THRIFT, LEROY J.1841-1889 CHARLTON

Leroy J. Thrift (generally known as "Pomp" Thrift), ancestor of most of the Thrifts of Baker County, Fla., was born in Ware County, Feb. 11, 1841, son of Carr W. Thrift (Vol.V). He was maTried in 1863 in Charlton County, to Zilpha Hogan, daughter of Archibald Hogan (Vol.IV). When she was born her parents were living on the St. Marys River but whether in Georgia or in Florida cannot be definitely stated, though the 1850 Census shows her born in Georgia (the 1840 Census showing the Hogan family in Columbia, now Baker, County, Fla., and the newspaper article telling of the Indian attack on the Hogan home in August, 1840, referring to it having occurred in Florida near the St. Marys River). She was born Nov. 9, 1847 according to her tombstone, but the 1850 Census shows her four years old. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Thrift were eleven children:

1. Mariettab. 1864, m. Robert L. Crews (son of Samuel).
2. James W.b. 1866, m. 1st. Nancy Crews; 2nd. Lossie Wilkerson.
3. Robert Archibaldb. 1868, m. Mary Raulerson, dau. of John'
4. Rufusb. 1869, m. Susan Yarbrough, dau. of Benj.
5. Joseph 0.b. 1871, m. Caroline Raulerson, dau. of Mack and Emily.
6. Daniel Learyb. 1872, m. Hanson, dau. of Mitchell Thomas.
7. Zilphiab. 1874, m. Jasper N. Burnsed, son of Edmond.
8. Mosesb. 1880, m. 1st. Laura Hunter, dau. of John and Florence Sapp Hunter; 2nd. Mrs. Winnie Caldwell, dau. of Allen Thomas.
9. Charlesb. 1881, died single, age 18 years.
10. Sarahb. 1886, m. George Garrett.
11. Nellieb. 1889, m. Lewis Weldon Mobley.

Mr. Thrift and family lived in the Moniac community of Charlton County, near the St. Marys River, the state fine. The 1860 Census of Charlton shows him single living in the home of P.W.W. Mattox (Vol.V), occupation shown as "farm-laborer". He and his wife were members of Moniac Methodist Church. He was a private in Co. "D'', 4th Georgia Cavalry Regiment, C.S.A., 18634865 (a Charlton County company).
Leroy J. Thrift died at the age of 48 years, Feb. 6, 1889, and was buried in old Hopewell Cemetery at Moniac. His widow later moved over the river into Baker County, Fla., most of the children having married there and living there. She died in Baker County, Feb. 21, 1918, and was buried by her husband in Hopewell Cemetery.
In recent years a family re-union of the descendants of this old couple is held annually in May at Macedonia Methodist Church in Baker County, and Sheriff Paul Thrift of that county is the current President (1970).
