Mr. Howell was for many years an active and faithful member of the Methodist Church with which he united in South Carolina. When he was about the age of forty, he was granted a local preacher's license and often exhorted in services. Due largely to his efforts, a Methodist Church was organized, the first of that faith in present Echols County, and the church house of which was located about two miles west of his home. The name of this church was Howell Methodist Church. The church was dissolved in the 1890s, and the church building was torn down about 1900.
Mr. Howell's only public service was that of Justice of Peace in the 904th district, Lowndes County, 1842-1849. He was cut out of Lowndes and placed in the new County of Echols in 1858. His death occurred in December 1860. He was buried in the family cemetery about 300 yards west of his home where his second wife had been buried, she being the first one to be buried there. This cemetery is now an abandoned burying ground and has no marked graves. The third wife survived and died about 1867.
The son, John G. Howell, took charge of his minor brothers, Charles F., Isham D., and Aaron W. Howell, and when he, John G., moved to Pasco County, Florida, in 1866, he took them with him and reared them to manhood there. Isham and Aaron married and lived in Florida, but Charles returnd to this section, married lived and died here. The other minor son, called Staten, was in the care of his mother until her death in 1867, after which his half-brother, James W. Howell, took him in charge and reared him to manhood.
