, daughter of Miller H.
About 1840, Mr. Herndon and family moved to Irwin County and settled in that portion cut off in 1854 into Worth County. Record is found of his service as a Grand Juror in Irwin County, September Term, 1848, and at other times. After several years spent there in farming and stock-raising he sold out and moved about 1855 to Lowndes, now Echols County. In 1858 the family was cut off out of Lowndes into Echols. Mr. Herndon was a resident there until his death about 1888. His wife died about 1890. They are buried in Echols County.
Hon. Thomas D. Herndon, present Clerk of Echols Superior Court, is a grandson.
